Construction of a computer lab

UPS has been involved in the construction of computer labs in schools in different countries throughout the world:

1998: Guanajuanto, Mexico

2002: Zunhua, China

2003: Xibaipo, China

2005: Lipa, Poland

All locations have high levels of poverty and benefited significantly from a new computer lab in a local school

It was decided that in 2006 we wanted to build a computer lab in a school in India

Site selection and preparation

Based on poverty rates and a strong desire by local people to make changes for the better:

1. The village must accept UPS’ contribution of money, labour and materials

2. The local government must commit to match the UPS contribution

3. Members of the local community must volunteer to help UPS employees to complete the project

Navlakhumbre (in Maharashtra) was identified as the site for the build project

The process

October 2006: UPS employees and others (not professional builders) built a computer lab with 50 computers with satellite Internet access at a school in Navlakhumbre

We provided the manpower, not just the financial resources

Pre-fabricated parts and a foundation are provided in advance and the electricity has already been installed

Building completed and computers connected to the Internet in 5 days

The computer lab is not the end of the relationship, but just the beginning

Why we do these projects

“The computers provided here are not just about Internet access. They are about giving these children a window to see the world and new opportunities to attain their dreams.”

Ken Torok, UPS President Asia-Pacific

“These are the areas that often are the last to benefit from change.”
