The Crossroads Care schemes began in 1975 as a direct result of the television soap of the same name. There was a character in the television programme called Sandy. He was a wheelchair user and was cared for by Megan. ITV received many leers from carers saying that the portrayal of the character and the role of his carer were not always accurate, although they were pleased that a disabled person was being featured on the programme. To their credit, the television producon team donated £10,000 to do research into how many carers there were, and what they needed to help their situaon. It took only a few weeks for the research project to realise that amongst the support carers needed was respite care in their homes. At that me, the only respite carers could get was if their loved ones went to hospital. The research project was scrapped and the first Crossroads scheme began. Our own Crossroads Care scheme was formed in 1996 in the Forest of Dean and we have been supporng carers in Herefordshire since 2008. We are a registered charity and not-for-profit care agency regulated by the Care Quality Commission. In 2015 we are delighted to be working with Herefordshire Council to be offering carers wellbeing service throughout the county. In 2012 the Carers Trust was formed - a unique network of 116 independent carers centres (in Herefordshire—Herefordshire Carers Support) 55 Crossroads Care schemes and 99 young carers services. The charitable side of the Yeleni Support Centre has been set up to provide up to 9 free complementary therapy sessions to anyone with cancer or chronic illness in Herefordshire. These free sessions are also combined with ongoing support through groups and workshops.
Yeleni offer the opportunity to just simply pop in to the Centre and have a cup of tea and a chat or to come and sit somewhere quiet such as their meditation room or garden and have the chance to borrow books from the library.
Yeleni can offer free / reduced cost therapies to those who are in a caring role.
