WHO were the Sumerians?
• The name “Sumer” means “land of the civilised people”
• This word came from a neighbouring culture – the Sumerians only called themselves the “black-headed people”
• The Sumerians migrated into the fertile Mesopotamian area – but their origins are a mystery
A Very Brief History
• Around 3500 BC, the Sumerian people settled in Mesopotamia
• The first known King recorded in Sumerian history was named Etana, described as `he who stabilized all the lands’
• Sumerian cities each had rulers who competed for power in the area e.g. Uruk, Ur, Eridu, Nippur
The End of Sumerian Civilisation• In 2334 BC, Sumer was conquered by the
Akkadian Empire• From 2047-1750 BC Sumerian culture was
revived in the city of Ur – a final period of greatness
• Great works of literature and law were written• 1750 BC – Ur is destroyed by the Amorites. The
land was also no longer fertile• The Sumerians migrated away and ceased to
exist as a culture
Introduction to the Sumerian City
• Sumeria was the first known civilisation to display the features of a civilisation.
