(a) Two concentric spheres of diameters dl = 0.8 m and d2 = 1.2 m have surfacetemperatures T1 = 450 K and T2 = 300 K respectively. If the surface emissivities are0.5 and 0.05 respectively, determine the net radiation heat exchange between the twospheres.

(b) The filament of a 75 W light bulb may be considered as a black body radiating into ablack enclosure at 70° C. the filament diameter is 0.10 mm and length is 5 cm.Considering the radiation, determine the filament temperature .

(a) Water flows at the rate of 60 kg/min through a double pipe counter flow heatexchanger. Water is heated from 50°C to75°C by oil flowing through the tube. Thespecific heat of the oil is 1.7kj/kg.K. The oil enters at 120°C and leaves at 70°C.Theoverall heat transfer co-efficient is 340 W/m K.Calculate the following (i) Heatexchanger area, (ii) Rate of heat transfer.

(b) What is the use of LMTD & Effectiveness-NTU method in heat exchangers?

SECTION - I

(a) Define Hydrology and list out the applications of hydrology in engineering.

(b) The shape of a catchment approximately resembles a square of side 8 km. Withreference to an x-y coordinate frame whose origin is coinciding with one of thecomers of the catchment the locations of the four comers of the catchment are (0,0),(8,0),(8,8) and (0,8). These are four raingauges A, B, C and D within this catchmentwhose positions with reference to the same coordinate frame are (2,2), (6,2), (6,6)and (2,6) respectively. The rainfall recorded by the raingauges A, B, C and D duringa storm are 8, 6, 9 and 11 cm respectively. Determine the average depths of rainfallover the catchment by Arithmetic mean and Thiessen methods.

Determine the missing rainfall at X byInverse distance method, if the storm rainfalls at the four surrounding gauges are 73,89, 68 and 57 mm respectively.

Design a concrete mix for construction of an elevated water tank using ACI methodfor the following data.The specified design strength of concrete is 20 MPa at 28 days measured on standardcylinders. Standard deviation can be taken as 4 MPa. The specific gravity of FA andCA are 2.65 and 2.70 respectively. The dry rodded bulk density of CA is 1500 kg/m3

and fineness modulus of FA is 2.80. Ordinary Portland Cement (Type I) will be used.A slump of 50 mm is necessary. CA is found to be absorptive to the extent of 1 %and free surface moisture in sand is found to be 2 %. Assume any other essential datasuitably.
