doesnt sit well with many leading local runners, including former

Fast Times at Jamaica International InvitationalJamaicas Yohan
Blake clocked a personal best 9.80secs (2.2w) to destroyed a strong
line-up in the mens 100m dash at the Jamaica International
Invitational meet last night in Kingston. Blake, 21, ran what
onlookers describe as the perfect race to defeat his teammate
Daniel Bailey of Antigua (9.94); Mike Rogers, USA (9.96);
Michael Frater, Jamaica (9.98); Darvis Patton, USA (10.10); Oshane
Bailey, Jamaica (10.12); Richard Thompson, Trinidad & Tobago or

Blakes time remained a major buzz during the meet, the biggest
upset came in the mens 200m, when Jamaicas Nikel Ashmeade, running
on the outside, stormed from behind into the straight to post a
stunning meet record, PB and world leading 19.95secs. (1.6w).
Ashmeade, a St. Jago High School teammate of Blake and former
Carifta and Pan-Am champion, ran by 2009 World Championships 200m
finalist and training partner Steve Mullings (20.15) of Jamaica,
and 2009 Worlds 200m bronze medalist Wallace Spearmon (20.18) of

The Reggae Boys are without any doubt the best prepared team for
this Gold Cup. Recent winners of the Digicel Cup, the Jamaicans
impressed their opponents. We have seen in Martinique, a team well
organized, rigorous and talented that should count on the backing
of his players ten expatriates MLS.Ryan Tribe, 26 years, one of the
San Jose Earthquakes players believes the chances of the Jamaica to
achieve an exploit during this Gold Cup. In a recent
declaration
on the site of the Concacaf he confirmed supreme confidence in
his team. After failing in qualifying for 2007 and then in the
first round in 2009, Jamaica, 1ST nation from Concacaf at the FIFA
ranking (No.43) does not hide its ambitions. The coach Ted
Whitmore, who had participated in the World Cup in 1998, points
when he has a big plus. According to him, his team should not
suffer from disorientation since 14 Jamaicans evolve in MLS,
among
them, 9 are selected for the Gold Cup, Dane Richards teammate of
Thierry Henry to the New York Red Bulls. The first goal for the
Jamaicans is still to go through the first round and then to play
their luck, they who also consider that this Gold Cup is the best
preparation for the qualifying tournament to the World Cup. The

We remember the entire heroic course of Guadeloupe in 2007. Then
taken by Jocelyn Angloma, the Guadalupes had reached the semi
finals, eliminated by the future winner of the event, Mexico on the
score of 1-0. Gwada Boys in 2009 had to leave the tournament,
having granted a 5- 1 against Honduras.
Stphan AUVRAY, midfielder and captain of the Gwada Boys, and
player of the Sporting Kansas City of the Major League Soccer
(MLS), announced that his team will move toward this Gold Cup
differently prepared. A new team with a lot of hope on the part of
Guadalupe. The team advance without pressure, hoping to make a
journey so beautiful as that in 2007The first match against Panama
should as usual in this type of tournament set the tone for the
rest of the competition.
There are still the last two outsiders that are Cuba and
Grenada, which
they either did not prove unworthy in Martinique. In other way,
the United States 4 times winner and especially Mexico 5 times
winner and holding the title serve as ogres of the competition. The
teammates of Chicharrito held the title and advance to defend their

Carole BECKFORD Usain BOLT Publicist
'Carole BECKFORD Im currently the publicist for Usain BOLT as
well as being a sports manager since returning home to Jamaica. Ive
played professional volley ball and division 2 college basketball
for the NCAA in New York.
You created a company called Carole Beckford & Associates.
Would you please present your company to our readers?
The principal missions of our company is image management and
event planning and marketing. Primarily for sporting events and
atheletes?Yes, our mission is oriented mainly towards sporting
activities and celebrities but the government can be considered as
one of our clients resulting from past operations. We consider that
any major event involving the promotion of our country and brands
are important. Our readers are very interested in what youre really
doing for Usain. What is your role being the publicist of Usain
BOLT?Im essentially Usains media manager. Together we select media
entities with whom Usain will work with. During the competitive
season, Usain is covered a lot by various medias thus making the
job easier for us. However, during the off season we try to
strategically position him
in a way to ensure that we meet demand coming from different age
groups, like children. We work with different styles of publication
such as business, academics and lifestyle medias. It is our role to
make sure that as many people as possible across the world have
continuous access to information about him. Being quite a
personality, he works with foundation where he makes things for
children. He believes that children should be taken care of and
that they should all have the opportunity to grow up in a happy
environment. This is what his foundation focuses on.Therefore Usain
is present not only in publications but non-profit organizations.
He has tremendous presence on the social site Facebook with over 4
million fans and he has, I believe just close to 100 000 followers
on Twitter. He doesnt use Twitter a lot, and mostly tweets during
his competitions and of course when Manchester Utd is playing. This
allows him to communicate widely but yet to a close section of
people.A big fan of basket-ball and football (soccer), he has a
special relationship for these well known athletes and makes it a
point to attend a few games when he has the time.He says hes going
ready for the 2011 World Championship to be in Korea and of course
to successfully defend his titles before heading off to the
successfully the 2012 Olympics in London.
RENCONTRE MEETING / REUNIN
we get a lot of request mainly because of his personality too,
cause outside the fact that he perform well on the field Usain is
also an exciting person .

Caribbean Sport Mag - Mars 2011 - 16
It must be a difficult job sometimes...Difficult is an
understatement. We do a lot of traveling, we get a lot of requests
from social and non profit organizations as well as high demands
from his fans, through fan mails, for autographed pictures and
cards from Usain. But this is mainly due to his personality. Despite
the fact that he is a terrific athlete, Usain is an exciting
person. Reputed for being a kind guy, it is normal that a lot of
people want to meet with him. There are some who even fly to
Jamaica expecting to catch a glance of him in the streets of
Kingston, or to destinations where is to compete. Is he really a
nice guy?Yes... His a focused athlete, when hes competing he
focuses on his event, but outside of the competition he enjoys
having good parties, and watching or attending good football and
basket ball games. The Boston Celtics is his favorite basket ball
team. At the same time, he is still down to earth and has his
childhood friends with whom he hangs out with playing video games
as well as taking the time to be with his
family. So hes quite a busy person, as the track and field
season is long thus making him work 10 months each year. The other
two months are dedicated to sponsoring commitments. So he rarely
gets time off with such a busy schedule and now for the next two
years thats gonna be hectic. If you had to describe Usain, what
would you say?Hes a very focused individual that takes competition
seriously. But hes also quite a happy young man. He has very good
friends, his friends has been friends for a long time and yes he s
really a pretty good guy. When you started working with Usain, was
he already a star?He was a young champion. This is my second year
working with him, but Ive known of him before. After Beijing, when
he won the gold medal title, I think that the team decided that at
that point they needed to have assistance and a manager to respond
to the sudden media demand.
Why did he choose you? What makes you so different from the
others?I dont know. I think that I was just in the right place at
the right time and I try to contribute significantly to the job. So
lets talk about The Business of Sport conference,
why did you create this event?
The Business of Sport is critical for the region as we have
amazing talent in the Caribbean. We are an over supplier of talent!
And I believe that if the Caribbean were to become a host of
sporting events, they would have the support of their athletes. By
athletes I mean, football, basketball, soccer players, track &
field athletes, volleyballers and those institutions training these
people, as well as being equipped with technical capacities. Why
then not have management?

Caribbean Sport Mag - Mars 2011 - 17
The Caribbean is at the moment becoming much more known for
their contribution to the athletic world than just a place.
Countries such as Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Curaao to some
extents Cuba and the Bahamas have continued to produce top class
athletes and I think that the region has strong academic
institutions equipped to train these people. So I think that the
Business of Sport should be taken from an academic context of right
down to the field. So we talk about putting in policies to ensure
that we obtain the right support.
So you think that we are suffering due to fact of our ability to
produce great athletes in an unprofessional environment..
Absolutely. Business is all about creating jobs and incomes. So
I think once we have integrated that idea we then can improve the
quality of living here in the region. Its not a bad thing to
collaborate with international partners, but we should try ensure
that we meet the demand by supporting our own by being
professionals. I think the region has professionals but I dont
think the business of sport has been a focus. After competing in
international competitions, I think the academic system
has a critical role to play in instituting a curriculum that
will suggest a change of culture. I believe that we will be able to
manage our athletes effectively in a couple of years.
Do you sometimes think about French territories in these
projects dont you have the feeling that they are isolated from what
is going on or changing in Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados
etc...
The Caribbean will always be French, English and Dutch. We have
a relationship with Guadeloupe and Martinique in the traditional
sectors. But if we can combine our efforts in sport, and everybody
I think has their own market and their own niche, and together we
can effectively combine our strengths.
How did you choose your speakers and topics?
The topics were very easy, I didnt re-invent really, I think the
order of the topics came based on the way we wanted to approach it.
The speakers were people I have already worked with. I mean I
studied in the United States, and I worked intensively in sporting
sector, I sat on several committees and realized several projects.
For the first conference I called upon my friends, most of these
people represented here are people I worked with at some level. It
was important to get them, as they
understood the business, they came prepared to discuss how we
could move forward.
After this first event, what is the next step?
The conference is a bi-annual event but as Jamaica is
celebrating fifty years of independence next year, we are going to
host a special edition.
Right after this conference, we will prepare an action plan and
will see what the gaps are. We will talk with our academic
institutions and our policy leaders to create an opportunity to
move forward. I think at this stage, we cant want immediate actions
meaning immediate results but at the same point we need to start
something and somehow.
We are going to find the people qualified in this domain and
work with international universities that have offered their
support for example. Johnson & Wales University is here, with a
hospitality and sport management school, therefore we can establish
an exchange program to ensure that we can meet the demand of these
fast growing industries.Norman PEART, Usain Bolts manager -

Caribbean Sport Mag - Mars 2011 - 18
Will this conference always be held in Jamaica or do you
envision exporting it?
Weve gotten some requests that once back with our team we will
sit down with our hosting partners and other international partners
and lawyers to see how to proceed.
It obviously could become a franchise but at the same time its
the first year.
Certainly what we could say is that the conference will be held
bi-annually and the next official conference will be in 2013, but
there is going to be a special edition for Jamaica in 2012 for his
fiftieh anniversary.
What is Carole BECKFORDs next dream or challenge after
organizing such a conference and already being Usain BOLTs
publicist? Its a hard question. I also lecture at a local college
and think ultimately to become a university professor. Thats my
goal for now, and to continue to educate people about the business
of sport. I think its important. The Caribbean is known for
traditional stuff, you know beaches, basic travel, sugar cane,
rum... if we create our own opportunities for business outside of
the traditional arena then we ll be meeting economic and social
needs at the same time, and it may very help us to become more
developped.Nayabenghi.

For its 40th edition the city of Montego Bay hosted the Carifta
Games 2011. Although not having been designated initially and
called to compensate St Kitts & Nevis. It is a warm and
pleasant welcome for the athletes and the public that support the
young athletes. Sun, heat, music, a colorful event. This is
practically a tradition, the Carifta Games are to be a celebration
of athletics and this edition is no exception. It must be said that
the organizers were able to benefit from the efforts of LIME, the

This is not a surprise; it is obviously that Jamaica finished in
the first place in the classification for the medal. But this 2011
edition especially put us an appetite for the duel between Bahamas
and Trinidad & Tobago for the second place.
Verdict in France, Lille in 2011 for the junior World

DISCOVERY DCOUVERTE / DESCUBRIMIENTO
New coming in the Caribbean eventful calendar of athletic and of
leisure, the Tristar Nevis has managed a coup of master by bridging
athletes and spectators of an unusual event.
We knew the traditional canal crossing, between St Kitts and
Nevis, we also knew the regional triathlon of the island. Now all
of this is grouped around the appellation Week Sports of the
Caribbean.Implemented by Star Production, this new format linked
the athletic challenge, the fun and tourism. The crossing of the
Canal turns into StarMile 2.5 , triathlon in Tristar 111, all
organised in 1 week, with the participation of the best
triathletes, for a top-level competition in a heavenly setting.

TriStar 111 Nevis is part of a circuit of 12 organized
triathlons on different destinations by the corporation Star
Production SARL. These competitions are drawn for different
publics, understanding the children and beginners thanks to a
competitive program schedule. In Nevis is a full week of sporting
activities, which was held alongside the Triathlon, embellished
with a tourism
program for coaches and athletes themselves, from France, United
States, Great Britain, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago, Australia,
Antigua, South Africa etc...In St Kitts & Nevis, the event was
welcomed as it should; obtaining total support of the government
and tourism players and the TriStar of Nevis is already installed
in the athletic and tourism event calendar of the island and the
entire Caraibe.Necessary to say that the organizer Star Production
had launched very early its communication aiming at inciting the
eventual participants to leave for a week stay in the island. With
a very attractive program of events alongside the competition.

Do sports, and do it rightA seminar on the theme of sustainable
sport was held ahead of the competitionAn initiative that
particularly seduced us, a theme that we would like to find more
often in the context of sport competition. Nutrition, the
trainings, the prevention of injuries as many subjects widely
discussed...The small tips from the pros to stay in the sport, to
preserve the body and also as important, a thought for the
environment.Social Responsibility equally since has the example of
the others chase circuit; TriStar Nevis supports the association
Livestrong for the fight against cancer...
A memorable race...IThey were 112 swimmers from 10 to 66 years
at the departure of the beach of Oualie Nevis for the StarMiles 2.5
Nevis, ready to support the swim at the beach Reggae in St Kitts.
Olivier Marceau and Chris Mc Cormack, the Triathlon World Champion
respectively first and second in a little more than 56 minutes have
engaged in a duel of titans. For others the satisfaction was great
to meet this challenge, as for Daryl, 10 years and the youngest
swimmer of the competition, who finished yet at the 9th place of
the general classification. As a sign of destiny, they were 111 to
take the departure of the main event of the week under a blue sky,
by 28 degrees and in turquoise blue water, for 1 km of swimming,
100KM of bicycle and 10 km on foot.

At the arrival of the swim, the Canadian Wolfgang Guembel comes
out the water as the first one followed near by Chris Mc Cormack,
Olivier Marceau would appear a minute later. On the side of the
ladies, Emma-Kate Lidbury is the fastest, followed closely by the
Brazilian Fernanda Keller. On the road, the Mont Anaconda to climb 3
times has played its role as a peace judge and in this game it is
Chris Mc Cormack that comes once again as the strongest before
Wolfgang Guembel who has had a few difficulties to follow the rate
imposed by the Champion. Olivier Marceau victim of mechanical
problems being pushed off his opponents.
The test for the foot race has also brought its share of
difficulty in this test .She did not nevertheless suffice to
deprive Chis Mc Cormack of the final victory, ahead of Olive Tree
Marceau who has managed to catch up on Wolfgang Guembel that is
ahead on the line. With the Dames, the victory has not escaped to
Emma-Kate Lidbury ahead of Fernanda Keller. The last to cross the
line was Paula Price, 58 years and an enviable form, who was able
to benefit throughout the test from the encouragements of a warm

Move BeoSound 8 from room to room or hang it on a wall. All you
need is a power outlet, your music player of choice, and a desire
for real sound quality. Secure your iPad, iPhone, or iPod firmly in
the adjustable holder and prepare for a surprise. The sleek speaker
design gives little clue about the fidelity and depth of the sound
that is about to come your way. The conical shape of the speakers
on BeoSound 8 has two functions. Design-wise, the shapes disappear
to create an unobtrusive impression from most viewing angles and
make placement easier. In terms of audio quality, they eliminate
standing waves by avoiding parallel surfaces. It may sound very
technical, but youll find that the proof is in the experience.
