Options

Six hours of your 36-hour degree program are flexible, and allow you to pursue your own interests. You may choose from a number of options:

• Conference Attendance (3 credit hours)• Professional Certification (3 credit hours)• Applied Project (3-6 credit hours)• Science Research Project (3-6 credit hours)• Special Topics Course (3 hours each)• You may build a plan that combines any two of these

options (budget limitations apply).I have a budget to support your activities, for instance,

the MSACS pays all travel, lodging, food, and fees to attend a professional conference.

Your plan must be complete and approved by me by the end of this semester.

Conference Attendance

The MSACS will pay all expenses for you to attend a professional conference. To earn your three graduate credit hours, you will attend the conference and then select one topic for further study upon your return, culminating in a 6-10 page paper due April 2006.

I have identified three options for you to choose from, depending on how you would like to direct your study:

1. Embedded Systems Conference, March 2006 in San Francisco (dates to be determined).

2. Joint International Multi-conference, June 2005, Las Vegas.

3. Game Design Conference, San Jose, November 2005 (dates to be determined).

Conference: Embedded Systems

• This year, being held in San Francisco, March 6-10, the time frame for your option in 2006 will be similar.

• This conference includes days of workshops and short courses for practitioners. Very fun and interesting. Content on programming, embedded design, real-time, new technologies, new techniques, etc. You can follow the link to look at the conference program.

Conference: Joint Multi-Conference

• The 2005 International MultiConference in Computer Science & Computer Engineering held in Las Vegas every year. June 27-30, 2005.

• Check the conference web site for more information:• http://www.world-academy-of-science.org/IMCSE2005/

ws• This is an international conference consisting of 16

separate area conferences ranging across the discipline of computer science, from software to hardware, AI, Parallel, Embedded, Graphics, Applications, Foundations, etc.

• This is a good quality conference that some of us (KSU CS faculty) have presented at.

• In addition to paper presentations, also student posters and keynote speakers.

• If you are interested in the science of computing, this is a great conference for you.

Conference: Game Developers

• XTREME Game Developers Conference• http://www.xgdx.com/• Last year held in Mountain View California

(near San Jose) in October.• This is a relatively new conference for folks

interested in computer game development. Talks range from beginner level to advanced and sophisticated.

• Keynote address was fascinating last year.• Last year held in the Computer History

Museum, which is wonderful and worth the trip. They have machines from the earliest days of computing.

Professional Certification

• The MSACS will also fund part of all of a profession certification, depending on cost.

• Almost any legitimate computing certification is possible, from networking to Oracle, Microsoft to UNIX/LINUX. Maximum funding from the MSACS is capped at about $3K, depending on overall budget.

• If you choose to do a certification, it is up to you to find a provider/vendor, determine the cost and time-frame, and present your proposal to me for negotiation or approval.

• You need to get separate approval for a certification program from me, that then becomes incorporated into your plan of study, which must be approved by me in April 2005.

• So if you choose this option, you can’t wait until the last minute to figure out what you would like to do.

Applied Project

• This could be a worthwhile project where you investigate a technology, learn a new system, develop a product or prototype, extend a project from your work, etc., etc.

• Choose either a 3 hour or 6 hour project, allowing you to chose another 3-hour option as well.

• You have to think out what you would like to do, and propose that to me in time for me to evaluate your proposal, and for you to make changes to it, and still be complete by April. So you must start working on your concept NOW!

• I have funding available to support hardware and software purchases, and/or conference travel to present your work.

Science Research

• This could be a worthwhile computer science research project.

• You will need a CS faculty member who agrees to serve as your research project advisor and mentor.

Special Topics Courses

• Occasionally, we are able to offer special topics courses in different areas of computer science.

• Last year for instance, we offered a courses in security and game design, and this semester we have the software reuse course.

• These courses can be used to complete your three or six of your applied studies hours.

• I do not yet have a schedule of possible “extra” special topics hours.

• … So you will need to identify in your plan, an alternative choice, in case the special topics course that turns-up is not to your liking. Or, identify special topics as a possible alternative to one of the other choices.

• Your purpose this semester is to develop a plan of study for your degree, that includes your choices for how you will invest your six hours of applied studies.

• Due April 2005, in time for me to evaluate and approve, in order to give you a grade for the course.

• Approved: grade of ‘A’, not yet approved by my deadline to turn in grades: ‘C’.

• Submission Formats:• Later this semester, we will talk about the

format for proposing your projects, and a format for your MSACS Plan-of-Study.
