4 VOLO’S LOST NOTEBOOK

Chapter 1 Succubi & Incubi: Deadly and DeceptiveTo scholars brave enough or foolish enough to study the lower planes, few threats are so terrifying, yet alluring, as the lustful fiends known as the succubus and the incubus. These dangerous creatures can be reliably located throughout the lower planes. They often work as spies, advisors, and consorts to devils, demons, yugoloths, night hags, rakshasas, and other evil entities. These beautiful corruptors are best known for tempting mortal souls to be tainted by true evil, and are encountered on the material plane more often than other fiends. When approaching mortals, a succubus or an incubus typically adopts the disguise of a devilishly-attractive and charming humanoid. These hedonistic monsters are master manipulators, capable and effective at presenting self-obsessed indulgence in an irresistible light. Those who are unable to resist their own darkest temptations will inevitably forfeit their souls to the lower planes.

Shapeshifting SeducersBy presenting themselves as charming and desirable humanoids, succubi and incubi bewitch mortals, afflicting them with uncontrollable lust, deadly desires, and terrible temptation. The succubus is said to appear in the form of an irresistibly beautiful women, often leaving little to the imagination. In a similar fashion, an incubus chooses male forms that are magnetic and inviting to all but the most chaste heroes. Although they sometimes appear as male and female specimens, any succubus can become an incubus and any incubus a succubus. Mortal societies definition’s of gender and sexuality are nearly meaningless to these fiends, however some do have a preference for a form whose shape they find most comfortable. When revealing their true-fiendish form, succubi and incubi resemble humans or elves in shape and size, however they always posses several hellish’ qualities that can be quite diverse. Identifying these clues can help to predict a succubi’s or incubi’s plane of origin. Horns, fangs, and tails are quite common, while rarer specimens may include cloven hoofs, eyes resembling a cat or reptile. Exceptional examples posses monstrous skin, glowing tattoos, and eyes that are either black voids or ablaze with hellfire. Nearly all of these creatures posses strong wings and razor-sharp claws, although exceptions do exist. Along with these fearsome qualities are bodies that are tantalizing, with appealing curves in the most alluring places. Combine that with captivating conversation, flirtatious humor, and beguiling words and it is easy to understand why these creatures are so often irresistible. When disguising themselves, succubi and incubi magically shapeshift into a humanoid form they predict will be most desirable to their chosen prey. This new identity is nearly the same size, or slightly smaller than the fiend’s original form. They are inherently vain creatures, and that vanity demands they adopt a mortal disguise that closely resembles their true appearance whenever possible.

Dream DefilersSuccubi and incubi posses a supernatural ability to walk between the ethereal plane, a misty, fog-bound dimension frequented by ghosts and supernatural monsters, and the material plane where most mortals dwell. By doing so, these monsters are able to traverse through doors, walls, and other obstacles with ease. Succubi and incubi use this ability to visit unsuspecting victims while they are asleep. The fiend then begins its corruption by whispering forbidden desires to the sleeper, inspiring dreams with images of their darkest fantasies playing out. As an individual experiences debauched scenes of unspeakable taboos and irresistible temptation they become more susceptible to corruption in their waking hours. As the mortal wakes, the fiend attempts to charm them and then vanishes into the ethereal plane - content to watch and wait. The succubus or incubus waits for situations where the mortal might be tempted to perform an evil act, large or small. At the most opportune moments the fiend whispers vile ideas and foul encouragement into the mortal’s mind, slowly driving them to a moment of weakness. If a victim resists the temptation, a succubus or incubus eventually approaches its chosen target in an idealistic and attractive disguise to influence

Kiss of DeathBards across the multiverse tell tales of this fiend’s final kiss, but the power in their lips is more terrible than any words can fully describe. Terrifying yet tantalizing, the kiss is the final coup-de-grace to a corrupted soul. When a soul is fully corrupted by actions made of its own free will, the fiend seals the deal with a kiss, quite literally. The mortal victim experiences a shocking emotional emptiness and is wracked with pain as its soul is torn asunder. These sensations of pain and emptiness are an echo of the fiend’s own profound emptiness and ravenous hunger for corrupted souls. A corrupted creature killed by the kiss of a succubus or incubus has its soul ripped from its body and sent to the lower planes.

them directly. Sometimes a mortal nearing total corruption hesitates to go any further. When this happens, the fiend will often appear before them when they are alone, revealing itself in its full-fiendish glory in an effort to convince them of the futility of resistance - An immortal fiend has already blackened their soul.

Unholy UnionSuccubi and incubi are capable of reproducing with each other, as well as with demons, devils, mortals, and perhaps other creatures. When succubi and incubi reproduce with each other they create more of their own kind. However, when these fiends and a humanoid create offspring, the result is typically a cambion. Cambions inherit the hellish hallmarks of a fiend and the resourcefulness of its mortal parent. Physically powerful, charismatic and charming, and possessing potent magic of their own, these fiends

are formidable threats. Violent and perverse, the foul cambions are capable of rising to the highest ranks of any evil organization, carving out a space for itself via strength, charm, and deception.

Soul JackersSuccubi and incubi have the ability to steal a mortal’s soul and to send the soul’s energy to the lower planes. Each fiend’s planar loyalties determine where exactly the soul is deposited. An archdevil of the Nine Hells might use the souls to bolster its infernal legions, or trap them in soul coins to fuel its war machines. Graz’zt, a demon lord could use the dark energies of The Abyss to create new slaves in his lairs or to reinforce his demonic hordes. Souls received by a Night Hag, or Rakshasa, are likely to power profane rituals of dark magic, or to be raised as spectral undead servants. A succubus or incubus working alone might consume the souls itself to increase its own power. A uniquely powerful succubus or incubus might have a rare ability to store the souls in a private demiplane to be used later or to trade them with other outsiders throughout the various crossroads and trading posts of the planes.

Fall-From-GraceNot all succubi or incubi are evil, as is proven by the deeds of one succubus in the city of Sigil. Fall-From-Grace was a succubus born in the Abyss and given to the Nine Hells by her mother, Red Shroud. After years of captivity Fall-From-Grace outwitted and escaped from her infernal master. She traveled to Sigil and joined the Society of Sensation, a faction of philosophers who believe that the multiverse can only truly be known by experiencing as much of it as possible. Grace established The Brothel of Slating Intellectual Lusts, whose staff offer intellectual and emotional stimulation rather than sexual services. Fall-From-Grace is a Lawful Neutral succubus priest who is chaste and serves no deity; Instead, she is able to focus her magic through her own inner philosophy and faith. Grace believes in attaining enlightenment through experiences, rather they be found in pleasure, or pain, merriment or suffering.

Villainous PlotsA succubus or incubus is not a creature well suited to the front lines of a battle and they know it. Instead of relying on brute strength, they prefer to depend on deception and manipulation to weave elaborate plots against those who would stand in their way. They spy on their enemies, identify the most promising or exciting targets, and then resorts to the long game. The fiend employs all of its guile and trickery to slowly corrupt its target, soil their reputation, and lead them to their own destruction. Their plots differ wildly depending on the personality and goals of the fiend, and the resources currently at the creature’s disposal. Some of the most common plots are described in the following paragraphs.

Drain Souls

Rather driven eternally by a hungering lust or on behalf of some devious master, these fiends typically consider damning their next soul to be their central objective. How a particular succubi or incubi goes about the hunt varies widely, and may change over time. A succubus or incubus might lay in wait for months in the relative safety of a treasure-filled dungeon, satisfying its own curiosity by exploring the halls, while it waits for greedy adventurers who can be easily tempted. However, if too much time passes the fiend may grow impatient or it might simply prefer more daring and complex plots. These greedy monsters have no compunctions with infiltrating a settlement to ensure a steady stream of souls. A succubi or incubi who hasn’t drained a soul in some time could target several easily corrupted souls at once, while a more fastidious creature spends years focusing all of its energy on corrupting the most righteous knight in the kingdom.

Corrupt the Righteous

No downfall is more rewarding than that of a virtuous soul. Although it takes longer, sometimes months or years, the vile glory and exquisite sensation in the end makes the wait worthwhile. Succubi and incubi are immortal, patient, and crave the most exquisite pleasure. That alone demands that a self-respecting fiend be able to properly identify righteous mortals with any hint of darkness within them. The fiends who are more punctilious with their prey will exclusively seek out paladins, clerics, and champions of hope and justice. Through unyielding manipulation and subtle temptation, these master charmers inevitably corrupt and control many who once thought themselves immune to desire. Unless stopped, a succubus or incubus can slowly transform a hero who was once a shining example of good into a twisted shadow of depravity and evil.Sample

Establish a Cult

For these charming and beautiful creatures, attracting those who are easily influenced comes naturally. Succubi and incubi might create a cult for many different reasons. For a fiend, a cult can be an ideal method to quickly corrupt a large number of mortal souls. Alternatively, a succubus or incubus might be seeking followers to help it complete a more intricate plot. Cultists might be necessary to help summon a more powerful fiend, to steal an item the succubi or incubi wants, or to serve as an elaborate network of spies and information gatherers. A succubi or incubi seeking to destroy an empire might establish a cult to seed dissent in the local population. The appearance and purpose of a cult reflects the goals of the fiend who gathered them, or those of its master.

Release the Master

In deadly dungeons across the multiverse evil entities have been imprisoned for eternity. In most cases, these creatures were sealed away because they could not be dealt with directly by those who encountered them. A succubus or incubus may have once served an immortal spellcaster, been directed by a dreadful archdevil, or answered to an insane demon lord. Alternatively, a succubus or incubus could be summoned by a cult to aid them

Blood War Recruiter

Across the Lower Planes the Blood War between devils and demons rages eternally. The conflict occasionally spills over into nearby planes, leaving absolute desolation in its wake. Succubi and incubi are commonly employed as spies, envoys, and messengers for the devils and the demons, as well as neutral factions and individuals. When encountered in this capacity a succubus or incubus may want to recruit mortals to a particular task rather than immediately trying to corrupt them (the two are not always mutually exclusive). A group of adventurers might be asked to secure an important planar portal, strike down a dangerous demon, recover a lost artifact, or to capture a tactically valuable location. These missions are always incredibly dangerous and in some cases seemingly suicidal. As leverage and motivation, fiends are known to remind hesitant adventurers of how many lives could be lost because a demonic incursion went ignored.

in releasing their own ancient master. Freeing an imprisoned entity is complex and unique. Such a plot may require several small plots as part of a bigger plan. For example, the ritual to release the master might require stealing one or more special items, reaching a well-defended location, or capturing mortal souls to use as sacrifices.
