Its etiologic agents, Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, are usually found in nature in pigeons and other birds feces, and in rotting wood. Its frequency has increased significantly after the time of transplantation and the use of immunosuppressive drugs and, at the time, with the AIDS epidemic. This study is justified because the Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are cosmopolitan fungi found in different niches in different environments and can thus cause damage to the functions of immunocompetent patients, increasing morbidity and mortality in these patients. To conduct this study, research was done through literature review of articles and journals that depict the subject. The findings of this study open an interesting perspective on the eco- epidemiology of Cryptococcus gattii, once it was noticed that their presence is not associated only with specific ecological niches, and it can be found in different regions and trees.
