visibility across library resources using
NGL an OSS

Emmanuel Ebnazar
Seminar on "Enhancing Access to Library Resources. A Critical Discussion,
Examination and Evaluation of Web-Scale Discovery Services"
Organized by SLA Asian Chapter in collaboration with Jain University & KALA, sponsored by
• Different tools for library automation, IR or Digital Library, social networking, KM, Search Engines - Inconvenience to library/ians in terms of Cost & Effort involved in IT infrastructure required in hosting, maintaining these different tools.
• Library resources dispersed on different databases/locations –Inconvenience to users, as user had to search multiple databases/search engines for a piece of information required.
• Library services dispersed on different locations – Difficult for users to follow – Content Pages, New Arrivals, New Book Request, User self Services, Newsletters.
2
Why LMS with information services, KM & Social
media features
This situation was defeating
/damaging the purpose/sprit of
2nd 3rd and 4th laws of library
science.
3
Other influencing factors-Changing Scenario
• Increase in the scope of media handled by libraries-Physical toelectronic, with different file formats.
• Increase in the scope of library services-Circulation, electronicmedia, information service, KM, social networking.
• Library services to the users from different generations andchanges in media preferences. Influence of Social media.
• Changing trends in Publication Industry (Print & Electronic).
• Changing business models/pricing of e-resources databases/aggregators.
4
Other influencing factors-Changing Scenario
• Open Access Initiatives
• Library Competitors which are not taken seriously by LISprofession but have detrimental impact on library and theyare;
– User self managed e-Journal and e-book databases(without librarian).
– Online vendors allowing users to buy e-book anddownload on e-readers.
– Commercial library service providers like Just BooksInc, Kwench Inc providing library services in Indiathreatening survival of corporate & special libraries.
5
Other influencing factors-Changing Scenario
• Increasing cost of commercial Library automation software.
• Increase in the cost of publications and in contrast dwindling
Library Budget.
6
Solutions: Single tool/Platform
• A single tool with which the library community is
familiar and further which can be exploited and
used not only for library automation but can also be
used for Digital Library resources, knowledge
sharing and social networking.
This is the one solution among various solutions
available to cope up with the existing situation in
LIS
7
Review of Literature
• Literature search on “Library automation tool”for “DL”, “KM” and “Social Media” – Tenimportant papers.
• Single tool is still not a focused area ofresearch among library researches.
• Though there are some theoretical paperswhich describes how a single tool can be usedfor library automation, DL,IR & KM but theseconcepts to be practically checked and realizedby the library researchers or library softwaredevelopers.

Resource Integration: Challenges
• Organizational policy restrictions.
• Non cooperation from the Database Vendors – Cost.
• Support from the library automation tool providers/
developers.
• Technical issues: Different algorithms used, response time
from different databases.
