DAY 1: Basic Option: Diamond Lake to Crater Lake Approximately 20 miles with 2,700 feet of climbing

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Lodge at Eagle Crest (1522 Cline Falls Road, Redmond) at 9:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a scenic 2-hour shuttle into the Cascades, you’ll be welcomed with a gourmet Trek Travel picnic at Diamond Lake. In the shadow of Mt.Thielson you can take a quick dip in the lake before your bike fitting. After a brief orientation and safety talk, saddle up and ascend to the rim of the caldera formed by the eruption of the ancient volcano Mt. Mazama to peer down on magnificent Crater Lake. While the climb is long and moderately challenging for a first day, a short shuttle can help minimize the work. We don’t want to ruin the surprise, but cresting the rim and peering into the vast caldera lake may well be one of the most memorable moments of your trip. The lake is one of the deepest in the world at 1949 feet and was formed about 7700 years ago when the volcano erupted. The contrast of jagged snow-capped peaks and crystal blue water is stunning. After this treat, you’ll get to know one other better over drinks and dinner at the Lodge before retiring to your room for a well-earned rest.

DAY 2: Basic Option: Crater Lake Rim Loop Approximately 33 miles with 3,700 feet of climbing

Short Option: Crater Lake Rim to Cleetwood Cove Approximately 11 miles with 1,000 feet of climbing

Hike: Crater Lake Cleetwood Trail Approximately 2.2 miles with 700 feet of climbing

Interpretive Boat Cruise: Crater Lake

The full Crater Lake experience awaits you today! As you pedal the entire rim road around Crater Lake, marvel at the fact that the pre-eruption mountain was twice as high as the current rim - with experts estimating the blast that created the lake was around 420 times more powerful than the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. With a wealth of viewpoints and hiking options along the route, you will see the drama and nuances of this stunning landscape from the full 360 degrees. A lakeside packed lunch follows a hike down into the crater where a boat awaits you. The boat tour brings you up close to features like the Old Man, the Phantom Ship and Wizard Island, while a Ranger from the National Park Service will join you onboard to teach guests about these natural features of the volcano and lake. Dinner tonight will be served again at the Crater Lake Lodge.

DAY 5: Basic Option: Bend to Smith Rock State Park Approximately 32 miles with 500 feet of climbing

Avid Option: Bend to Sisters via Smith Rock State Park Approximately 62 miles with 1,475 feet of climbing

Hike: Smith Rock State Park

This morning you’ll ride deeper into the high desert before stopping for lunch at the dramatic Smith Rock State Park, which offers a wealth of opportunities for adventure! Besides being a world-class climbing area, the canyon that forms Smith Rock has an extensive network of trails, ranging from mellow to strenuous. You can also take a climbing lesson this afternoon or hike to watch climbers scale one of the many famous routes, such as Monkey Face. Alternatively, you can choose an additional 30 miles of riding along quiet country roads into the pine forest of Sisters. If you prefer something a little more low key you may also take advantage of one of the region’s best spas, Shibui at Five Pine Lodge. Whichever activity you choose, this stellar day is sure to be a highlight of your Central Oregon vacation. This evening you and your companions will gather for a final social hour to enjoy more local brews and wine, followed by a farewell dinner at the highly acclaimed Jen’s Garden in Sisters.

DAY 6: Basic Option: Sisters to Belknap Hot Springs via McKenzie Highway Approximately 39 miles with 2,200 feet of climbing

McKenzie Pass is a gateway between the dry and the wet sides of the Cascades, and is perhaps the most popular road to ride in the Northwest. This morning it just happens to be right outside your back door! While many final days of trips tend to be more low key than the rest of the trip, today is a truly climactic end to your vacation of a lifetime! The 16-mile climb is the perfect grade and tops out with stunning views of expansive lava flows and magnificent views of the Cascade peaks, including Mt. Hood from yet another dramatic new angle. The historic Dee Wright Observatory is an impressive place to take in the scenery and celebrate your conquest of the pass, because from here the next 22 miles are ALL downhill. Cruising through increasingly dense forest, you’ll arrive at one of the country’s most famous and scenic rivers, the McKenzie, where a final café lunch awaits you on the riverside, as well as some hot spring soaking pools and showers. You’ll say farewell to your guides at 2:00 PM at the Belknap Hot Springs.
