According to theAmerican Sleep ApneaAssociation, obstructivesleep apnea (OSA) hasbecome a significanthealth issue in the UnitedStates. In fact, it’s esti-mated that 22 millionAmericans suffer fromsleep apnea, and as highas 90 percent of thosecases are undiagnosed. That means the baristawho mixes your morningcoffee, the scheduler whomakes your doctor ap-pointment or, worse, theperson in the car next toyou on the highway, couldall be suffering fromobstructive sleep apneaand not even know it.

To help focus attentionon the hazards of undiag-nosed OSA and the over-all importance of a goodnight’s sleep, Dr. TimothyJ. Kitzmiller, DDS andfounder of CincinnatiDental Sleep Medicine, ishosting a series of openhouses during NationalSleep Awareness Week,March 3-10. The week issponsored by the Nation-al Sleep Foundation(NSF) and begins with

the release of NSF’sSleep in America® pollon Monday, March 4, andends with the return todaylight saving time, onSunday, March 11, whenclocks move ahead onehour and too many Amer-icans lose an hour ofsleep. For more informa-tion about National SleepAwareness Week and theNational Sleep Founda-tion, visitsleepfoundation.org.

“We’ll be participatingin a number of openhouses that week,” saidDr. Kitzmiller. “We hopepeople stop by for freesleep screenings and toget information on thediagnosis and treatmentof OSA and other sleepdisorders. We also offercomplimentary consulta-tions at our office year-round.”

Dr. Kitzmiller has adeep understanding of

the hazards of OSA be-cause he himself has it.In fact, he started Cincin-nati Dental Sleep Medi-cine because he didn’tlike wearing the continu-ous positive airway pres-sure (CPAP) mask whensleeping. (A CPAP maskis the most commontreatment for OSA.)“Many people can’t toler-ate a CPAP machine be-cause of discomfort, claustrophobia or just theinconvenience of havingto wear a mask everytime you go to bed. So Ienrolled in specializedtraining out of state toprovide myself and mypatients a CPAP alterna-tive called an oral appli-ance,” Dr. Kitzmillersaid. “It’s a medical de-vice that fits over yourteeth and holds the lowerjaw forward while you

Ac-cording to Craig,“Ekornes does someunique things like robot-ic bending their owncold steel and pouringtheir own foam, whichincreases quality controland consistency. So theyreally do own the entiremanufacturing process.”

Speaking of owningtheir product, Best hasmany customers whoown multiple Stresslesschairs. “A lot of custom-ers have multiple chairsin their homes, RV’s,boats, vacation homes, you name it. I believe the

It is no secret thatmore andmore familiesare choosing cremation astheir final disposition. One of the leading driversof this trend has been theCatholic Church’s accep-tance of cremation as anapprovedmethod of dis-position.

With the rise in crema-tion, Cincinnati CatholicCemetery Society hasadapted tomeet thechanging needs of fam-

ilies in the community.Last year, the cemeteriesintroduced new finalresting places specificallydesigned for crematedremains. These newme-morials, called columbar-ia, are one of a number ofways that families cancreate a peaceful, finalresting placewithin thecemetery.

Final Wishes Crema-tion Service, located inCheviot, near St. Martinof Tours Church, hasserved the communityfor more than six years.Final Wishes is not a full-service funeral home.Although there are staffmembers available 24hours a day who are li-censed in Ohio, Kentuckyand Indiana to respond toyour phone calls andrequests for service, theoperational expenses aremuch lower than a full-service funeral home. Therefore, Final Wishescan pass the savings on to

See CREMATORY, Page 8

When preplanning afuneral, it’s wise not toassume that the funeralhome owns the crema-tory, becausemost fu-neral homes do not.

While all funeralhomes can offer crema-tion or advertise them-selves as a “cremationservice,” few own andoperate their own cre-matory equipment. Thismeans your loved one oryouwill be transferredto someplace else and becared for by someone

else other than the funer-al home you have con-tractedwith.

»DON’T FAIL TO CON-SIDER THE REPUTATIONAND TRUSTWORTHI-NESSOF THE FUNERALHOME. A funeral is oneof life’smajor events, soit’s important to have ittaken care of by peopleyou know and can trust.

The staff at ReboldRosenacker & SextonFuneral Home and Cre-matory in Cheviot offertips to help make themost appropriate deci-sions for a loved one oryourself.

» DON’T WAIT UNTILSOMEONE IS SICK, al-though many familiesdo. The best time tomake a funeral plan iswhen everyone ishealthy.

You can give the timeand attention necessaryto make educated andinformed decisions foryour loved one or your-

self. And it only takesabout an hour of yourtime.

» DON’T PUT YOURCHOICES IN YOURWILL.Typically, your will is notread until after the fu-neral has taken place.

The best way to besure your wishes arecarried out is to planwith a funeral director. They will keep yourspecific choices on file.

Death is an inevitablepart of living, but youcan spare your lovedones the anguish andemotional pain of takingcare of those final de-tails by preplanningyour funeral now.

According to TonyPolicastro, president ofVorhis & Ryan FuneralHomes, there are threeadvantages of preneedplanning. “One, yourfamily is relieved ofthat emotional burden ata time when they maybe least prepared toface it. Two, you get thefuneral you want, theway you want it. Andthree, the cost is fixedat today’s prices,” hesaid.

With funeral inflationand general inflationrising faster than thesavings rate, Policas-tro’s last point is per-haps the best reason to

turn to Vorhis & Ryanfor pre-need planning. They use an insurancetrust that provides acompound annuity toguarantee their priceson everything from thecasket to the service tothe flowers and newspa-per notices.

Vorhis & Ryan offersprices ranging from$995 for cremation up to$4,495 for an entirefuneral package.

Vorhis & Ryan Funer-al Homes have threeOhio locations – Spring-dale, Lockland and Nor-wood. Get more infor-mation atvorhisandryan.com. Orcall 513-821-0062.

Policastro summedup the value offered byVorhis & Ryan FuneralHomes this way: “Weare an economy funeralhome that offers fullservice.”

Planning aheadfixes funeralexpenses attoday’s prices

the consumer in the formof lower prices.

For $1,050, servicesinclude transportationfrom the hospital, in-patient hospice or nurs-ing home, and completionof necessary documentswith the next of kin, med-ical certifier and thehealth department. Ap-proved containers for thedeceased’s body and theashes or cremains areprovided. The cremationfee, health departmentpermit fee, Ohio sales taxand one certified deathcertificate are included.Shop other cremationservices by telephoneand compare prices. Fi-nal Wishes is among theleast expensive you willfind.

When you’re shopping, also ask these questions:Where is my loved one’sbody sheltered until thetime for cremation? Whohas custody of the body?Where does the crema-

tion take place? Who doesthe cremation? The factis, any funeral home canoffer and advertise as acremation service, butfew have the necessaryequipment which allowsthem to directly providecremation to a clientfamily. Most funeralhomes transfer the dece-dent’s body to a thirdparty.

This sets Final Wishesapart from the rest: Weown the crematory equip-ment. When permissionfor custody is given toour staff, we take pos-session of the decedent. That person comes to ourfacilities, stays with us atour facilities, is cared forby our staff, and the de-cedent’s cremains arereturned to the family byour staff. The decedentnever leaves our custodyor our facility.

If you desire a tradi-tional or special urn, ourretail center includes alarge display. Even if youhave chosen anotherprovider for cremation,we are still available tohelp you with the pur-

chase of appropriateurns. Our display andcatalog collection allowsyou to choose from full-size urns, keepsake ormini urns and cremationjewelry from the topmanufacturers.

More families are alsochoosing to plan and holdmemorial services with-out the assistance of afull-service funeral pro-vider. Our retail centeralso includes a largeselection of visitor regis-tration books, funeralthank-you or acknowl-edgment cards, and wecan arrange for the print-ing of Catholic and non-traditional memorialcards and service pro-grams.

Final Wishes staffmembers can also assistyou with funeral planningand prefunding. Manypeople have chosen tomake their own funeralplans and also have madearrangements to pay forthe plans in advance ofneed so their family doesnot have either the emo-tional or financial bur-dens.

or friend? Or are you justanother client?

Is the funeral homeprivate or corporateowned? If there is a prob-lem, who answers to you?

Have they been inbusiness for a few years?Or generations?

Do your friends andneighbors recommendthem?

Does the funeral homestaff live in the neigh-borhood? Shop at yourlocal stores? Attend thesame churches andschools as you and othersin the neighborhood?Involved and supportcommunity functions? Also seek out locallyowned and operated busi-ness when they need

work done in their homesor offices?

If you choose funeralplanning and prefunding, your funds are secured ata third party, as requiredby Ohio law.

The funds remaintransferable, in case youmove out of the area orchoose another provider, and you always retainfreedom of choice.

Your prepaid funeral

funds are irrevocable, meaning you cannot get arefund or cancel the plan. This is important if youare trying to obtain assis-tance fromMedicaid. Anirrevocable prepaid fu-neral plan is an exemptasset.

As difficult as it maybe to talk about the deathof a loved one, it’s evenharder to face it whilemaking funeral arrange-ments. That’s why Mi-hovk-Rosenacker FuneralHomes recommendspreplanning.

Preplanning makessure all of the arrange-ments are taken care ofbeforehand, from casketselection to type of ser-vice to flowers – evenwhat the deceased willwear and what musicmight be played. “But the

added advantage of pre-paying is price protec-tion, which locks in fu-neral expenses at today’sprices,” said Karen Mi-hovk.

One of the newesttrends Mihovk is seeingin funeral planning ispersonalization.

“You can get specialinner panels and colorsand end corners on cas-kets that reflect hobbiesor a particular branch ofservice,” she said.

These themes can becarried out in other mer-

chandise, including urns,register books and pray-er cards/memorial fold-ers

Mihovk-Rosenackeroffers all types of funeralservices and merchan-dise, including crema-tion. And with locationson both sides of town –the east, at 10211 Plain-field Road, and west,5527 Cheviot Road –they’re waiting to serveyour preplanning needs.Visit www.mrfh.com.

Planning in advance easesthe burden for loved ones

cremation as somethingless than a traditionalservice,” said Steve Bittn-er, president of Cincin-nati Catholic CemeterySociety. “Many people areunaware that families canhonor their loved one’spreferences while stillholding Mass and havinga committal of some kindon a consecrated proper-ty like a cemetery.”

The Cincinnati Catho-lic Cemetery Societyoperates St. Joseph OldCemetery in Price Hill,St. Mary Cemetery andSt. John Cemetery in St.Bernard, as well as Balti-more Pike non-denom-inational cemetery inPrice Hill. Over the re-cent years, these ceme-teries have created newofferings for familiesthat prefer cremation.

St. Joseph Old Ceme-tery and St. Mary recent-ly had new columbariainstalled, creating threechoices for families whoprefer cremation. Inaddition to the columbar-

ia, families can create amemorial with a glass-front niche that safelyand securely displays theurn within the mausole-um. Bittner added thatmany families blend tra-dition with cremation bysimply burying crematedremains in the ground ona family plot.

“The Church has al-

lowed cremation for thepast twenty years ormore. But there are con-ditions that many fam-ilies are not aware of,”Bittner said. “For ex-ample, the Church teach-es that our earthly re-mains – whether intact orcremated – are meant tobe treated with reverenceand dignity. TheMass of

Christian Burial is animportant part of theCatholic faith that many

families are unaware of.”Bittner indicated that

with the rise in crema-tion, an increasing num-ber of families prefer toforgo funeral servicesand rituals altogether. After working with fam-ilies for more than 40years, Bittner has seenthat funeral services andcommittal services are animportant part of thehealing process.

“Everyone experi-ences grief differently, but the rituals of Massand committal are impor-tant to help the faithfulsay goodbye and comfortthose who experienceloss,” he said. “If you area Catholic consideringcremation, either as afinal wish for yourself oras part of the process ofcarrying out a loved one'swishes, you are urged todiscuss the matter withthe officiating priest.”

wished. It’s not enoughto simply mention yourdesires to your family. They can forget whatyou told them or evendisagree with each oth-er. Usually this is notthe case if a funeralplan has been made.

» DON’T DO ALL OFYOUR SHOPPING OVERTHE PHONE. While fu-neral homes are re-quired to provide priceinformation to consum-ers over the phone, youmay want to inspect thefacilities and meet thestaff face to face. Youmight be more comfort-able and more secure inyour decisions whenyou personally know thepeople you are dealingwith.

» DON’T BASE YOURDECISIONS SOLEY ONPRICE. Staying withinyour budget is mostimportant.

You also need to con-sider the quality of themerchandise they offer, the look and feel of thefuneral home facilitiesand the experience levelof the staff.

» DON’T COMPAREPRICES WITHOUTKNOW WHAT IS ANDWHAT IS NOT INCLUD-ED. Always compare thebottom line, the finalcost. And try to com-pare apples to apples.

When making a fu-neral plan and discuss-ing costs, discuss everydetail, every time.

People most oftenfail to compare thesame merchandise of-fered at different funer-al homes. If a casket hasthe same name at differ-ent funeral homes, don’tassume it is of the samequality or even from thesame manufacturer. Youcannot even assumethat it is made in Amer-ica.

Compare service fees

by using the GeneralPrice List; some will behigher or lower thanothers and all of themwill charge differentlyfor caskets and burialvaults they offer. Re-member to always com-pare the bottom line.

» DON’T OVERLOOKHOW THE FUNERALHOME MANAGES THEDETAILS. Personaliza-tion of the services andmerchandise makes theceremonies memorablefor everyone. Do theyoffer a memory table?Picture boards? Bigscreen for your DVD?Do they offer options tocustomize the casket orcremation urn, if youdesire? Do they offer avariety of prayer cards?Folders? VisitorsBooks? Thank-youcards? Choice of ser-vices offered, availablemerchandise and arange of prices are im-portant to most families.

» DON’T FORGET TOASK ABOUT GUARAN-TEES. If you are alsoconsidering prefundingyour funeral plan, askwhat price guaranteesare offered, if any. Isyour money secure?Refundable? What if thefuneral home goes outof business or changesownership?

Some other questionsto ask:

What if I move out oftown? What if I want tochange to another funer-al home?

» DON’T FORGET TOASK WHAT HAPPENSAFTER YOU LEAVE THECEMETERY. Hopefullythe answer is not, “We’llsend the bill.”

Most funeral direc-tors feel some responsi-bility to assist you withnecessary documentsand certificates.

Some also offer re-ferral services, literaryresources, follow-upvisits and special holi-day memorial programsdesigned to help youcope with your grief.
