Life• Born in London England June 17th

1832- died in England April 14th 1919• He had many kids• He even went to Oxford and obtained

Chemical post at Chester

Meteorologist• In 1854 he was a Superintendent of the

Meteorological Department of Radcliffe Astronomical Observatory in the College of Oxford

Thallium

• Atomic Number 81•Melting point 5770K• Boiling point 17460K• At room temperature it is solid

Radiometer• Transferred light into motion pictures• In return created a basis for the television

Spiritualism

• In 1860 he became interested in spiritualism which affected the way he looked at science• Crooke looked into spiritualism to try

to prove psychic powers real• He ended up loosing respect for

being a scientist

Presidency• In 1890 he was elected to become

president of the electrical engineers• In 1897 he was elected President of

the Society for Psychical Research• He became the Honorary Secretary

in 1900 -1912.

His Wife• Ellen Humphrey• Met Crookes at age 19• Married 40 years

Radioactivity• Crookes was interested in the field of

radioactivity.• After researching uranium for several

years he invented an instrument made to detect alpha-rays called a spinthariscope, which means "spark-viewer."
