James A. Newton, MD, FACP, FIDSAInfectious Disease Specialist, Washington Regional Medical Center

Dr. Newton has been the director of antibiotic stewardship for more than six years at a 425-bed community hospital in Northwest Arkansas. He is very involved with infection control at the local and state level. He serves as chairman of the Arkansas Department of Health’s

antibiotic stewardship subcommittee. Dr. Newton was in private practice for 12 years in Southeast Virginia specializing in infectious diseases. He practiced for 13 years prior to serving as an infectious disease physician with the U.S. Navy. Dr. Newton attended the University of Arkansas double-majoring in chemistry and zoology with an honors degree in biochemistry. He graduated from UAMS in 1987, completing his internal medicine residency at the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va. He completed an infectious diseases fellowship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

Marsha Crader, PharmDAssociate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, UAMS College of Pharmacy

In addition to teaching pharmacy practice at UAMS College of Pharmacy, Dr. Crader is the lead antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. Her work includes improving health care processes and

provider knowledge to result in a positive impact on patient outcomes in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Crader is involved at the state level as a member of the Arkansas Department of Health’s antimicrobial stewardship subcommittee and is the chair of the Arkansas Association of Health-System Pharmacists’ Antimicrobial Stewardship Task Force.

Trish Gould, RNInfection Preventionist,CHI St. Vincent Hospital Hot Springs

Ms. Gould is an infection preventionist at CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Grand Canyon University and has been a nurse for more than 24 years. She is board certified in infection prevention and control and has

worked in infection prevention for 16 years. Ms. Gould is past president of the Arkansas APIC chapter and currently serves on the Arkansas Department of Health HAI advisory committee and the antibiotic resistance stewardship subcommittee.

Mandy Langston, PharmDPharmacy Director, Stone County Medical Center

Dr. Langston has been the pharmacy director at Stone County Medical Center (SCMC) since graduating with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UAMS in 2008. SCMC is a critical access hospital in Mountain View, part of White River Health System. She is also a pharmacy billing and clinical

informatics analyst for the White River Medical Center pharmacy. Dr. Langston is a member of the Arkansas Pharmacist Association and a UAMS Pharmacy School preceptor. She is ACLS and BLS certified. Recently, she was featured on Kaiser Health News and NPR radio to advocate for fair drug pricing for critical access hospitals.

Christian John Lillis is executive director of the Peggy Lillis Foundation (PLF), a disease awareness and patient safety organization. The organization was co-founded with his brother, Liam, following the death of their mother from a clostridium difficile (C. diff) infection in 2010. PLF envisions a world where C. diff is rare, treatable and survivable. In pursuit of its

vision, PLF is building a nationwide C. diff awareness movement to educate the public, empower advocates and shape policy.

As head of PLF, Christian has led three national convenings of C. diff advocates,

built a 40-person volunteer Advocates Council, and produced the first-ever public service announcement on C. diff infection. He is a member of the technical expert panel for AHRQ’s Safety Program for Antibiotic Stewardship and CMS’ Partnership for Patients’ Patient and Family Advisory Council. In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognized PLF’s work with its Excellence in Partnership award for domestic advocates and organizations.

Christian has presented to state hospital associations, quality improvement organizations, health care systems and industry leaders, including Mount Sinai Health, National Quality Forum and the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. Christian’s writings have appeared in the Baltimore Sun, Cleveland Plain Dealer and the CDC’s Safer Healthcare Blog. PLF’s work has been featured in Consumer Reports, USA Today and Reuters. Peggy’s story was also featured in Dr. Martin Blaser’s 2014 book, “Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues.”
