Why have a Heart Town?

o Heart & circulatory diseases, such as stroke, are amongst the commonest causes of avoidable death in the UK

o Along with cancers and respiratory diseases they are the most significant drivers of health inequalities

o In 2011, the leading cause of avoidable deaths was heart disease in males and lung cancer in females

o 43,000 people die prematurely in UK from heart and circulatory diseases

• 23% of premature deaths in men

• 14% premature deaths in women

o Many of the modifiable risk factors help prevent other health conditions: e.g. smoking, diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption

Heart Town starts where the NHS Health Check finishes…points for discussion

o What should we be doing to raise awareness of heart and circulatory diseases in Croydon communities?

o How should we provide education, advice and support to prevent heart and circulatory diseases in Croydon?

o Motivational interviewing – right time, right place/behaviour change.
