New enrolment policy

The NSW Department of Education has released a new enrolment policy that will come into effect on Day 1 of Term 4 2019. The key impact of this policy is around the enrolment caps for all schools across NSW. At Newington Public School we are over our enrolment cap (this is calculated on the number of permanent classrooms) which under this policy means that the school is not in a position to accept any non-local enrol-ments. This will impact some current families that were within the intake area when first enrolled, but have since moved and are outside the intake area. According to the new policy the siblings of these students who are not currently enrolled are now considered non-local.

Exception - if a child enrolling for Kindergarten is living within the Wentworth Point PS intake area and has a sibling already attending Newington PS the family will have a choice of which school to enrol the kindergarten student. This is due to the Department’s adjustment in the school’s local enrolment intake area when Went-worth Point PS opened.

As outlined in the policy, non-local Kindergarten enrolments for siblings submitted by the end of Term 3 2019 will not be affected. I encourage all parents, particularly those with younger children (yet to start school) to become familiar with the policy and the impact this may have on future enrolments. A par-ent fact sheet and further information can be sought from the school's website https://newington-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

Kindergarten Enrolment 2020

If you are yet to lodge your enrolment application for a child starting kindergarten in 2020 or you know someone in our enrolment boundary who has a child for kindergarten next year and are yet to submit an enrolment form, could you please do so before the end of Term 3. We need to finalise arrangements for Kinder Orientation.

SASS Recognition Week

Each year a week is set aside to recognise the work of school administration and support staff (SASS). SAS staff work in the school office, in classrooms and the library and maintain and care for our school grounds and buildings. They are often the ones who tend to students when they are unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. I would like to acknowledge all our SAS staff for the valuable work you perform and your contribution to supporting great teaching and learning outcomes at Newington. So a big thank you to our Admin team– Josie, Debbie, Carolyn, Judy, Teresa, Maria and Michelle; our groundsman- Paul; and our Learning and Support Officers Pat, Jo, Vida, Donna, Saira and Shida for all that they do to assist the students, staff and community.

Drop off and pick up

Dropping off and picking up students before and after school is an issue which has been addressed on a num-ber of occasions in the past, but remains of high concern. With the safety and security of your children our top priority I remind parents that double parking anywhere is not only against the law, but more particularly, ex-tremely dangerous within a school zone. It is imperative that road rules are followed regardless of how incon-venient this can be at times. Parents are also asked to ensure that at no time do they park across, or partially block, the driveways of private homes of our neighbours. This practice is disrespectful and results in much in-convenience, frustration and time wasting for all involved. It is a courtesy I am sure you would all expect extend-ed to your own home. Your cooperation in these matters would be greatly appreciated.

School Statement payments for Term 3—Please pay now! Term 3 payments (optional sports activities, excursions, incursions - sports, FLIP dance, camps etc) need to be finalised ASAP as we must have all accounts up to date as we move closer to the end of term. If you require assistance with payments please call the Office to arrange to speak with me.

2021 Selective High School (Current Year 5)

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be with-

out sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented

students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised

ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High

School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement

Test will be held on Thursday 12 March 2020.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to

apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from mid-September 2018 at https:// educa-tion.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The application website opens at that link on 8 October 2019 and closes on 11 November 2019. You must apply before the closing date. Late applications will not be accepted.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public li-

brary. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assis-

tance after 8 October 2019. You must submit only ONE application for each student.

A parent information session will be held prior to the closing date to inform parents of the assessment pro-

cesses behind school based scores and assist with decision making. Parents will be invited closer to the

date, but it is advisable to attend to ensure you have accurate and up to date information regarding the

selective high school application and selection process. All Year 5 students need to hand in the school

note which is due to the administration office by Friday 13 September; to indicate YES they’re ap-

plying, or NO they are not applying.

Maths Olympiad

The Maths Olympiad competition is nearing the end of the program, with only 1 more competition round to go. The students have done an amazing job so far, as reflected in the many that have stayed dedicated to their homework: Raha, Xavier, Ivy, Huzaifa, Joseph, Bryant, Natalie, Ashley, Daniel, Hannah, Alexandra, Jo-lina, Lee Sheen, Gilbert and Adele. With such fantastic mindsets and a real talent for complex problem solving, the students continue to wow us also with their perfect scores (5/5), with the last round being earned by: Ethan, Daniel, Wyatt, Tony, Shirley, Aaron, Bryant, Justin, Xavier, Ivy, Eugene, Henry and Han. Congratu-lations to all so far, and we can’t wait to see how all our team members and both teams across all 5 competi-tions. The last Maths Olympiad competition for 2019 will be held Week 8.

SPOTLIGHT ON

LITERACY & NUMERACY

L3 Program

Kindergarten L3 Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) is a classroom-based early intervention for Kinder-garten students in their first year of school. The content of the intervention provides early and meticulous instructional opportunities that have positive influences on literacy growth for students. It aims to reduce the gap between children who are at risk literacy learners and those who are achieving expected outcomes.

Kindergarten students engage in a choice of quality learning activities daily while 3 students are explicitly taught to read by the teacher. The activities include reading, writing, computer use and maths.

All students have a ‘turn’ with the teacher to ‘show’ their skills! All students are making very good progress and enjoy picking up a book to enjoy or find out some information from.

Kindergarten has been busy writing sentences using the whiteboards. They first think of a sentence to write and then practise writing the sentence on the whiteboards inde-pendently. The children have been writing many sentences about farm animals this term.

Year 1 L3+1 Language, Learning and Literacy Stage One (L3+1) is a teacher professional learning program that aims to devel-op deep understandings of how to plan and implement a systematic literacy program that meets the needs of all students. The L3 Stage 1 Program is designed to develop deep understandings in teachers through sustained Pro-fessional Learning. It is not a step by step prescribed pro-gram. It asks teachers to think critically and reflect on their teaching practices in order to “teach forward.” It is aimed at the maintenance and growth of the gains of students who have received explicit, systematic, balanced and integrated literacy teaching in the L3K classroom. All teachers in year 1 have been trained in L3+1 and im-plement daily in their classrooms.

During Literacy centres students are actively engaged in independent tasks across a variety of learning areas. 1G are currently colour coding maps of the school as part of their geography unit, skip counting with a spin and skip game

and investigating facts about the Tasmanian devil.

K-2 EXCURSIONS!

Year 2 Excursion to Ku-rin-gai Wildflower Garden

Chirp! Crunch! Slither!

These are just some of the sounds 2C heard while walking through the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Gar-den. On Friday 9

August Year 2 went on an excursion to visit the wild life and learn about the life of

reptiles and plants. On the excursion, our Ranger Anna, took us on 3 exciting and informative jour-neys. On one journey we got to meet a blue tongue lizard and a long-necked turtle. We also touched the prickly spikes of an echidna. The next journey we took a bush walk and came across rare types of mini beats including a strawberry lady bug and a wolf spider! We also saw how you can turn wat-tle leaves into soap. That’s right, SOAP! The Indigenous Australians use this to help sooth insect bites and to keep clean. We also collected sea pods on our bush walk. Our last journey was located high above Ku-ring-gai at top of the bush walk we visited a fern house. Here we learnt about how to be sustainable and look after plants and wildlife. We also played a nature bingo game where we had to locate many things in the environment like a bee hive, compost bin, ducks, worm bin and a pond. 2C had a wonderful learning about mini-bests, nature, wildlife and plants. We hope you all get a chance to visit Kur-rin-gai National Park.

School travel application endorsements

Endorsed a student travel application in error?

Administrators occasionally contact us to advise that they have endorsed an application in error. A common error we have seen is parents entering their name or date of birth, instead of their child. These may be due to an auto-fill function on a device or just human error. Unfortunately, an endorsement cannot be undone within the portal, so we ask that you carefully check each student’s details before endorsing.

If an error is made it would be appreciated if you could advise our SSTS team as soon as possible so the application can be intercepted before an Opal card or travel pass is issued. In any case, the parent/guardian or student will need to submit a new application with the correct information. This will then come back to the school to endorse. To contact us about an endorsement error, please go to: https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback and select feedback about ‘school student transport scheme’ and then select ‘application updates’.
