Our CSR teams realise well that while purchasing of new cattle- heads would be beneficial, so would be the improvement of health of the existing cattle that are already owned by the community. Therefore, a large and intensive cattle-health program is implemented at the locations. In one such program at Ariyalur, 162 cattle-heads were treated for various dis- eases by a team of 3 Veteri- narians from the Government’s Department. Encouraged by the results, the locations plan to do more such camps in the near future. Whilst we may not be able to recreate the Amul Story through a humble initiative, the happiness, that our pro- gram brings, is rewarding and fulfilling. And the team is reso- lute to continue to brighten many more such faces! It was a sad moment for our nation when the father of White-Revolution, Dr Verghese Kurien, passed away last month. It was his initiative and a hu- mongous effort during the middle of the last century that India rose to become the world leader in milk production with over 120 million tonnes of milk that is produced every year in our country. Dairy, either principaly or as a subsidi- ary to agriculture, has become a pre- ferred livelihood for people living in rural India. No wonder, therefore, that animal husbandry figures as a promi- nent program in the community devel- opment initiatives of Dalmia Bharat Enterprises’ Corporate Social Responsi- bility (CSR). A two pronged approach has been adopted to strengthen dairying as an occupation in our program areas; one is to help the poor purchase cattle through micro-finance and the second is to assist them to improve milk-yield by way of improved cattle health. The last months saw the CSR team at Ariyalur managing to assist 23 underprivileged people secure loan for purchase of milch cattle. Similarly, 32 disadvantaged farmers were credited money for purchase of cattle at Dalmiapuram. The milch animal programs have raised the income of at least 623 people by Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,500 per month, besides increasing an overall availability of milk in the region. The source of their income has been odd farm work at bigger farms, irregular job work and dependency on rural employment guarantee scheme, which wasn’t good enough for fulfilling the ba- sic needs of the family. It was then when Padmavathy came in contact with our CSR team and was chosen as one of the program benefici- aries. In India, over 2.1 million children die even before celebrating their fifth birthday.
While around 4 million children die within the first 28 days of life across the planet annually, India records around one fourth of these cases. Keeping these facts in mind our Corporate Social Responsibility Program focuses on providing health care facilities to the poor and downtrodden through health camps, awareness programs, immuniza-tion camps and so on.

Ottakovil is an economi-
cally backward village with inadequate education and employment opportunities. Some 90% of the village population looks up to agri-culture as a primary but chancy source of income. A major thrust in our CSR program is to explore new
options of livelihood for our target commu-nity, be-sides strength-ening ex-
isting options. The Ariyalur CSR team got their innovation engines running full throttle this summer when they discov-ered the possibility of de-veloping a group of village youth into musicians! The reason: there are lots of festivals and they don’t sound that great without
music, or musicians. Eight village youth, including two somewhat trained players of instruments, were brought together and trained under a music master for 3 months. As a result there was a full-fledged band up and playing. They play on festivals, office events, temple celebrations etc. They soon found that more people were calling them than they could han-dle hence; they formed another one, all by themselves in double quick time. Ariyalur team reports that each individual band member makes Rs.1500 per month to Rs.7500 per month depending on number of occasions. That does sound sweet!

The Company has donated
Rs. 7.2 lakhs to “Friends of Tribal Society” for operat-ing 45 “One Teacher Schools” (Ekal Vidyalay) in peripheral villages of its
600 children and their fami-lies were part of this aware-ness program in Jawahar-pur and Ramgarh. This was complemented by focused parent-teacher meetings to create a 360 degree frame-work for ensuring that chil-dren find school an inter-esting and joyous place to attend every day. At Nigohi, 30 children benefit from a program focused on improving their learning
skills and to fill their gaps in understanding the subjects. Overall, close to 1,050 chil-dren in the three loca-tions directly benefit from our program.
Awareness and enrollment
campaigns have been or-ganized for bringing drop out students back into schools by reaching to com-munity through street thea-tre communication. Inter-esting role play activities are performed to communi-cate the importance of schools and education to children, parents and the community overall. Close to

Students who had scored cen-
tum in school exam held for 10th and 12th classes during March and April 2012 were hon-oured along with their subject teachers on 10th September at Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School at Ariyalur. 15 students from selected schools of Ariyalur town who had scored centum in one or more subjects received silver coins and certificates. Similarly at Dalmiapuram, the Rank Holders in 6th, 7th and 8th classes – “Merit Awards 12” certificates were distributed on 21st September to the school students in the Dalmia CSR tar-
Ashish from Kesvamau village in
Ramgarh is one such child who is beginning to feel that school can be both fun and the right place for a child his age. Youngest of three children of Jagdish who is an im-poverished farmer with small and relatively less productive land-holding, Ashish spent most of his time outside school and was so irregular that he rarely went to school. He was identified by the Dalmia CSR team as one of the needy beneficiaries of our educa-tion program that specifically makes efforts to bring children back into the school system. The persistent and focused follow-up of our teachers with Ashish’s par-ents and the child himself encour-aged Ashish to join the junior school at Bhartal where we have observed that he is in school for at least 10 days. He will also be part of our remedial education pro-gram so that he is able to cope with the subjects. Like many other children in our program, he will be provided full attention to stay at school and we are sure he will one day look back at his days school as the best ever in life.
