• Tip 1: For a filling, high-protein salad, add skinless chickenor turkey. Or top with crab meat, tuna, salmon or low-fat cottage cheese. Garbanzo and kidney beans are another protein-rich option. • Tip 2: Prevent accidents by keeping stair-cases in your home clutter-free and carpeted, with carpet tacked down firmly. Safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs can keep little ones safe. • Tip 3: If you’re trying to ditch a bad habit, such as smoking or heavy drinking, avoid joining friends who’ll be taking part in that activity. Connect with folks who don’t share the habit you’re trying to kick.• Tip 4: If you must drive while exhausted, travel with apassenger. Ask him or her to sit in the front seat and stay awake. • Tip 5: Take your time in the gym and complete the full range of motion for every exercise you do to help prevent injury.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
We want to thank our loyal customers for their patronage throughout the many years.
Students as young as kindergarteners chant “COL-LEGE” when their teacher shouted, “Where are you go-ing after high school?” Those are the words resonating throughout the hallways at Maury City Elementary School where the staff is gearing kids towards college with their “No Excuses University.” No Excuses University is a network of schools cen-tered on a culture of universal achievement. NEU is the idea that all students deserve to be educated in a way that prepares them for college if they choose to attend. No Excuses! Those are the words that decorate the entrance of the school and the walls of the classrooms. “No excuses” has a lot of meaning around the school, es-pecially with teachers. There’s no excuse for the teachers not to prepare their students for college. “We, the school, have the opportunity to make college a reality for our stu-dents,” said principal, Melissa Glenn. “It is the responsi-bility of the staff to develop the systems necessary to help students achieve that dream.” TheschoolfirststartedworkingtowardsbecomingaNo Excuses University last summer when a group of teach-ers traveled to Dallas for a NEU institute that provided them with the resources needed to deliver on the commit-ment of improving academic achievement of all students
and ensuring that they are college ready. A school cannot simply call themselves a NEU. Schools interested in becoming one must apply and not only show that they are creating a college type atmosphere but also demonstrate that they have implemented proven systems to increase student achievement. Here’s the good news. MCES applied and was recently accepted! There are only 148 schools nationwide who can call themselves a NEU. Maury City is only the second school in Tennessee to be a part of this network.
Collegebanners,flags,andpennantsadorntheclassroomsandhall-ways. Each of the classrooms has adopted a college. The students learn aboutthatcollege, themascots, thefightsongs, andwheretheyarelocated.Several classes have already had the opportunity to visit the University of Tennessee at Martin and Bethel University. More college campus visits are planned in the upcoming months. On Mondays, students wear shirts stating College is in our future…No excuses! Every Friday, students and staff wear college t-shirts. It’s all about creating the culture of college readiness from the time students enter kindergarten. You can view a You Tube video to see this awesome program in place at MCES by following this link on the internet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFtsR6SOmc4 Maury City Elementary School students are college bound. At lunch, the students had a special visitor to come and were served strawberry-banana smoothies! At the end of the day, all students were giv-en milk mustache stickers and other goodies madepossiblebytheOfficeofCoordinatedSchool Health and our Cafeteria. On October 26, 9th and 10th grade students enrolled in Physical Educa-tion and Wellness classes at Crockett County High School, had the opportunity to participate in a nationally recognized drug prevention program. Coordinated School Health Director, Kelsie Henning, partnered with Drug Free Tennessee/Foundation for a Drug Free World representative, Anne Vallieres, to provide a seminar to teach students about the “facts they need to know” and how danger-ous drugs are to individuals, their families and the community. Students had the opportunity to hear a personal testimony from Jesse McIntyre on how drug use almost ruined his live. Mr. McIntyre detailed how drug use/abuse caused him to loose his family, thousands of dollars, job and almost cost him his life. CrockettCo.SchoolsOfficeofCoordinatedSchoolHealthwould like tothank Drug Free Tennessee, Mr. Steve Ramsey, and Coaches: Michael Wicker-sham, Kaitlyn Dudley and Kevin Ward for allowing us to provide this program for our students.

As I write this month’s publisher’s note, I should say that I enjoy the month of December and always have. It is one of my favorite times of the year. As the month begins the anticipation of Christmas approaching brings a tremendous amount of joy to both me and my family. In December, I often think of my childhood Christmases. They were lled with traditions, family time and remembering the true meaning of Christmas. The weeks leading up to Christmas were lled with Sunday gatherings around the Advent wreath at church. The Christmas program for the children of all ages was also a favorite of mine. I enjoyed playing a character in our play each year as well. I can also remember as a child our church gathering one weekend in December to read the whole Bible. We would all take shifts the entire weekend reading chapter after chapter until we nished. My Dad played the guitar while my older brother would play the piano. My mom’s voice lled the air singing ‘Holy Night’. These indeed were special times.
A week before Christmas, my dad would go searching for the best live Christmas tree. They always smelled so good, just like a forest. My favorite part of the tree was the tinsels, colored lights, and the angel on top. Each year we kids would take turns placing the angel on top. On Christmas our family would gather together and open gifts. My parents would also remind us children that Christmas is about Christ, the greatest gift ever known to mankind. I am so thankful that my parents taught us the true meaning of Christmas. If I could say one thing to you this season of Christmas it would be that Christ should be celebrated 365 days a year. God gave us the most precious gift, the Christ Child. Have a safe and joyful Holiday season.
Merry Christmas from my family to yours.

Funds from the Health Rocks Grant provided t-shirts for every student enrolled at CCMS, as well as water bottles, prizes, food and etc. The purpose of the event was to increase students’ knowledge of tobacco/drug/alcohol prevention, healthy eating and physical activity. LeBonhuer Community Health and Wellbeing representatives provided the “Drums Alive” Activity that gave students a unique and innovative way to utilize laundry baskets, exercise balls, drum sticks and music to increase physical activity. The CCHS HOSA students provided a booth focus-ing on health education and recruiting students interested in their club. Other booths included, a fresh fruits, vegetables and snacks tasting provided by CCS School Nutrition, teacher “Stress Free Zone” with health snacks and health screenings, face painting, sugar facts, tobacco prevention, importance of drinking water, dance dance revolution and more. The planning committee would like to thank Volunteer State Health Plan Representative Sylvia Stamper for providing lunch bags and water bottles for all students and staff, the CCMS Cafeteria Staff, UT Extension, CCMS Administration, HOSA Students and Teachers, Ms. Beth Choat’s LPN students from the Higher Ed. Getting Through The Holidays
By: Stephen R. Sutton The conversation goes like this “well, the holiday season is here and it just reminds me of…”.
No doubt, the holidays bring sweet memories of our loved ones as well as a hurtful longing to be
with them once again. To ask one last question…to spend 5 more minutes…oh, what we would
give for just that one moment! This time of the year, which is supposed to be joyful, is painful
your memory. May God bless you as you continue through the cycle of grief and help all of those who are
hurting during this Holiday Season.
Because of Calvary, Stephen R. Sutton

United Healthcare graciously agreed to be our corporate underwriter by providing funding to the Coordinated School Health programs across the state. Scott Bowers, CEO for United Healthcare and Rebecca Johns-Wommack, Executive Director of the Tennessee Coordinated School Health Department helped present awards to the 57 systems that successfully completed this challenge. “WeareutterlyimpressedwiththepartnershipofTheTennesseeSchoolBoardAssociationandtheStateDepartmentofEducation–OfficeofCoor-dinated School Health who have come together to teach our children the important connection between healthy behaviors and their academic success. To help advance this good work, we whole heartedly support the Tennessee Healthier School’s Challenge program and we commend those that have taken the time to help make a difference in the health and well-being of our children,” said Scott A. Bowers, plan president with United Healthcare Community Plan. The Healthier Schools Challenge was a voluntary, statewide initiative recognizing school systems for their participation in merging health with academics to create student success. This initiative was designed to motivate school board members, school administrators, faculty, staff, parents and students to create healthier school environments, encourage adoption of healthy behaviors and promote the connection between health and academic success. The Healthier Schools Challenge includes twelve possible criteria to complete. There were 57 systems that completed at least 8 out of the 12 criteria. Congratulations to Bells City School CSH Director, Brooke Parkey, for receiving the Silver Award and Crockett County Schools CSH Director, Kelsie D. Henning for receiving the Bronze Award

by Will Norrid When we think back to memories of childhood, we recall with pleasant fondness the days of early December leading up to Christmas. The ideaofreindeerprancingontherooftopsandjollyoldSt.Nicholasfillingourstockingswithcandybroughtjoytotheheartsofeverychild.Christmaswas also a time for family and friends gathering together and remembering the passing of the year and plan for new adventures in the year to come. Family from far and near would gather together to eat and tell the old stories that only they knew about each other. No books would ever contain these stories, but they would be passed down generation to generation, parent to child, on and on. Truly in families we see the spirit of Christmas. Formanyofus, aspeopleoffaith,Christmasisalsoatimetorememberthegreatestgiftevergiven,JesusChristcomingintheflesh.Thoughthe New Testament gives no actual date of his birth, people through the centuries have come to mark Christmas as a time of remembering the Christ Child coming into the world. While Santa Claus may be a product of 19th century economic interests, the message of Jesus has echoed down through history steering men and women to nobler, better lives. I can remember fondly visiting at the churches bedecked with holly and poinsettias listening to the choirs sing the glorious songs of the season. For just a moment the world moved a little slower, people were a little kinder and life was a little less cold and dreary. Gone were the temporary struggles of the moment and our hearts were drawn back to the simple messages of the Babe of Bethlehem. Truly in the heart of Jesus we see the spirit of Christmas. Loving God and loving our neighbors came to the forefront of our minds during this special season. Many families and churches gave gener-ous support to the less fortunate during the bleak winter months surrounding Christmas. I was privileged to have some small role in the Christmas for Kids project of Alamo City School for several years. Families and churches sponsored children and bought for them a few essential items as well asawishortwo.Whatajoyitwastoseethefacesofthoseyoungpeoplelightupwithanewbicycle,Barbieoractionfigure.Trulyintheheartsofchildren we see the spirit of Christmas. Christmas is more than a holiday: it is a state of the heart. It is the belief that it is more blessed to give than to receive. It is the belief that miracles are possible. It is the belief that spring again will come despite the hardships of winter. Ultimately, it is the belief that good will triumph over evil and that, in the darkest of hours, we are not alone.

Friendship Elementary celebrated the 10th year of Red Ribbon Week this year with the theme “I’m Voting for My Future!” We had different dress-up days such as Cavalier Day, college day and Dress for Success Day. Here at Friendship Elementary, we want our students to know they can graduate high school, go on to college and then start the career of their choice. The way they can do that is by staying focused on school work and activities and staying drug and alcohol free! We also had our annual poster contest sponsored by the Bank of Friendship. The posters were judged Friday by Lisa Myrick from the Bank of Friendship and Mrs. Mary Marvin. Winners from kindergarten through 2nd grade were 1st place – Riley Robertson, 2nd place – Brilee Blalock and 3rd place – Carson Pruitt. Winners from 3rd through 5th were 1st place – Journey Estes, 2nd place – Ale Carrillo, and 3rd place – Dalton Smothers. Most Creative was awarded to Eliza-beth Hunt and Best Slogan was Tehya Triplett. Students and staff look forward to this encouraging week every year. We are grateful for the parents and community who put so much time and effort into our students by teaching them that a drug free life is the best life to pursue.

Our parents (Morris and Bootsie Reasons) were married 65 years ago (December 6, 1947). Harry Truman was President. The average cost of a new home was $6600. You could get a new car for $1,300, and gasoline for that new car cost 15 cents/gallon. A postage stamp was 3 cents. Moments with a MinisterThe Best Gift Of All
It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year! When families gather together and exchange gifts purchased or made for one another. Most of the time, some type of electronic gadget tops my wish list every year. The iPhone 5, the iPad mini, MacBook, Galaxy Note, on and on it goes for other gadget lovers as well. I don’t need these things, but I do love them. I hate to admit it, but I would be lost in many ways without my iPhone. You do have something on your list, right? Something you’re really hoping you’ll get? All this stuff is super nice, of course, but we all recognize it is not anywhere close to being what’s most important. I received the best and greatest gift 17 years ago. It was a Wednesday night as I walked to the front of a little church building and gave my life to God (Nance church of Christ outside of Alamo). I was baptized into Christ to have my sins forgiven (Gal 3:26-27, Rom. 6:3-4). I was then saved and added to the church by God Himself (Acts 2:41). Not perfect now, just forgiven. Itwastrulyapricelessgift.GoddefinitelyknewwhatIneeded. As we conclude Thanksgiving and anxiously anticipate Christmas, let’s continue to focus on what God did for us in Christ. Let’s do what Paul urges: May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who hasqualifiedyoutoshareintheinheritanceofthesaintsinlight.Hehasdeliveredusfromthedomainofdarknessandtransferredustothekingdomofhis beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:11-14). WearesothankfulforHimbecauseHehasqualifiedus“toshareintheinheritanceofthesaintsinthelight”. Howsweetisthat?Goddoesnotcallthequalified…hequalifiesthecalled! IfyouareaChristian, thenyouhavebeenqualifiedfortheinheritanceofaneternitywithChrist!Myfriends, that’sawholelotbetterthanwinningthe lottery! He can deliver you from darkness and place you in His kingdom! He will redeem, forgive, and save you! Sure, we are thankful for the physical food God has given to us, thankful for our families, time, and blessings. But, we do not chase after blessings...we chase after God and the blessings will come! However, most importantly, we are just overwhelmed by God’s choosing to rescue us from our rebellion against Him and giving us the gift of salva-tion. Whatever you might get this holiday season – even if it’s bought at an unbelievable discount on Black Friday – it can not begin to compare to what you can have in Jesus Christ.

Two local librarians, Sarah Conley, librarian at Alamo City School, and Carol Wirwa, librarian at Crockett County Middle School, recently shared a presentation promoting the “Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation” at the Tennessee Association of School Librarians Conference in Murfreesboro, Ten-nessee. The conference is held annually, featuring informational sessions on the latest trends in library media, as well as featured award-winning authors. This year’s conference welcomed 435 library media specialists from across the state. Both Conley and Wirwa felt blessed to share how the Books from Birth Foundation and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library have helped prepare our county’s children for school readiness by ensuring they receive 60 books by the ageoffive, atnocosttothefamilyregardlessofincome.Oneofthehighlightsof the presentation was the goal to fully endow Crockett County Imagination Library to ensure these books for our children.
