Technology (IT) firm, Steria, by being a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

On our first day, we went to Sanskar Kendra School, Noida, where they briefed us about their CSR initiatives and about their focus areas. We were then divided into three groups and sent to different schools where we had to do our project.

I along with my three other team members were given the task to teach primary and secondary school students. The duration of our live project was of seven days. We started with teaching the students from the second day. During the course of our live project, I dealt with almost all the standards and interacted with all of them for at least once during the entire period of our project. I especially taught four sections (4th, 5th, 6thand 7th). I followed a fun- way learning approach where I used to teach the students by engaging them in certain activities related to my teaching and made them to apply, whatever were their learnings.

I mainly taught science to the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th standard students and also conducted sports activities, which were greatly appreciated by the students.

This live project was an opportunity to acquire unique and new experiences and there was no doubt that I had accepted it, placing my outmost effort, to gain each and every knowledge I could get, and the learnings were indeed miraculous.

7.1 SMART CLASSROOMS / DIGITAL LEARNING CENTRES

Steria had launched the 'smart classroom' initiative on a pilot basis in a Chennai school in 2010, where two classes had been converted to be 'smart classrooms' with the use of technology as a teaching aid. With the help of a computer and an interactive board in place of a normal blackboard, the teacher is able to use ready made teaching content for various subjects as per prescribed syllabus or is able to prepare his/her own content, modify, store, recall, revise etc as per the requirements of the class and its students. In Padma Adarsh Higher Secondary School – Vaniyanchavadi Chennai, the number of smart classrooms has been increased to six in the English medium section from this academic year ie. 2011.

Provides quality of teaching and the quality of the teaching staff as they are the most critical factors which will influence school experience of the child.

Appointed computer teachers to computer centres.

Page 15: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

Steria staff also volunteers in these schools.

Ready-made teaching facility helps children to learn in more interactive way.

Digital Learning Centres is set up as a common centre of learning for all classes and will be utilized by teachers for specific subjects.

Digital Learning Centres (DLCs), which is similar to the 'Smart Classroom' concept, have now been set up in 5 additional Steria supported schools mentioned below……..

o Dnyandeep Vidyalaya – Puneo Yash Memorial School – Noidao Govt. Higher Secondary School Mahabalipuram – Chennai,o Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Nandivaram – Chennaio St.Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Kovalam – Chennai

7.2 SOLAR POWERED COMPUTER CENTRES

In 2010, a 'solar powered computer centre' in one of our schools in Pune was established. In February 2011, Steria India Foundation set up the second solar powered computer centre in Government Higher Secondary School Thiruporur, Kanchipuram (near Chennai). The new computer centre with 24 computers is now operates on solar power for 5 hours everyday for 6 days in a week, providing uninterrupted computer learning for children from Class 6 to Class 10. This project has been completely funded by Steria Norway.

7.4 CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (CDC)

Career Development Centres or CDCs have been set up mainly for children from Steria supported schools, who may be unable to pursue a degree course in college, because of their family’s financial status as well as being unable to get admission to a suitable degree course, yet would like to get trained for a decent job and support their families.

Career Development Centres are a partnership between Steria India CSR and NIIT Affirmative Action. These centres provided short term certified courses, typically of 3 to 6 months duration, in basic IT skills, accounting skills, language skills and other soft skills required for entry level jobs in India’s booming hospitality and retail sectors. These CDCs, as they are called, are set up with funds provided by

Page 17: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

Steria India CSR, while the course materials, as well as the faculty are provided by NIIT. Placement assistance is also provided to the candidates at the end of the course. Course fees for children of Steria supported schools are paid for by Steria India CSR, upfront, and these children are expected to pay back the fees, in small amounts, after they are placed and start earning for themselves.

In 2010, the first CDC was set up in partnership with NIIT and Noida Lok Manch (our NGO partner in Noida), within the premises of Noida Library (another Steria supported CSR project). By the end of December 2013, 1176 have been enrolled and 331 students were placed in jobs in various retail outlets in Noida.

The second CDC was set up in Chennai in February 2013 in partnership with NIIT Foundation., and is being sponsored by Steria Norway staff. With the objective of providing employment and short term trainings to youth and children from the neighbouring areas, trainings in basic IT courses, career readiness courses are imparted through this centre. So far, 685 students have been enrolled in various courses. 71 students have been placed in jobs in ranging from outlets like Dominos and KFC as well as companies catering to the manufacturing and BPO industry.

7.5 ONE STERIA ONE COUNTRY ONE SCHOOL PROGRAMME (OSOCOS)

• The 15 Steria global subsidiaries, each would support one school project in India. This would mean that they would sponsor computer centre, library, play area and other expenses incurred in setting up this project.

• Steria India CSR will be the implementation partner, and will be responsible for the execution, as well as taking the project forward.

• This will include computer lessons by Steria India staff volunteers, English language lessons, mentorship workshops, leadership clubs in computers, environment, theatre, and sports for the children, summer camps, and all the other activities that go along with this model, with the ultimate goal of giving

12 CSR INITIATIVES, LEARNING’S & CONTRIBUTION

Eighteen students from New Delhi Institute of Management (NDIM) were given the opportunity to get associated with the European based Information Technology (IT) firm, Steria, by being a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

There were two student coordinators, namely, Dheeraj Krishna and Shruti gupta. Since the focus area of Steria’s CSR is the education sector, we were given the task to teach the students of various sections of the schools adopted by the company.

We were asked to report at Sanskar Kendra School, Garhi, Sector-121, Noida on our first day.

Regarding the various tasks assigned to us for the project period, the various learnings and contribution are discussed below:

12.1DAY 1:- 23RD (MONDAY)We reached Sanskar Kendra School, Noida by 9 am. There we met Ms. Saswati Swain who warmly greeted us and briefed us about the company and the CSR initiatives taken up by the company. She informed us that the main focus area of the company is providing education to the children who cannot afford one. They target government/ NGO run schools. They have also established computer centers in schools to provide the students with basic IT knowledge.

She also informed us about their projects. Currently the company is engaged in transforming 15 schools in Noida. There are 63 projects out of which 47 are run by the Government and 3 schools are supported by their staff members.

They have divided their CSR program into here parts:

Program

In School Outside School Integrate employees

Page 24: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

12.1.1 IN SCHOOL:o The main focus of the company in the school is to set up computers and a

library center.o They also have a 10th buster program for the students of higher secondary

students.o They also have a mentorship program in place where the volunteers act as

mentors to guide the students in their studies, life and which career to choose.

o There is a career awareness program conducted by the company where a complete SWOT analysis of each student is done.

o They also help in training the trainer so that quality education can be provided to the students.

12.1.2 OUTSIDE SCHOOL:They have a scholarship program where the extra- ordinary students, who has the potential but has financial constraints are given then chance to peruse higher education at minimal expense.

For this they have a selection process to choose such students. The first criteria is that the student’s academic score should be more than 70%. These students are then interviewed. If they are satisfied, they visit their houses to assess the financial condition of the students. The final step is that the parents are called upon and they are made understood the importance and benefits of higher studies.

12.1.3 INTEGRATE EMPLOYEESThe funds are raised by the company, outside the company, friends, famalies and other companies as well.

Ms. Saswati shared with us that total 361 students have been benefitted with this program, out of which 117 are are studing for engineering, 2 for medical and 186 for BSC (Computer Science).

She also informed us that in Noida they have partnered with a NGO, Noida Lok Manch for their CSR initiatives.

Page 25: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

The NGO has two schools, both with the name of Sanskar Kendra School. The moto of the NGO is:

“PRATIBHA KABHI SADHAN KI MOHTAJ NAHI HOTI”

The students are provided with mid- day meals.

She introduced us to Mrs. Saksena who were the incharge of the NGO.

Then we all were divided into 4 groups in the ratio 6:5:5:4. We were sent to different schools that were adopted by the company.

My group members consisted of four members: Trinayan Thakuria, Gurleen Kaur Ahuja, Sonal Ram and Deepak Tikoo . We stayed in the Sanskar Kendra School we went for our introductory session which located at Garhi chawkandi, Noida sector 121. We were also asked to divide the subjects among ourselves and I went for teaching science to the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th, as I was from a science background and it was indeed my strength.

There we worked under the surveillance of the principal and other teaching staff. They briefed us about how can we teach the students, make them engaging and what she expects out of us. She informed us that the school students only till 7 th

standard and that the timings are different, i.e., for pre- primary and class 1 students the school gets over at 12:30 p.m. and for rest of the classes at 2 p.m.

Page 26: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

12.2DAY 2:- 24TH (TUESDAY)

As decided earlier, I had to take up my classes and thereby I divided my teaching time as, 9.30am to 12.30pm I took up 5 th 6th and 7th combined, as there were less number of students and again from 1pm to 2pm I took up class 4. We also made entries in the school register as to what we are going to teach the students of respective classes.

The strength of the combined class of 5, 6 and 7 was less (29 students) that day, because some of the students had gone for the picnic. First I gave the students my introduction- my name, where did I come from, what was the purpose of me coming there and teach them. Then I asked each of them to give their introduction which included their name, family members, and their place of living, their favorite subjects, hobbies and asked them what they thought of science as a subject.

As it was the first day and my first interaction with the students, I started off with the introduction. I explained them what actually is science, made them well acquainted with the different fields of science. Taught them the reason why we study science, what are the different background theories the subject covers, how they can utilize science in their lives, how they can shape their interest in accordance with the various outlets of science, how they can choose science as a career development subject in their lives and what are the various options that would open up for them if they go on for higher studies choosing science as an option of course.

I made the class more interactive and made them ask questions related to the various observations they make in their day to day life which made them curious and answered them.

Now it was time for their lunch in which they were provided khichadi. They used to bring their lunch boxes from home and a ma’am used to come to each class and serve the food to them. Meanwhile I started off with my lunch along with them and the khichri was undoubtedly very delicious.

Page 27: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

After the lunch break, at 1p.m, I shifted off to a new class which was class 3 and 4 combined.

Here also I started off by giving my introduction to them and then asking theirs. The class strength was more (39 students). Since I had teach science I conducted a similar session as to that of the other class. Here I found that the students were even more curious to gain knowledge. They asked me questions that made me quite happy and answering them was fun as those were all related to my studies until graduation.

I made a note of all their interests as it would help me to do my homework on them and find out what to teach them in my next interaction with them.

Here I observed that the students had a good knowledge about their surroundings and through these type of fun way learning they are more participative.

Now it was the time for the school to close. We helped the teacher in maintaining the discipline.

After the school got over, we shared our first day teaching experience with the teachers, our learnings and discussed with them our observations.

We were communicating to the place through metro and thereby we went on to the nearest metro station that was Noida city center which was approximately 5kms from the school.

Page 28: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

12.3DAY 3:- 25TH (WEDNESDAY)Today was a holiday in the school due to Guru Nanak Jayanti.

12.4DAY 4:- 26TH (THURSDAY)

Beginning the day with the same set of class that I was assigned, I took off with classes 5, 6 and 7 for the first half session. Today the class had all the students joining in and there were a total of 44 students.

By now I had planned that I would make this class get divided into two groups (boys and girls) and make them compete by constructing a working model of a volcano. So I went with my plan and started teaching them the concept of our earth’s crust and its components and the various layers of the earth’s crust and gradually moved on to the concept of how mountains are created and how volcanoes take place. Made them realize the entire concept of volcano eruption and along with it, taught them the concept of tectonic plates and their role and working.

I than requested them to ask questions related to the topic and entertained other science related questions as well.

While ending the session, I told them about my idea of creating the volcano model and also told them about the competition format. I then asked them to bring mud and bottles and other requirements such as colors, plants etc. for the purpose of decoration and ended the session.

After the break I took up class 4. For them I had planned that I would teach them the concept of earthquakes, volcanoes and the earth’s interior layers and then conduct a test later on.

Thereby I started off with the teachings, drew the various layers and them copy those and then took up questions. While ending my class I informed them that there would be a class test on these teachings and drawings I made them copy

Page 29: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

from the board and distributed chocolates I had bought for them and concluded my session.

After the school got over, we discussed with the teachers about the students responses and then wrote the day’s work in the register and returned as usual.

12.5DAY 5:- 27TH (FRIDAY)

This was an important day for me as it was the day I had planned to construct the two volcano models and was indeed very excited for it. I went to the school as usual and reached there by time and the students, seeing me at the gate started shouting in excitement. It was a feeling of joy, I encountered for the first time in my life. The 5, 6 and 7 standards were already sitting combined and I joined them after I was done at the headmaster’s office. I started off with the class and divided them with their groups of girls and boys. Both the boys and girls team were ready with their requirements, as I have already asked them to. I then went forward and started explaining them with how we were actually going to construct the entire model from start till end and took them to the open ground. All the students started to construct with me and under my guidance and finally the models were ready by 12.30pm. We than kept the models of both the teams aside in a safe place and closed the class for the day.

Then I shifted off to class 4 and here it was the test day. I provided them with printed sheets and asked them to write and draw whatever they had learned from yesterday’s class. I was amazed to see that everybody were doing it quite enthusiastically with colors and all. It was indeed a rewarding moment for me. I than collected their sheets and left the class promising them that I would declare the results the next day.

We than had a talk with the teachers, wrote the day’s work, and left for home.

12.6DAY 6:- 28TH (SATURDAY)

It was the day where I had to do two very important tasks. One was completing the volcano model by showing the process of eruption and the other was declaring the test results in which everyone had performed brilliantly.

I started off with the lower classes today.. had small interactive sessions with them and then combined all the lower classes till class 1 and made the watch a cartoon movie, on projector through my laptop which I had taken for the same purpose. After making them finish watching I parted my ways with them with a small greetings with them.

I than went for classes 5, 6, and 7, where I had to finish up with the volcano model eruption. For this I had taken all the requirements. I used baking soda, vinegar, dish washing detergent (vim), water, and food color (red). I stirred the entire mixture for a while and completed the entire eruption process. I than asked the teachers, as all were present there, to decide the winner. The boy’s model were voted as the best, any I rewarded the entire team with chocolates which I had bought for them. After completing all the formalities, I bid them goodbye and offered my best wishes to them.

After lunch I shifted off to class 4, where the results were about to be declared. I entered the class and delivered a lecture and gave them their results and distributed prizes to best 10 students. I than collected their feedbacks about their learnings from me. I than concluded the session and allowed them to leave for their homes.

We went to the teachers and had a feedback session with them. We had a photo session with them as well and then we finally came to the end of our assigned period of working days.

We were informed that our entire team had to come to the school for the last time on Monday for an interactive session with all the Steria members that were

supervising us along with the NGO members under whom we worked and the school teachers.

We then head for our homes.

12.7FINAL DAY:- 30TH (MONDAY)

On this day all the student that were assigned a CSR project activity under the Steria organization, had joined in again for the feedback session. We had an amazing questioning session with all the staff members present out there and suggested improvements and credited their work for the children till now. We than parted our ways from the organization and assured them to return in the near future for all sorts help we could provide and with that we completed our CSR live project.

12.8SHORT COMINGS AND SUGGESTIONS

The organization had till now done an exceptional job till now. There were hardly any short comings and even if there were, could be undermined as it would no doubt seem negligible in front of the doings.

Still as a suggestion, after working at the school for a week, I would like to say that they can inculcate a little more of practical knowledge regarding few of the important topics from various subjects as the students love it that way. And regarding the school, they need to name their washrooms and divide them in accordance of the genders. Apart from that I feel they are doing a perfect job.

13 DESIGNING A CSR MODEL

13.1A WORKING MODEL OF CSR FOR OUR COLLEGE TO HAVE WITHOUT ACADEMIC LOSS

The students of NDIM have lot of knowledge in various fields, both study related and as well as with other curricular activities. These students each can take up one children from any poor section of the society and in a way, give them vocational training on whatever specialty they can afford to show. This activity can be conducted once every week on Sundays for a certain period of time. Along with the students, the teachers can help as well. Again, as a form of CSR investment, the college can also appoint an IT specialist or a craft specialist to take up a bunch of children under them and teach them few of the required basic and professional skills in their fields.

Stated activities can be under taken and taught to the children:

1. Teaching the children with Microsoft office skills.2. Basic IT skills3. Basic programming languages such as “C”, “C++”, etc. 4. Any music instrument preferred by the students such as giving guitar

lessons or playing drums lessons.5. Various hardware skills training can be given such as working with the

projectors, operating the smart classroom devices so that later on the children can improvise on them and help the institute with the very same.

6. Some of the children can be given specialized sports lessons in various sports fields such as cricket, badminton, football, etc.

7. Study related teachings can be given as well, such as having science and math tutorial classes for smaller children of lower age group to create a stronger base for them in these very important subjects.

Page 35: CSR REPORT DOCUMENT

8. Giving them training in various crafts related activities such as hard paper file making, handloom works, and other such activities so that they can even have them for professional use later on if they wish to.

All these activities will be conducted on Sundays, in the college campus itself, and nearby available areas, for two to three hours every week and the students, teachers and professionals would act as a mentor of the children they would undertake and can even interchange the children among themselves in order to make them learn multiple skills at a time.

This idea would not require any proper investment, and at the same time is a very practical and completely applicable model for our college which can be operated without any sort of academic loss.

13.2CSR CHAMPION

I would be fortunate enough to have an opportunity to champion in my hometown and I handed over with one, I would link up with various schools, colleges, public NGO’s, Private training institutions, with whom I have contacts, and conduct seminars and workshops to impart moral and functional education to the various sections of the society, regarding issues such as awareness of various laws and regulations under the Indian and global forum, how open should we be regarding our children choosing for their field of study, how to encourage them to go for whichever field they want to pursue for themselves, issues like cleanliness and how we could contribute to that, fighting global warming, various government issues, which shall no doubt make the people, out there, more aware, more educated and indeed more rational and improve the human resource quality of our country.

And yes I would love to be a CSR champion of my organization in the future as I love to help people and after my recent CSR live project and all the learnings and experience I have gained from it , I am in fact looking forward to be a champion later on.

14 CONCLUSION

This CSR project was a great learning experience as far as I am concerned and all the activities undertaken by me during the period bought me great joy. The entire project was indeed a great success and made us realize the actual need of CSR as there are still people who are deprived of their basic needs and CSR is a very useful way of giving values to these section of people, so that the can one day fulfill their needs and be successful, and above all, make our country proud.
