WHO were the Sumerians?

• The name “Sumer” means “land of the civilised people”

• This word came from a neighbouring culture – the Sumerians only called themselves the “black-headed people”

• The Sumerians migrated into the fertile Mesopotamian area – but their origins are a mystery

A Very Brief History

• Around 3500 BC, the Sumerian people settled in Mesopotamia

• The first known King recorded in Sumerian history was named Etana, described as `he who stabilized all the lands’

• Sumerian cities each had rulers who competed for power in the area e.g. Uruk, Ur, Eridu, Nippur

revived in the city of Ur – a final period of greatness
