The CPD cycle
Reflect
Plan Act
Evaluate
Reflect, Plan, Act and Evaluate
• Reflect:
Think about your work and what you could do to maintain/enhance this area of your work
• Plan:
Identify training to meet the need
• Act:
• Evaluate:
How far did the activity meet the need you expected it to meet?
Phased implementation
• Phasing over 3 years
• Starting with change of year for CPD in 2013
• From January – December
• To October – September

What is an entry on the CPD record?
• An entry equates with something that you’ve learnt
• You can claim more than one entry for the same CPD activity if you learnt more than one thing
• You can also count learning achieved whilst undertaking your role
What can I count?
• Planned activities
• Unplanned activities
Using your appraisals
• Your appraisal is likely to include areas for development
• These follow the CPD cycle and can be used to demonstrate meeting the CILEx CPD requirements
Research and Development
• Research started in September 2011
Purposes of CPD:
• Maintain threshold standard of knowledge
• Develop professional skills
• Maintain and enhance competence in specialist area
Effective CPD
• Most effective when the CPD is determined by the individual
• Counting hours focuses on compliance rather than competence
• A gap in ethics and professionalism training was identified by the Legal Education and Training Review
Why not hours?
• No consideration of competence or development of the individual
• One size fits all
• Tick box exercise
• Does not need to be relevant to practice
If not hours, then what?
• Identifying CPD relevant to you through reflection
• Planning CPD to meet needs
• Evaluating CPD activities when complete
Consultation
• IPS consulted between June and September 2012
• Open for 12 weeks
• 54 responses received
• CILEx responded to the consultation
• They canvassed all members in August 2012 for their views
The CPD Pilot
• This took place between January 2012 and March 2012
• 76 members participated
• Undertook 4 activities – at least 1 planned, 1 unplanned and an ethics activity
Professionalism
1. Refreshing your knowledge and understanding of professional ethics, including the Code of Conduct 2. Improving knowledge of the primary business in which your clients work (business awareness) 3. Developing an understanding of the issues which may affect your clients (social awareness) 4. Developing your client communication skills 5. Improving your skills in dealing with challenging clients 6. Refreshing your knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity issues 7. Improving your time management skills 8. Something else
