From Wikipedia:
The circular economy is a generic term for an industrial economy that is, by
design or intention, restorative and in which material flows are of two types,
biological nutrients, designed to reenter the biosphere safely, and technical
nutrients, which are designed to circulate at high quality without entering the
biosphere.

The new consumer Enabling technology
▪ 3 bn new consumers are
driving resource demand
▪ Exhaustion of easy-to-
access reserves
▪ Need for imports from volatile
regions stretches supply and
increases volatility
▪ Governments drive strategic
resource programs (EU
Resource efficiency directive,
Mistra Circular Economy call)
▪ Landfill taxes, recycling
targets etc
▪ Emerging bias of access over
ownership
▪ Car-sharing, space-sharing
and streaming services are
examples —membership is
spiking
▪ New technologies improve
product tracking and
separation
▪ Better supply chain
management makes reverse
logistics feasible
▪ Easy-available apps supporting
the sharing economy

Page 14
Circular Economy – What’s The
Opportunity?
The potential savings for the economy as a whole from the
transition to a circular economy in Europe:
▪ Net material cost savings of 340 - 380 bn USD per year
in the transition scenario and 520 – 630 bn USD per year in
the advanced scenario
The World Economic Forum estimates that 80 per cent of
the US$ 3.2 trillion value of the global consumer goods
sector is lost irrecoverably each year due to the
linear model.
In addition there are estimated benefits in the following
areas:
• Mitigation of price volatility and supply risk
• Sectoral shift and possible employment benefits
• Reduced externalities
• Lasting benefits for a more resilient and innovative
economy
Page 15
What about growth?
16
• Waste = lost value somewhere in the chain = lost
profit
• To harvest these profits = growth potential
• While the linear growth model is based on
exploitation of resources and labour efficiency
gains, the growth in the circular economy will be
based on increased quality in products and
services
• There will be winners and losers in the
transformation to a circular economy, like in any
transformation
• Maybe the circle should be a spiral?
Page 16
Circular Economy – Who is there already?
The Circular Economy 100 is a global innovation platform for building capacity and developing cross company,
cross-sector, pre-competitive collaboration initiatives.
The setup of the CE100 leverages the power of a unique global network and is focused on the development and
execution of tangible initiatives.
The CE100 is one of a number of programs from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, an organization with the mission
of accelerating the transition towards the circular economy.
