Kazun

Kažun is a small house – shelter, made of stone, and very common for the fields of Istria. They were used as a shelter, for keeping tools and to rest during work in the fields. Today they are a symbol of Istria, so you can see many newly built Kažuns all over the peninsula. It is interesting to note that in the oldest British National Park District, (A515 between Buxton and Ashbourne) Kažun was built as a symbol of Croatian entrance to the European Union

Kazun is also very common on the souvenirs

Drywall technique was used for construction, which means the stones were put together without any adhesive. The roof had a thin stone blocks which were formed in a concentric shape close to the top. Besides circular Kažuns, there are many different shapes

There were around 10000-

20000 Kažuns in the history, but today around

5000 remained, and 2000-3000 are located in Vodnjan area

The biggest and most notable are “Twin Kažuns” in village Batvači

next to Vodnjan. First one is 4,30m high with a radius of 4 m. Other is

somewhat smaller

Nijemo-kolo

Nijemo is a silent dance originating from the Dalmatian hinterland in southern Croatia. In 2011 it was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists

The Nijemo Kolo is performed by a group forming a closed circle with the men leading their female partners in quick, fortuitous steps which are often vigorous and daunting

The most noticeable aspect

of the dance is that it performed entirely without

music

Today, Nijemo Kolo continues to be performed by local village groups and can be seen in festivals, competitions, fairs, church celebrations, and weddings

Grotulja is a sort of necklace made out of walnuts lined on string. Grotulja is a symbol of area around Trilj town in Croatia. Traditionally it was given by a young man to a girl on a feast of Saint Michael (patron saint of Trilj) as a symbol of affection or even as symbol of marriage proposal

National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia LADO was founded in 1949 in Zagreb, SR Croatia,SFRY as a professional national ensemble. LADO represents the rich and diverse regional musical and choreographic traditions of Croatia. It has been called Croatia's most successful "cultural export product".

The tradition of gingerbread making appeared in certain European monasteries during the Middle Ages and came to Croatia where it became a craft.

The gingerbread heart is the most common motif, and is frequently prepared for marriages, decorated with the newlyweds’ names and wedding date. Licitars are colorfully decorated biscuits made of sweet honey dough that are part of Croatia's cultural heritage and a traditional symbol of Zagreb

In modern times Licitars are traditional Croatian souvenirs (and can be found in all Croatian airports and in many tourist gift shops), Christmas tree decorations, wedding favours for guests, business gifts, many other ornamental purposes, and is still given as a way of showing your affection to the ones you love
