LEVEL 4 HIGHER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

The Level 4 Higher Management Programme has been developed to support the career progression of our pub, hotel and restaurant managers at Greene King.

This programme has been built to help managers develop their comprehensive business knowledge, consolidate their management capabilities and learn the technical skills needed to take on higher level responsibilities such as planning and implementing change. This course will deliver well-rounded managers, able to drive workplace performance – critical to our long-term success.

To support delivering this higher management development journey, learning will be delivered through a combination of classes (with pre-session work to be completed), study groups, self-study and 1-2-1 support.

WHO’S IT FOR?

This qualification is for all General Managers or equivalent, who have ambitions to develop a career within Greene King. This may be taking on a larger pub or looking at progressing into a Business Development Manager (BDM) role. The course will provide a better understanding of you as a leader, and offer the tools to manage your own professional development.

WHAT’S INVOLVED?

Equivalent to a foundation degree, this qualification requires a high level of commitment and dedication. To take part in this programme, you will have been nominated by your BDM as someone who has the potential and desire to progress. You will also need to take an online diagnostic in maths and English, complete a small assignment and attend an induction day prior to authorising your enrolment.

The programme is delivered over 15 months and by the end you will have gained a Level 4 Diploma in Management, certified through ILM – the leading awarding organisation for management qualifications.

To achieve this, you will need to complete the following:

A total of ten off-site classroom and study days A suite of work based learning assignments and projects On the job observations and coaching

As a learner, we will be asking you to commit to self-study and distance learning outside of the class and group sessions, to be able to complete your assignments and projects that will be assessed for your qualification. There will be an expectation to devote at least 20 hours to study per month.

You will also be asked to sign our Further Education Policy to confirm your commitment towards completing the programme.

TEAM MANAGEMENT

CLASS AND STUDY DAYS

Attendance at class and study days are a mandatory part of your commitment to the Level 4 Higher Management Programme.

Class days are taught sessions run by a Lifetime Trainer and L&D Manager, designed to deliver the knowledge elements of the qualification. These are split into six classes, details of which can be found in the following section of this guide. The classes will help to ensure you are able to complete all the assignment and project activities.

Study days have been scheduled throughout the programme to follow-up on class sessions. They are scheduled at times and places away from busy sites, where you can study together with your Level 4 colleagues. Lifetime Trainers will be on hand to assist with questions and support with any specific areas you need help with. The intention is that you use these sessions to write and review assignments and project work. However, there remains a requirement to devote extra time to self-study away from these sessions in order to complete the course.

You will be provided with all class and study dates ahead of the programme starting. If for any reason you cannot attend a given date, you must reschedule onto one of the other available dates scheduled for other groups running in the same timeframe. You will also be eligible to claim wage credits to support with cover at your site during your ten off-site class and study sessions.

PRE-CLASS WORK

In preparation for class sessions, you will be required to regularly complete distance learning activities. All pre-work is mandatory and directly links into each class. Completing bite sized research and planning tasks helps to break down the knowledge you will need for these sessions into smaller, more manageable chunks. It also forms a number of class activities and discussions to ensure your learning has been embedded.

ASSIGNMENT AND PROJECT WORK

Throughout your qualification, you’ll complete a series of written assignments and projects. These will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and application of leadership and management theories. The assignments you write will also be based on your ongoing objectives. This means they’re directly linked and contextualised to your job role, giving you the tools to analyse your business, formulating plans and ideas to drive it forward.

INDUCTION DAY

Following your BDM endorsement and the outcome of your online diagnostic and pre-assignment, you and your BDM will be invited to attend an induction day. This will form the final assessment of suitability and commitment to the course prior to being signed onto programme.

The day will also provide you with further details of the course to ensure it’s the best path for you. This will include;

Benefits to you and your business Qualification overview Programme delivery Commitment required Challenges and expectations

There will be an opportunity to meet and talk first hand to Lifetime Trainers, as well as colleagues who have recently completed their Level 4 qualification.

SIX CLASS SESSIONS

1 Innovation and Risk

Innovation is crucial to the continuing success of our business. This class will offer you the tools and techniques to identify innovative ideas for your site. You’ll then look at the benefits and constraints of innovation. Importantly, you’ll learn how you can identify risks involved before implementing any new ideas.

This leads on to understanding business risk – what is it? What are the different models and theories for identifying risk in your site? You’ll then start to think about how you can manage and mitigate this back in your business.

2 Business Improvement and Change

Building on innovation and risk, this session will focus on driving improvements within your business. How do you take your ideas and implement changes in the workplace?

This class will explore problem solving techniques, constraints that affect change and the implications of change. We’ll look at the business decision-making process and how this can be used to help with change implementation.

As we discuss our ideas, we’ll look at how to conduct a cost-benefit analysis and apply this to a continuous improvement plan.

This will help ensure you’re able to complete your project activity. Taking your improvement ideas, you’ll analyse them and start to formulate a change improvement plan for your business, to ensure these ideas are feasible and are effectively implemented back in your business.

CONSIDER

Line Manager/BDM

They’ll have been part of the process from your first application and will be interested to watch/support your development during your time on programme. Remember, they’re investing in both your time and resource in nominating you onto the course. Agree regular catch ups with them throughout the programme. Make sure you are communicating well and work together to ensure you are managing your workload alongside your operational responsibilities. Spend time discussing your learnings on the course – you may gain some great insights!

Friends and family

Make sure that you talk to your nearest and dearest about what you are doing. This is not a course to take lightly and will require you to devote some of your personal time to studying and completing assignments. Your friends and family can help support you.

HEAR FROM OUR PARTNERS, LIFETIME TRAINING

For those considering whether this course is the best path for you, Elaine Spong, Lifetime Level 4 Regional Trainer, talks about some of the realities of the course.

“Time constraint is one of the biggest barriers to successfully progressing through this course. Before putting yourself forward for this qualification, my advice would be to speak with your manager and gain their support.

“Remember, you will be required to commit up to 20 hours per month to study – for 15 months. Often working in a busy role can pose a challenge. Work can quickly pile up if not managed so it’s important that you plan and consider how this course will fit around your business and personal priorities.

“This qualification is the equivalent to a foundation degree. As well as observations, this course involves a lot of independent study and project work so you will be expected to regularly produce a number of well-researched and reference assignments.

“For all the hard work, this is a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself as a manager and enhance your career prospects with Greene King. Learners who have achieved this qualification have not only come away with newfound knowledge and skills to apply back into their business, but also a great sense of pride and accomplishment. Your Regional Trainer will be on hand to support you every step of the way and we look forward to welcoming the next cohort of learners.”

THIS SOUNDS GREAT! HOW DO I APPLY?

Criteria for application:

Must be a General Manager or equivalent BDM backed application

Must be able to commit to class sessions and 20 hours of self-study per month

To apply to join the next intake of the Level 4 Management Programme, you’ll need to have a discussion with your BDM to ensure this is the best path for you. You then need to visit Best for Team or GK One, under the Apprenticeships section, and complete the Level 4 Expression of Interest Form. After which you’ll be invited to take an online diagnostic test and complete a pre-assignment to take your application to the next stage. This will be reviewed and if successful, you’ll be invited to attend an induction day to finalise your application and confirm your enrolment onto the course.

HOW THE LEVEL 4 MANAGEMENT COURSE HAS HELPED KELLY, A RECENTLY APPOINTED GENERAL MANAGER, IN HER NEW ROLE

“I’ve definitely found the Level 4 a help… it’s put all the pieces together for me which makes me feel more knowledgeable and confident in my role.”Kelly Ashmore, 33, is a single mum of two and a General Manager for Loch Fyne.

In 2015, Kelly was asked by her Business Development Manager, who knew she was more than capable of the task, whether she’d like to be nominated for the ILM Level 4 Management qualification.

“The opportunity to do my ILM Level 4 qualification just came at the right time really as I’d just been made General Manager. That’s not to say this wasn’t a massive step up, and the course a mammoth commitment. They were huge undertakings. But I’ve definitely found the Level 4 a help with my new day job.

“There are so many things you do as a manager that you don’t even question. Learning about management theories, such as Maslow and De Bono, was not only extremely interesting but also helped me make sense of processes I go through every day and why we do things in a restaurant that quite honestly I’d never even considered before. Its put all the pieces together for me, which makes me feel more knowledgeable and confident in my role.

“The budget assignment was useful and the leadership topic was an eye opener. I look at and deal with my team members in a very different way now because I know how they like to learn and what motivates them. We now work more effectively as a team and that’s a direct result of me taking the course.

“With all the positives I can’t sugar coat the fact that the Level 4 takes enormous commitment, both personally and professionally. There were many times, after I put the children to bed after a long shift, that I started what I called ‘my second job’, sitting down to complete coursework. I guess it takes a special kind of person, someone who loves what they’re doing and who is incredibly organised. ”

Kelly completed her ILM Level 4 with Lifetime Training in June 2016, one month early!

“ I have no idea how I did it… but, I did it. I’ve done what I set out to achieve and I feel fabulous for it. In fact, I’ve just been away with my close friends to Spain for the weekend to have some much needed me time and celebrate all I have achieved over the past year. Yes, it’s been a busy year but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

“WE NOW WORK MORE EFFICIENTLY

AS A TEAM AND THAT’S A DIRECT

RESULT OF ME TAKING THE COURSE”

Stick to deadlines. If you miss a deadline these can

easily snowball and get out of control. Finish one topic, then

move onto the next. Meet the deadlines your Regional Trainer gives you. There’s a

very good reason for them!

Make the most of your Regional Trainer. Build up

your relationship so you can freely ask for advice as and when you need to. Answers to the smallest questions can

help you breathe a sigh of relief and keep you

on track.

Embrace the course. Unless you find the course subjects hugely interesting

you’re likely to struggle to complete the course or manage your time

effectively.

Accept that it’s going to be hard work, then plan your

personal and professional time to fit this commitment

in. This is not something you’re going to breeze through but the results

will be well worth the effort.
