Show Notice

Ladies; Due to the Corona Virus, the

board has decided to postpone our 2021 Quilt Show. We are currently

looking at February or March of 2022. Our Quilt Show is our BIG fundraiser. At this point, we can not be sure

that a 2021 show would give us the success that we need to financially survive. I will

keep you all informed along the way. Please contact me if

you have any questions .

Dues Are Over Due

Speaking of our guild’s financial situation, membership dues are over due .!.!.

Download the membership form from the guild’s

website, fill it out and mail the form and your check to Val Davis. If you have any

trouble or questions, Val is waiting to hear from

you .!.!. Easy Peasy

My Dear Friends……..

Yesterday morning’s headline in The Bee

(June 24th) about Stanislaus County being a

Covid-19 hot spot was not the news I

wanted to see. I think that we were hoping

that we were headed toward our lives

getting back to what we like to think of as

normal. I find it very confusing to read all

the pros and cons of wearing face masks

when we are out and about. If I am in an

area where people are wearing masks, I put

mine on. I am aware that I, and many of you

also, fall into that High Risk category.

However, today’s front page (June 25th) was

more pleasing. It showed a photo of our

barn with the SAVE WOOD COLONY sign on

it. Our family has resided in this very spot

for 117 years, with 6 generations, and we

really do not want to become part of the

City of Modesto. We like things the way

they are.

I was able to attend the recent memorial

service for our CCQ member and friend

Marilee Heaston who passed away in

March. We all observed social distancing.

It was a lovely service with her family and

many friends there to honor her. She will

be missed by our group and Turlock Quilt

Guild too.

There is no word about when we will be

allowed to meet again. So I will continue

to stay at home where I feel safe. Luckily,

I have many sewing projects to satisfy my

creative juices. Today I will prepare block

number 9 of my appliqué quilt. I am up to

date with the Mystery Quilt steps and my

Bucket List challenge is all sketched and

the fabric for it in a bin ready to go. I

received some new Clover Black Gold

needles yesterday from Amazon to try

out. I will grab my trusty thimble and get

to stitching.

Be smart and stay safe, my dear friends.

A Little Message

From Our

Vice-Presidents … I hope all of you are doing well and staying healthy. I also hope that you are getting a lot of UFO’s or WIP’s done in the last few months.

I (Cory) have been staying busy with the Quilting Studio and helping my daughter. Between my daughter’s dental assistant online school and her 7-year-old son’s online schooling, she has her hands full.

I have started the “Virtual Coffee Breaks” a couple of Saturday’s a month. They have been fun. It has been good to see one another and chat about what we have been doing and accomplishing in our time at home. I got the idea from Geri Patterson-Kutras. She and Mel Beach are doing “Virtual Coffee Breaks” for EBHQ. The next one is scheduled for July 11 at 10:00 am. Please call me at 209-298-0659 or email me at [email protected] if you need help learning how to log into Zoom.

Cory Murphy and Kathy Sandner

Co-VP’s

Life, lately, seems to be at a standstill. But it hasn't! I am very happy to announce that Sharon Iyer has been awarded with the Terry Kendrick Scholarship.

Congratulations Sharon!!! This scholarship is to encourage quilters from our membership to try a 5 day workshop. This will give Sharon $600 towards the tuition of a class of her choosing. This could be Empty Spools at Asilomar, or it could be a class at Art Tahoe, or anywhere else they are holding a 5 day workshop.

Why to we encourage this? A one day class will get you started in a technique and before you know it the class is over and sometimes you feel like you were in a whirlwind and it was just too fast. The project often does not get completed ever as the class seemed to be over before you know it.

So a 5 day class gives you a chance to really get more in depth into your chosen subject. It gives you a chance to think about things before you go to class again next morning and try to work out some challenges. I can already hear some people laughing that you don't finish an intricate art quilt or complicated pieced quilt top in those 5 days either, but you really did have a longer chance to get into the "meat" of the class and get a better understanding of your project. And a better chance of completing your project.

So........ how can you become a possible recipient of such a scholarship? There are a few "rules" to this.

1. You have to be a member of CCQ for at least 2 years. 2. You must fill out an application and list everything you have ever done for the

guild. There will be about 3 judges who see the applications (NO names, so they are evaluated blindly). The judges give points for all your activities and then the applicant with the most points has an opportunity.

So, if you are interested in this scholarship, I recommend that you take on jobs at the guild, give a short subject of an idea or technique you have learned. Five day classes are great! See you all one of these days. Sharon now has to start looking at next year to see what she would like to try. Educationingly Yours, Ursula Sylvan

Clue #3: PIECING BITS:

It’s time in our magical mystery tour to start sewing! We’re going to make a bazillion Half Square Triangles …

Draw a diagonal line on the backs of all (48) Light Background 5 ½” squares.

With Right Sides Together (RST), sew a ¼” seam on either side of the drawn lines (Diagram 3a):

(24) of the Light Background 5 ½” squares to all of the Medium-Light Background 5 ½” squares

(12) of the Light Background 5 ½” squares and the (12) Medium 5 ½” squares.

(12) of the Light Background 5 ½” squares and the (12) Medium -Dark 5 ½” squares

Diagram 3a

Cut along the drawn lines (Diagram 3b) and press toward the darker fabric.

Square all the Half Square Triangle (HST) blocks to 5” x 5” (Diagram 3c). (They will finish at 4 ½” x 4 ½”)
