12th EAA ANNUAL MEETING

EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF ARCHAEOLOGISTS

Cracow, a historic and spiritual capital of Poland, is easily accessible by air, train or car from every major city in Europe.

The Meeting will be held at the Academy of Physical Education in Cracow. It is set in a nice and spacious campus located about 4 km from the Main Market Square.

Cracow is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Its historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 13th-century merchants' town has Europe's largest market square and numerous historical palaces and churches with their magnificent interiors.

Wawel - the Medieval Royal Castle, once home to the Jagiellonian kings, has survived without major damage.

The Gothic Royal Cathedral - the site of the coronations and burials, overflows with priceless art treasures.

Jagiellonian University, established in 1364 is the oldest university in Poland and second (after Prague) to be founded in Central Europe.

TOUR I - Wielkopolska Province: Poznan Gniezno-Ostrów Lednicki-Biskupin (the fortified settlement from VIII c. BC)

Ostrów Lednicki - Island with ruins of the 10th century castle.

Biskupin - the reconstructed fortified settlement from VIII c. BC

TOUR II - Polish Carpathians: Zakopane-Niedzica-the Dunajec River Gorge (a trip down the river on rafts).

One day trips:

1. Ojców National Park - the Paleolithic cave sites and Neolithic flint mines.

2. The Neolithic flint mine at Krzemionki Opatowskie

3. The Medieval salt mines in Wieliczka and Bochnia

4. The Vistula River Valley near Cracow - palaeogeography and archaeology

Half day trips

1. The Medieval Abbey at Tyniec (a trip by boat)

2. The Wawel Hill - Royal Castle and Cathedral

3. The Old Town and the Jagiellonian University

4. Kazimierz - the Old Jewish Town

5. Memorial and Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau
