Creating Adequate Safe SpaceSTEM 352 Final Project

Teachers College of San Joaquin
Driving Force for Design Project
• All students need the opportunity to play when at school• Play increases students’ ability to focus, which supports
learning• Need to share the space with 7th & 8th Grade Physical
Education classes• To insure all 4th – 6th grader students have an adequate
amount of space to safely play each recess
Process for Design Project
Discussion focused on:• why students need to play & its benefits• defining adequate safe space • reasons for needing adequate safe space• the design process expectationswhat will the kids do?how will they do it?what do they need to know for all parts?
NGSS
• 3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
• 3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
• 3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
