Continued from page 1Crufts interest was as strong as ever, with over 8 million people watching the More 4 and Channel 4 coverage over the four days. Patrick Oware and Int Ch Almanza Backseat Driver (Baxer) were wonderful Best in Show winners and of course Pete Lewin and his Newfoundlands received The Kennel Club Hero Dog award, which is supported by The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, for the amazing work they do and mental health benefits they bring to all who swim with them.

There were many winners over the four days of the show, from many different events and activities, and a full report will be included in the May Kennel Gazette.

Ukraine fundraiserFollowing the sad and devastating events in Ukraine, The Kennel Club and The Kennel Club Charitable Trust launched a Ukraine fundraising appeal at Crufts this year and are delighted to report that £228,000 has now been raised.

The money raised from the appeal will be sent to the international dog organisation, the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which is in a position to help those in need in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, through its network of kennel clubs on the ground. The FCI Solidarity for Ukraine fund will help to provide vital medicines, food and transport for the tens of thousands of animals in Ukraine, or those who have escaped with their families to neighbouring countries.

The Kennel Club and The Kennel Club Charitable Trust created a starting fund of £50,000 and donations from those

showing their dogs, breed clubs and visitors across the four-day event, increased the fund by a further £64,600, with

pledges and donations continuing to flood in since.

Mark Beazley, Chief Executive of The Kennel Club, said: “Like many others, The Kennel Club has been shocked and horrified by events in Ukraine but to see such a fantastic response to the fundraising appeal is incredibly heartening to see. We are so grateful to those dog lovers, from all across the country, who have opened their hearts to show solidarity for those people and their animals in Ukraine, who are in desperate need.”

Bill King, Chairman of The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, said: “It has been incredibly moving to see the outpouring

of support shown for people and dogs in Ukraine and we are truly honoured that The Kennel Club Charitable Trust is able to help and is in a position to collate these funds. We are so grateful to those that have donated and will be discussing with the FCI at how the money can best support those dogs and people in need.”

Anyone who wishes to contribute to the Ukraine fundraising appeal is being asked to donate via The Kennel Club’s Charitable Foundation website by visiting kennelclubcharitabletrust.org.

April Kennel GazetteContinued from page 1

In anticipation of The Kennel Club’s 150th anniversary next year, Bill Moores reveals his own favourite recollection of dog shows past in Viewpoint and members are encouraged to share their memories as part of a memory project that Ciara Farrell, Library & Collections Manager is working on. For more information email [email protected] Kennel Club members can also join its new Facebook group: Kennel Club members news from @thekennelclubuk

We feature the latest political updates including the continued progress through Parliament of the Kept Animals Bill in our news page, as well as introducing new Kennel Gazette editorial panel member Del Richards and pay our respects to the family of Peter James, former Chairman of

The Kennel Club who passed away in January.

We welcome back Alison Skipper MRCVS to discuss the importance of tradition in the dog world and that ideas of ‘good breeding’ actually change over time in health matters, and the rugged and intelligent Briard that originates from the province of

Brie in France is our breed of the month. Hear about its origins

and that Briards were used in both World Wars by the French Army as pack dogs, a breed health update and a number of articles from enthusiasts within

the breed that train and compete with their Briards

in a variety of canine activities, plus eight judges choose their three

favourite Briards they have judged in the show ring in Judges’ Choice.

‘Eye for a dog’ assessment bookings now open

The assessment will take place on Tuesday 26 April at The Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh as part of the Judges Education Programme (JEP). In order to be eligible to take part, a candidate must have been approved for at least three

breeds and judged them at CC level.

A copy of the Code of Best Practice for the assessment can be found online at bit.ly/3sqLXXH

The assessment is available to book at a cost of £30 via The Kennel

Club website at www.thekennelclub.org.uk/eyeforadog (candidates must be logged into their online account) and places will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There are 14 places available for the morning session and 14 in

the afternoon. Those judges who have previously taken the assessment and passed, need not take it again.

Enquiries in relation to the Eye for a Dog assessment should be directed to [email protected]

Following the recent announcement that the Kennel Club is to pilot a revised ‘Eye for a Dog’ assessment, bookings are now open for eligible breed show judges.

The YKC is a popular club for dog lovers aged 6 to 24, through competitions, dog training and

fun activities with their dog. Launched in 1985, the YKC aims to engage and support young people in all dog-related activities, through fun, education, care and responsibility.

Now in its 37th year, the YKC has revealed a new look across its communications and channels, including a new home for the website, with members able to see the branding first-hand at Crufts 2022. The changes follow extensive research and consultation with YKC members and their parents which was undertaken in 2019 and incorporates the feedback given to provide a combination of the two preferred designs. The new website will now be housed within The Kennel Club website, providing more visibility and will offer a mix of content and communication for both competing and non-competing members.

Further research will be commissioned over the next year as part of the next phase of the rebrand, with additional resources to follow.

Good Citizen Dog Training schemeAs with the Young Kennel Club, in line with the rebrand of many other Kennel Club product and services, and bringing together the organisation’s range of well-recognised initiatives

which make a difference for dogs, The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training scheme has an updated logo demonstrating the ongoing commitment to its core values and foundations.

The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training scheme in 2022 is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The UK’s largest dog training programme, has a strong heritage and public facing customer base, There are 1,700 clubs and over 800,000 owners and dogs having gone through the programme since its beginnings in 1992, demonstrating its value to all dog owners and the dog world in general.

The brand has evolved in a number of ways since its foundation. The scheme has developed from one initial level to four well established stages of a dog’s training development. The scheme is accessible through its large network of Kennel Club’s Registered and Listed Status dog training clubs in all areas of the UK and sees over 37,000 participants per year taking part and being tested for the award levels. 45% of these dogs are non-pedigree dogs. The scheme has also created its own examiner training qualifications

and a network of over 1,700 examiners through its comprehensive theory and

practical training initiative. The update comes following careful consultation and

crafting to reflect the essence of this popular and valued dog training programme and sets the scene very much focused on the future,

whilst celebrating the joys and benefits of responsible

dog ownership training and support for 30 years.

More information about Good Citizen Dog Training scheme and The Kennel Club’s training resources can be found at: thekennelclub.org.uk/dog-training

Young Kennel Club and Good Citizen Dog Training scheme rebrands unveiledThe Young Kennel Club (YKC) and the Good Citizen Dog Training scheme have both announced rebrands which were seen at Crufts this year.

specialist, Dr Jane Ladlow. The research, which is funded by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, is mainly focused on Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs, although it also covers the other breeds with a susceptibility to the condition.

Dr Ladlow has been working on the new genetic test since 2003 and is leading the charge in getting vets across the UK trained up. More than 40 vets are now fully qualified to conduct the test and the programme is set to continue expanding. Each month she treats 6-8 dogs with breathing difficulties and says this new test will dramatically improve the breeds’ future health.

This is fantastic news for dogs and their owners and it’s why the Trust is wholeheartedly committed to continue fundraising for this kind of innovative research. You can give to the BOAS campaign and support Dr Ladlow’s vital work here.

2020. Here, it collects scientific data, stores biological materials and houses more than 40,000 DNA samples.

Led by Dr Cathryn Mellersch, the KCGC is at the forefront of dog health and welfare, accelerating scientific research into inherited canine diseases and genetic disorders. Since its foundation, working collaboratively with dog breeders and veterinary surgeons, the team at the KCGC has developed DNA tests for 22 different inherited diseases, which benefit around 50 different breeds of dog. Research into the impact of some of these tests revealed that over a 10-year period, thanks to uptake of the tests by responsible breeders, the frequency of disease-causing genetic variants in some breeds reduced by a staggering 90%.

BOAS Research The University is also home to a ground-breaking piece of research into BOAS, led by veterinary

A NEW TEST TO IMPROVE LIFEFOR DOGS AFFECTED BY BOAS

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), is a genetic condition that can result in upper airway obstruction in dogs. Breeds such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs, tend to be those most highly affected, but as many as thirteen breeds experience the syndrome at some point in their lives.

Whilst the good news is that BOAS is easily diagnosed and a dog’s quality of life can be improved with appropriate treatment, there are even better prospects on the horizon.

The benefits of genetic testing Since 2009, the Kennel Club Charitable Trust has funded the Kennel Club Genetics Centre (KCGC) which moved to the University of Cambridge in
