Wade has got to go!” This year’s march drew in a record crowd of 650,000 people, most of whom were young, enthusiastic pro-life advocates. The Crusaders ar- rived at the capitol just after midnight on Thursday, January 24th, and were somewhat surprised by the tempera- ture of 19 degrees. The 2012-13 year was anoth-er exciting season in college football. The SEC landed six teams in the top ten final BCS standings including the underdog Texas A&M from the SEC West. Texas A&M was able to qualify largely because of the efforts of Heis-man Trophy winner Johnny Manziel also known as “Johnny Football” and “Johnny Heisman.” The Texas A&M Aggies proved themselves worthy enough to contend in the toughest conference in the country. They had managed to pull off a couple of big wins including a 38-13 win against Mississippi State and a huge upset over Alabama. The Aggies also ham-mered the Oklahoma Sooners 41-13 in the 2013 Cotton Bowl in which John-ny Manziel reached a record breaking total of 516 total yards. It sure leaves questions as to how good Texas A&M really is in comparison. The year also had some negative moments. On one hand, there were the heavy sanctions on Penn State. After the the scandal surrounding former head coach

New Wave in Crusader Basketball

College Football Produces Shining Star

Freshman Vance Burwell practices as often as possible with the varsity squad to strengthen his skills on the court. When asked about having a role model on the team, Vance replied, “Jordan Lumpkins ‘13 is like my brother, and there is no better person I see as a role model, on or off the court.” Vance hopes for a future in which he will be com-pared to D.J. Augustine and eventually make it to the NBA. This goal motivates Vance everyday. The other powerhouse freshmen Kevin Bird and Jeremy Horn both abandoned their football careers in pursuit of basketball. Irvin Smith is the only player that remains a dual threat. Over the years, students such as Jordan Lumpkins ‘13, Jabbar Singleton ‘13, and Jalen Gray ‘13 have made major con-tributions to the Crusader Basketball Team. But these players will not be around forever. Players such as Jordan Cornish ‘14 will have to pick up the load next year, but before long he will be on his way out as well. Varsity players have taken freshmen such as Vance Burwell, Kevin Bird, Jeremy Horn and Irvin Smith under their wings to form them into becoming the next wave of elite Crusader basketball players.

Jerry Sandusky, the NCAA decided to hit Penn State with multiple sanctions including a $60 million fine, a 4 year postseason ban, a vacation of all wins dating to 1998, reduced scholarships, and a 5 year probation. However, the team pulled together for an 8-4 record, including a 24-21 OT win against Wis-consin. Penn State coach Bill O’Brien says that his team can continue to move forward. Nevertheless, the Nittany Li-ons did not appear in a bowl game this year. Another team that made an ap-pearance in a bowl game this year was the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. They played the #2 ranked Alabama Crim-son Tide in the Discover BCS National Championship on Jan.7 in Miami. In the preseason rankings this year, the Irish were nowhere to be seen in the Top-25, as most thought we would see USC (Southern California) against an SEC candidate instead. After a disas-trous season for USC, Notre Dame slowly climbed up the polls until they were ranked number one with a championship to play for. After a

devastating four quarters of football for the Irish, Alabama annihilated Notre Dame, 42-14. With this title, the Tide earned its third national champi-onship in the past four years: Texas (‘10), LSU (‘12), and Notre Dame (‘13). Coach Nick Saban also won his fourth National Championship, most all-time since 1936, and second only behind legendary Bear Bryant. Unable to stop Alabama, the SEC additionally won their 7th consecutive title. Notre Dame was completely overwhelmed by the size and strength of Alabama during the entire game. Missed tack-les, poor pass-coverage, and lack of energy led Notre Dame to its loss. The Fighting Irish’s perfect season along with all the hype about Manti Te’o and their superb defensive front that went into the game quickly vanished with Alabama’s total dominance throughout the game. With all fairness to the Irish, they deserved to be ranked #1 and the chance to play in the championship with an undefeated season.

However, looking back on the outcome of the game, it is easy to see the rea-son to have post-season playoffs. In fact, starting in 2014, a four team BCS playoff system will be activated. This would allow teams of equal merit to battle each other out instead of having a complete blowout reminiscent of the 2013 BCS National Championship.

The Crusader 3

As the year goes by and many new electronics are released, people are often left wondering what new gadget is the best fit for them. In the last few months, Apple announced and released many new devices such as the iPhone 5, the iPad mini, and a new iPad, of which is the most popular of the new releases. Making the decision in regards to what gadget to purchase doesn’t get any easier when considering the fact that there are other big contenders in the phone market. The Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 4S are two of the main contenders to consider. But with so many to choose from, there is really only one ques-tion: Which device will be the right choice for you? In the past few years, Apple and Android have both competed for the top spot in the smartphone world. When the iPhone 5 was released in September 2012, the competition came to a peak. Shortly after the iP-hone 5’s release, it went on to sell 5 million units, making it one of the most successful phones of all time. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and Android’s Flagship Smartphone, are the iPhone 5’s main competition in the market. So, who wins? With the specifica-tions of the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 matching up, it is really up to the individual. If a bigger screen is more important, the Galaxy S3 will win.If compat-ibility with iTunes is more important, the iPhone is the best choice to suit your mobile device needs.

If the need for customization is greater than the need for a larger app store, the Galaxy S3 will triumphant in the decision over the iPhone 5. An-other thing to keep in mind is that Android releas-es newly updated smartphones more frequently than Apple’s yearly updates and releases. To put this into perspective, an iPhone could still be up to date for two to three years while an Android phone’s average update cycle is only a year and a half. A cheaper option is the iPhone 4S, which will save you whopping $100. The only thing that would be missing is a slightly faster processor and a longer screen. If you were interested in a tablet before now, you’re probably interested in it even more now than ever before with Apple’s recent release of an iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. But again, making the right selection is a matter of per-sonal preference. About two inches smaller than than the iPad, iPad mini does not have a retina display like it’s big brother, the iPad. While the iPad also boasts a faster processor, the iPad and iPad mini’s camera are the same quality. The most popular Android tablet, Nexus 7 gloats a 7 inch screen, competing with the iPad mini. As you can see when considering all the options, choosing a tablet is even more of a personal preference than choosing a phone.

We all go to the movies, and af-ter the credits roll we deem the movie either genius or terrible. That is just your personal opin-ion. But what about the movies the critics consider to be brilliant and worthy of special recognition and awards? According to CNN’s list of the top ten movies of 2012, the creme of the box office crop is centered around the movies which previewed near the end of 2012. The movies that the critics deemed worth the most recog-nizeable mention are Django Un-chained, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, and Skyfall.

#1 Django Unchained is a Quentin Tarantino production filled with outrageous comedy. It leaves the audience with a deeper understanding of the African American’s struggle with slavery. In this movie, the director reminds us of some of the most outrageous events in our country’s history. This movie is often referred to as a revenge on Kunta Kinte’s Roots. Zero Dark Thirty, an-other smash hit, is Hollywood’s portrayal of what truly hap-pened involving the nation’s military force’s secret assault on Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s hidden compound

in Pakistan. The story revolves around Maya, a CIA agent, who has spent her entire career focusing solely on the coun-try’s attempts to hunt, track, and terminate the nation’s big-gest threat since the attacks on the twin towers on September, 11, 2006. Zero Dark Thirty has been nominated for five Academy Awards in all.

Apple & Android Go Head to Head

The technology war between Google and Apple is nowhere near an end. In fact, Project Glass is Google’s latest weapon in the battle. Project Glass came into the spotlight when a video posted on Youtube showed viewers a unique point of view seen from the Glass user’s visual per-spective. The video showcased the re-sourcefulness of the new state-of-the-art shades. Project Glass is said to have an augmented reality head-mounted display with a smart-phone format that operates on Google’s Android software. The first Project Glass demo resembles a pair of normal eyeglasses where the lenses are

replaced by a heads-up display. This prod-uct from Google X Lab is hands free and interacts with applications and the Inter-net through natural voice commands. The first Project Glass demo resembles a pair of normal eyeglasses where the lenses are replaced by a heads-up display. While The New York Times reported that the glasses would be available to the public for about the same price as most smartphones by the end of 2012, other re-ports have stated that the glasses will not be available for purchase anytime soon.

Seniors and Juniors of the Crusader Marching Band recently embarked on a trip to the Mer-cedes Benz Superdome on February 3, 2013. The task was to bring the American flag into the end zones before the Superbowl game. Although they could not be seen on television during the broadcast of the game, the experience has left a lasting impression on all the members. The in-vitation to participate in the preparations before the game was a tremendous honor, not only

for the Crusader Marching Band, but for Brother Martin High School as a whole. And speaking of the Brother Martin Band, did you see them march during Mardi Gras? The band marched in Alla, Krewe d’Etat, and Endymion pa-rades. Over Easter break, the Crusader Marching Band traveled to Disney to march in the twilight pre-show performance for the Electrical Parade. Way to go Marching Band!

The Fat Chipmunk BASKETBALL SEASONLester Duhé III ‘13

Swoosh, dribble, dribble, bounce, bounce, brick, horn, cheers, whistle, dunk.Basketball is a team sport,

Every player on our team was tall, not short. From our great point guard who played football too,

Every team in our league was put on snooze. He is one of the most athletic kids in the state,

When it came to delivering, he never came in late. His crossover caused many ankles to break,

Shot after shot, he continued to make. Our shooting guards rotated starting each game,

But by the end of the season, everyone knew their names. They both could shoot the lights out of a ball,

When it came to winning, they were in it for the long haul.Another starting guard who played every game,

When it came to dunks, he could never be tamed. He once had a put-back dunk from a missed shot,Like a lottery machine, it was the winning slot.A Junior in his second year starting on the team,

With more offers in high school than one could dream. No one can doubt his shooting stroke,

When it came to being clutch, he did not choke. Our big man was easily the hardest worker on the team,

Collecting rebounds with a hot head of steam. He had big ups, and could dunk like Lebron,

When he went to the rim, the crowd turned on.Two unique players who came off the bench,

When it came to scoring, they did it in a cinch. One who played great defense,

and one who could shoot the three,Both together were a sight to see.

Winning many tournaments throughout the year,Going into the playoffs, they were a team to fear.

Although their season came up short,The memories of this season will forever be on the court.

With seven seniors on the team,Jabaar, Jalen, Jordan, Patrick, Aaron, Benton, and me,

Men who never say die, we will always be.Swoosh, dribble, dribble, bounce, bounce, brick, horn,

cheers, whistle, dunk.
