“Having gone through thework on Taylor James’s site,I was really interested tosee the step-by-stepguides they give to some of their key projects,” saysillustrator Von. “The juxta-position between photosthey were working on andthe elements they wereadding in when theyweren’t fully rendered waswhat really caught my eye.It was this in-betweenstage in which I saw

echoes of the way I treatmy images.”

“Due to time constric-tions, and both of ourmethods being quite time-consuming, we had to workwith an existing image ofmine,” Von explains. “Wewent with a drawing of anOwl I did in 2008 becauseit already had a veryangular, 3D feel whichprovided a great startingblock for Taylor James to dotheir magic.”

Taylor James’s creativelead Ed Taylor explains howthey worked together on

the image: “We spent timeexperimenting in CG andmyself and Von discussedideas to develop thecreative in a way that wouldstand out in 3D. We sentwork-in-progress imagesand thoughts for theoverall direction to Vonregularly. For me achieving‘success’ was aboutgetting to a result that weboth felt happy with, onethat respected his work asinspiration. So I did myutmost to pay close atten-tion to Von’s feedbackwhilst also creating some-

thing that reflected ourskills and abilities at TaylorJames,” he explains.“Getting to the final imagewas a real challenge; howdo you take a picture fromone medium to another[Von works in pencil andink] – to create somethingnew and interesting, whilststill respecting the illustrative qualities of theoriginal? The piece didn’tneed to be stereotypically3D, ie with highlyconvincing form andshading, and I certainlydidn’t want it to be a

demonstration of any kindof gimmicks. Computergraphics has such limitlesscreative possibilities, thereis no inherent ‘style’, soworking in 3D you have tobe able to adapt to everyfresh challenge.”

For Von, “it was an inter-esting journey, with quite abit of to and fro, but endedup providing a lot of foodfor thought of where thingscould be taken in the futureon other projects. I’m veryhappy with the finaloutcome. It’s always inter-esting to hear how

someone interprets yourwork and so to see howthey do that with their ownskills and technology isdoubly so. With this kind ofproject there’s always a lurking danger that theimage gets taken off on amassive tangent but thefinal piece has retained the essence of the originalwhilst taking it to a differentarena, showcasing thetalents of Taylor James in a great light.”
