[Answerkey] CSAT-2014: History & Culture Questions with explanations& future strategy for CSAT-2015

    Mrunal (http://mrunal.org/)

  • Vs. CSAT-2013

  • CSAT-2013, History CSAT-2014

History culture occupied 15 questions 20

Freedom struggle portion: 5 questions, all easyfrom routine books same

Culture portion 8 MCQs: moderate to difficult level 15 Culture MCQ. Although 9 of themdirectly from routine books / sources.

    Harappa/Indus valley asked nope

Tough Question about Foreign traveler and samegenre repeated in subsequent CDS-CAPF exams Did not ask

Question on Bhakti Saints Dadu Dayal, Guru Nanak,Tyagaraj Dadu Dayal asked again.

Sankhya school, tough question Easy question on philosophical schools

    Rock cut caves Cave Sculptures

Every subject that rises to the top and then falls down.

  • Once upon a time Geography used to occupy 20-25 questions, now back to 10 questions.Same way traditional history (kingdoms and wars) used to occupy 20+ question, now noteven a single question.Right now Culture is reaching the peak but perhaps after 2-3 years, itll also begin to decline(which will be good to reap the demographic dividend, by the way!)

    Vs other exams (CDS, CAPF)

    Some convergence, some divergence

    CAPF, CDS (2014) CSAT-2014

CAPF: Building not associated with ShahJahan Akbars IbadatKhana

CAPF: Who were Ahadis?Who wereMahattara andPattakila?

    CDS: correct statement about Mahajanpada.

    Which place(Mahajanpada)Buddh did notvisit?

CDS: Match the temples with townsMonetary vsplace; sculpturevs place

CDS: Freedom struggle rather too easy- most can be solved fromSpectrum, TMH, Tamilnadu textbooks same

CAPF-2014: Freedom struggle rather tough questions. e.g. Who translatedNil-Darpan to English; Name of regiment whose soldiers who participatedin 1857 mutiny and were cremated recently?

    Freedomstruggle veryeasy.

    Harappa asked nope

    Buddhism-Jainism asked Only Buddhism

    Diculty Level

Debatable, depends on preparation level. Nonetheless, I classify them to prove two points

  • 1. You dont have to tick 100/100 because no one can.2. Good number of questions from regular books / websites and theyre easy in nature.

Therefore, coaching not essential for success.

Easy Questions: Given verbatim given in routine books

    Bijak &Pushtimarg

Easy: Can be solved with combo of New NCERT + NIOSDifficult:When mind develops the doubt: what if Dadu Dayal also wroteBijak?

6 schools ofphilosophy List Available in NIOS, Lucent, TMH.

Ibadat Khana available in NIOS, Lucent

    Garba,Mohini,Yaksha

Lucent, TMH, ccrtiindiia.Mohini and Yaksha- routinely appear in theHindu, and have been asked inboth prelim and mains. Therefore, one is supposed to memorize it.

Kalaripayattu Given in NIOS. Routinely appears in theHindu lifestyle.

SatyamevJayte Verbatim answer in India Yearbook ch.2 National emblems

    Chaityamonth

Same as above. Although some players may have downplayed this chapterbecause UPSCs earlier trend of moving away from GK facts. aka Double Bluffbackbreaking move .

    Classicallanguage

List appeared TheHindu and PIB of Feb 2014 when Odiya was added. Therefore, had to be memorized like Gods own words.

Freedomstruggle All five questions available in Spectrum, TMH, Bipan Chandra, TN state books.

    Medium level difficulty

Panchayatan Available CCRTIndia website, but difficult to recall during exam

Sattariya dancers Given on ccrtindia but there are 50 dozens terms like this.

    TM

  • Ridiculously Dicult

When answer not available directly in the routine books and/or nearly impossible to recall inexam.

    1. Buddh &Avanti

Even after smart elimination, youre left with two options andeverything boils down to just one fact- whether Buddh visited Avanti ornot?

    2. Tabo, Alchi,Lhakhangmonastery

Who has time to memorize so much data? Better invest energy inpreparation of maths, reasoning and comprehension for CSAT- Paper2.

    3. Sculpture vsSite

Hard to dig whether Vishnu saving Goddess earth is given on Mt.Abu ornot?

    4. Manganiyarmusician

Random article on Indian express. And even if this was given in books. ?

    5. Mahattara,Pattakila

Had to dig through random google books.

How to prepare Culture for CSAT-2015?

First we have to objectively check which sources were useful?

    Disclaimers:

0.5 means =half of the answer available. (i.e. two statement true/false type question).Last column: fell from sky- Ans. No means the given question was available in atleast ONEstandard reference book / source. Total 9 out of 15 =60% culture questions came fromstandard sources. It could be higher than 60%, e.g. lucent /TMH/Spectrum may have Sattariya or Mangniyarsomewhere but because of time constrain I have not been able to wade through all pages.

  • So, how to approach Culture?

    1. (MUST) Tamilnadu Class11 (Ancient-Medieval) + New NCERT History (Class7 to 12) + NewNCERT Sociology (Class 11, 12)a. all of them available at Mrunal.org/download (http://mrunal.org/download)b. Although not much came from TN/NCERT this time.c. But one exam insufficient to through them away. Theyve proved their worthiness in CDS

and CAPF 2014.d. those who have old ncert well, and good but those who dont have- there is no need to

lose sleep, Tamilnadu works just fine.2. (MUST) Base material = NIOS Culture material (http://mrunal.org/download) + CCRTindia

(http://ccrtindia.gov.in/)a. You dont have to manually wade through all webpages of CCRTindia, because in earlier

[Write2win] competition, Sandeep Yadav had compiled the note from that site, includingphotos. Click me. (https://files.secureserver.net/0snqDZAzytgHtr)(although his note is bitold, some new pages have been added by that website, so you might have tomanuallymake visit add few new topics accordingly).

    3. (MUST) India yearbook Ch1, 2 and 3. [for geography, culture, polity respectively].4. (MUST) TheHindu. Classical language, dance- all routinely appeared in 2014s newspapers.5. (if time permits) General Studies manual (http://www.flipkart.com/general-studies-civil-

services-preliminary-examination-paper-1-2014-english-1st/p/itmdpf6nb6yfeyb7?pid=9781259064371&affid=mrunalrugm).a. As such maximum no. of questions from it but if you look at the table again- it has lot of

overlapping with NIOS. Compared to NIOS, the GS manual is too bulky, contains lot ofunnecessary factoids. So beyond a point, bad cost:benefit.

    b. But practice the mock questions given at the end of each section in GS manual.c. Ive used Tata McGraw-Hill (TMH) general studies manual 2014 as reference because they

gave me free review copy.d. But any manual works just fine- Arihant, Spectrum, Pearson. Even old/second hand used

copy works fine. Because static content remains one and same, irrespective of edition.6. Beyond this, Cost:benefit wise, youll gain more from pumping that more hours in learning

maths, reasoning and comprehension for CSAT Paper II. so dont waste remaining jawaani inpreparing culture only.

    7. You may skip Spectrum Facets of Indian culture (http://www.flipkart.com/facets-indian-

  • culture-english/p/itmdyzfqumhuxqh8?pid=9788179305188&affid=mrunalrugm). Becausecontent wise, did not help much in the Mains-2013 or in prelims (CSAT-2014). It hascumbersome typesetting, no photos. Therefore, hard to memorize. Situation similar toCongress seats under Modi wave.

Disclaimers same as previous table.TN= Tamilnadu class 12 History textbook.(new) NCERTs are good read but Ive not used them in above comparison table because theydont cover enough factoids, policies of past governor generals, their policies etc. So, youllhave to augment It with some other book anyways. therefore TN class12 is better as the

  • base textbook.

Anyways how to approach History for CSAT-2015?

(MUST) Tamilnadu Class12 [or OLD NCERT] as a starting textbook.(Good) Spectrums Brief History of Modern India, By Rajiv Ahir. (Available in both English(http://www.flipkart.com/brief-history-modern-india-english/p/itmdyzfqtbszden5?pid=9788179305171&affid=mrunalrugm) | Hindi medium (http://www.flipkart.com/adhunik-bharat-ka-etihas-16th/p/itmdz8426ug5phxu?pid=9788179305201&affid=mrunalrugm))

Although TMH General studies Manual and Spectrum both have same number ofquestions but spectrum far thinner and easier to revise. and has proved worthy even inMains-2013 (http://mrunal.org/2014/01/gs1-freedom-struggle-indian-history-answerkey-analysis-of-mains-2013-questions-dalhousie-women-foreigners-studyplan-booklist-for-upsc-mains-2014.html)Bipan Chandra (http://www.flipkart.com/india-s-struggle-independence-1857-1947-english/p/itmdr86xzk5fkxca?pid=9780140107814&affid=mrunalrugm) has its utility in themains, essay. It should be read depending on the time factor. As far as only prelimpreparation is concerned, youre better off with Spectrum because its far more revisionfriendly than Bipan etc.

    What about Ancient and Medieval?

In the 90s exams, it used to be Vedic age, Ancient kingdoms, Medieval kingdoms andfreedom struggle. And now its just Freedom struggle and Culture. Whatever they ask from ancient-medieval,its mainly focused on culture part. so for Ancient-medieval, refer to Culture studyplan givenabove.Besides, in Tamilandu Class 11 already covers the kingdom angle e.g. kings vs religionpatronized, king vs monument, king vs policies and so on.Related: How to approach History for Mains-2014: Click me (http://mrunal.org/2014/01/gs1-freedom-struggle-indian-history-answerkey-analysis-of-mains-2013-questions-dalhousie-women-foreigners-studyplan-booklist-for-upsc-mains-2014.html)

anyways, enough analysis, lets begin solving the paper:

  • [Act 1] Religion and Philosophy (3MCQ)

    Buddh & Avanti

    1. Which of the following Kingdoms were associated with the life of the Buddha?

    1. Avanti2. Gandhara3. Kosala4. Magadha

Select the correct nswer using the code given below.

    A. 1, 2 and 3B. 2 and 4C. 3 and 4 onlyD. 1, 3 and 4

To get a better mental picture, first lets find modern day equivalent of those places

Lucent GK Section Indian History page 15, table 3.1

    1.Avanti Malwa

2.Gandhara Western part of Pakistan and Afghanistan

3.Kosala Districts of Faizabad, Gonda, Bahraich in UP

4.Magadha Patna, Gaya, Nalanda in Bihar area.

    Viewpoint #1: Avanti is right

We can eliminate choices involving number 2 (Gadhara) because Buddh never travelled toPakistan.

    A. 1, 2 and 3B. 2 and 4C. 3 and 4 only

  • D. 1, 3 and 4

So we are left with C or D.Alternatively, As per Britannica (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/83105/Buddha)

Buddh born in Lumbini, in Kosala kingdom.=> 3 must be included.Buddh died in Kusinara, in Magadha kingdom=> 4 must be included.if you eliminate answer choices that donot have 3 and 4 together => still we are left with C orD.Therefore, final answer depends on whether Buddh went to Avanti or not.

Following two sources, suggest that Buddh himself never visited Avanti

    Source what does it say?

Region in Indian History editedby Mahendra PratpaPage 47(http://books.google.co.in/books?id=ryjt6Pg7YKYC&pg=PA47)

Once Buddha was invited by King Pradyota of Avanti, buthe declined to go because of his old age, and deputedMaha Kachchayana, a native of Avanti to impart histeachings there. => #1 Avanti is wrong. This eliminatesoption A and D.

    Historical Buddha: HansWolfgangPage3(http://books.google.co.in/books?id=h2Qh2zzNkNkC&pg=PA3)

Avanti lay outside the area visited by buddha, and wasconverted to his teaching by his disciple Mahakaccana.

    Therefore,answer: only C only 3 (Kosala) and 4(Magadha.)

    Viewpoint# 2: Avanti is wrong

    1. Question uses the word associated with Buddhs life. So, it is not essential that Buddhhimself must have visited the place. Even sending a disciple (Kachchayana), counts as placeassociated with his life.

    2. Buddh had travelled to Avanti, as per this source Link.(http://www.buddhapadipa.org/dhamma-corner/last-journey-of-the-buddha/)

    Therefore, answer (D) 1, 3 and 4

  • Final answer: official answerkey of UPSC.

    Bijak & Pushtimarg

    Q2. Consider the following statements:

    1. Bijak is a composition of the teachings of Saint Dadu Dayal.2. The Philosophy of Pushti Marg was propounded by Madhvacharya.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

    A. 1 onlyB. 2 onlyC. Both 1 and 2D. Neither 1 nor 2

    Statement #1 is wrong because:

NCERT class7, Page 116: Kabirs ideas were later collected and preserved in Bijak.NCERT Class12-Ancinent Past, page 161: The Kabir Bijak is preserved by the Kabirpanth (thepath or sect of Kabir) in Varanasi and elsewhere in Uttar PradeshSpectrum Culture: Kabir founded a community Kabirpnathi, who consider Bijak, acollection of his verses, as their scripture. (But in Vallabhacharya section, Spectrum is silenton the fact he founded Pushtimarg)Therefore, as such Bijak = Kabir. Hence statement 1 should be wrong. But a doubt arises, what if Dadu Dayal also composed Bijak? The answer is NO. As per BhatiPoetry, Neeti Sadarangani page 123 (http://books.google.co.in/books?id=WVQrKJbJ2JIC&pg=PA123): Bijak, which is the scripture of the Kabir Panth, only containsworks attributed to Kabir. Therefore, statement 1 definitely is wrong.

    Statement #2 is wrong because

NIOS Culture material,Page 136: Philosophy in Medieval India:Vallabhacharyas philosophy came to be known as Pushtimarga (the path of grace).

  • Same page, Madhavacharya is listed under Dvaita => he is not associated with Pushtimarg.Alternate source: Lucent GK page 71: Vallabhacharya (1479-1531)- he propounded thephilosophy of Pushtimarg.

Hence answer D neither 1 nor 2 are correct.

    6 Schools of Indian Philosophy

Q3. Which one of the following pairs does not form part of the six systems of IndianPhilosophy?

    A. Mimamsa and VedantaB. Nyaya and VaisheshikaC. Lokayata and KapalikaD. Sankhya and Yoga

NIOS Culture material, Chapter 8 page 117 onwards

Six system of Indian philosophy are

    Samkhya Prakriti and Purush

    Yoga Releasing Purush from Parkriti

    Nyaya Logical thinking

Vaisheshika Realistic and objective philosophy of universe

Mimamsa Analyzing Samhita and Brahmana portion of Veda.

    Vedanta Philosophy of Upanishad.

So, accordingly, eliminate the correct terms. (Because weve to find the wrong term)

    A. Mimamsa and VedantaB. Nyaya and VaisheshikaC. Lokayata and KapalikaD. Sankhya and Yoga

  • Therefore, answer C Lokayata and Kapalika donot form 6 system of Indian philosophy.

    Alternate source:

    1. TMH History section Page 15. Six orthodox school of Hindu philosophy are Nyaya,Vaisheshika, Sankhya, Yoga, Mimansa and Vedanta. Eliminate options accordingly and weare left with answer C.

    2. Lucent GK table given on page7

    [Act 2] Architecture (3MCQ)

    Ibadat Khana

Q1. Ibadat Khana at Fatehpur Sikri was

    A. the mosque for the use of Royal FamilyB. Akbars private chamber prayerC. the hall in which Akbar held discussions with scholars of various religions.D. the room in which the nobles belonging to different religions gathered to discuss religious

    affairs.

    Answer is C: Scholars because

NCERT class7 History, Chapter4, Page 54: While Akbar was at Fatehpur Sikri during the 1570she started discussions on religion with the ulama, Brahmanas, Jesuit priests who wereRoman Catholics, and Zoroastrians. These discussions took place in the ibadat khana. Henceanswer CNIOS Culture material, Page 49: On every Thursday, scholars from different religions came todebate on religious issues raised by Akbar. This was done at the Ibadat Khana in Fateh PurSikri at AgraTMH: History section, page 74

    btw, A similar question in CAPF-2013 (http://mrunal.org/2013/10/answerkey-capf-2013-history-mcq-questions-solved-with-explanation-reference.html).

    Panchayatan

  • Q2. With reference to the cultural history of India, the term Panchayatan refers to

    A. an assembly of village eldersB. a religious sectC. a style of temple constructionD. an administrative functionary

    http://ccrtindia.gov.in/templearchitecture.php (http://ccrtindia.gov.in/templearchitecture.php)

Panchayatana a temple that has a central shrine surrounded by four other shrines.

    Therefore, answer C

    3. Alchi temple complex Ladakh

Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?

    A. 1 onlyB. 2 and 3 onlyC. 1 and 3 onlyD. 1, 2 and 3

    Ans: (C) 1 and 3 only:

Tabo=Spiti and Alchi=Ladakh. There are correct as per National geographic page.

  • (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/india-ancient-art/interactive-map.swf?msc=mediariver)Lhotsava Lhakhang, Nako is in Himachal Pradesh as per Frontline(http://www.frontline.in/static/html/fl2921/stories/20121102292106100.htm). Should be Tuesday instead of Wednesday as given by all keys

hritiGuys, who are getting 220 -250 as per different answer keys plz tell watr u doing..

I am getting 230(Vaji) and 250(Shankar) not sure wats gonna be myscore..but i am not able to gain confidence if I should start preparing formains..

    Plz suggest???

IAS aspirantDude,if this is your score through VAJI,then recheck your answersthrough another key, they have done blunders, but mind it dontcheck CL for sure. And secondly start preparing.

AbhayVaji is definitely wrong in 3-4 question like crab and mite one.But margin of error in case of CL has always been lowespecially in paper 2. Test Funda is horrible for paper 1 butfor paper 2 again read their solution pdf file. They haveexplained every question nicely and thus its keys are 99percent authentic. As far as paper 1 is concerned I lovedgaurav agarwals solutions and chronicle.

AbhayWhat are you waiting for?Yes, start preparing for it. Before pre results are out get over withat least 30-40 Essay practice, GS1 and 4. They will be covered tillthen if you work sincerely. As your score is good I guess you onlyneed to practice projecting your thoughts in a synchronizedmanner. If by CL keys you are above 230, forget everything andwork hard! You are gonna have a brilliant journey ahead. My score is too shuttling between 243 to 252 with all Vaji, Byju,Chronicle, Rau and CL keys (244, Best and accurate). And I am verysure error percentage will be in plus minus 3 percent range. I hadstarted mine yesterday only on Ganesh chaturthi. i wish Bappabless all serious aspirants with his divinity. Go with toppers interviews, start writing practice of essays andcome out of confusion, it will only impede your prep.ATB (Y)

ASHUTOSHhi, annu priya i am also a student of civil engineering. ihave completed my btech this year and given IES exam.in my opinion if you observe the syllabus of IES ANDCSE( syllabus of optional subject) of civil engineering itis same also papers are also of same pattern andtrend. so any ies and cse and be prepapred together.also in IES exam general ability paper contains 200mark and for cse aspirant it is a cake ( easy because 60questions are of gk type and if you are preparing forcse then you can solve at least 50 question correctlyand it will enhance your score upto 50 mark)

Annu PriyaThanks Ashutosh for your suggestions..are youtaking civil engg as an optional in CSE? coz I amnot sure if i would be able to handle civil engg asan optional in CSEThanks for replyingbtwwhich college are you from?

AbhayYes. I am from HBTI.Its good to hear your score with your little prep. Keepworking hard and just keep in mind the unpredictabilityof it and dont leave any topic untouch.Regarding your choice of career is concerned I am notgoing to tell you what to pick or what not. Civilexamination is too hard to predict. If you knowSomvanshi sir he cracked in 3rd attempt and Nehamam in first. It purely depends on you and your levelof prep. Certainly IES is better than gate. Ies and civilservices are equal all india services. Previous is calledas technocrat and later bureaucrat. Bureaucrat hasgreater perks reaponsibilities and powers thantechnocrat and thia prompted Akshat to give exam lastyear and he scored 4th rank. Gate is for those whowants to go either for PSU job or teaching career. Asper as my experience gate qualified has very lowchances in corporate world as compared toengineering graduate. So if you want to go for teachingopt gate. and if want to work under president astechnocrat in infrastructure sectors of govt give ies. Iesis not tough. Harcourtians are most of the time in toppositions. Consult your senior for that who has giventhat exam and cracked it.Now if you want to go in this civil services only sooneror later start preparing for it from today only and giveprelims only when you have sufficient confidence.Mrunal has chalked down brilliant strategy for it. rashiSir, the question is about the life of Buddha, not the time of Buddha.Buddha never visited Avanti. Besides, later Gandhar was also convertedin his teachings by his disciples, but it will not be considered associatedwith Buddha. Sattriya is a folk tradition of Assam, and Tuslidas , Meeraand Kabir didnt compose any raga and tala, but the poems andsonnets. Correct me if I am wrong.
