Funformation

MAY-SEPTEMBER

The Champaign Park District is a special district of local government with its own financial and legal responsibilities. It is governed by five elected residents of Champaign who give their services to the community. The Park Board holds its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Bresnan Meeting Center, 706 Kenwood Road. Residents are invited to attend and are welcome to make suggestions or comments to improve the programs or facilities offered. The Champaign Park Districts 63 parks total over 670 acres. Thirteen facilities are available for a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Our MissionThe mission of the Champaign Park District is to provide quality parks and recreation for all ages in our community.

As we continue to celebrate 100 years of parks in Champaign, we are proud to bring you another award winning season with new meaning to our Decade of Excellence Strategic Plan 2005-2015. What the District began 6 years ago with facility replacement will continue as your Park District builds a new Leonhard Community Center Centennial Park funded in part with a $2.5 million Park and Recreation Construction Facility Grant. The Virginia Theatre, a recipient of a new Public Museum Grant and a lot of local and legislative support will enter its final stages of renovation including the renovation of the auditorium, upstairs restrooms, the addition of an elevator for accessibility and stage improvements beginning in May. The price tag is huge to restore this historic landmark and donations are continually welcome through our 501c (3) Champaign Parks Foundation. A new park called Sunset Ridge Park complete with tennis, basketball, paths and playground and a new playground at Garden Hills Park are now open for your enjoyment. And when the Sholem Aquatic Center was first built six years ago, the District planned for future improvements by having plumbing in place to add a second slide and water walk. A brand new, first of its kind translucent slide has been added at Sholem and the water walk is under construction for an exciting new summer season. At the same time, the 40 plus year old Spalding Pool will not reopen as it has outlived its usefulness and repair costs are more than new construction. An interlocal agreement with Unit #4 School District will allow us to hold seasonal swim lessons and day camp programs at Centennial High School Pool while we plan for future aquatic needs. On the following pages you will find exciting new opportunities for fitness, camps, sports and cultural opportunities that we hope you will enjoy.

youth Sports goals & objectivesThe philosophy behind the youth sports program is to provide an atmosphere that focuses on fun, opportunity, sportsmanship and instruction. Sports can play a positive role in our childrens development, fostering physical skills and emotional maturity. Our children should have a place where they can have fun participating in organized activities in a healthy, safe environment. We strive to provide quality instruction in the fundamentals of the sport while emphasizing fun and sportsmanship over winning. By creating a positive experience for the children we hope to encourage a lifetime of involvement. You can help. We need the cooperation and assistance of parents and coaches to promote and demonstrate these values.

champaign united Fast Pitch teamsages 10-15 Select programs such as champaign united Fast Pitch are by invitation only. Last year was the inaugural season for the Park District Champaign United Fast Pitch team. Based upon input from coaches the Park District chose twelve 15&U players from within our leagues. Those players continued to play for their respective Park District teams. They also trained separately as a select squad. The team was coached by Jenna Harshbarger (pitcher, St. Ambrose University) and Tess Strang (starting second base, Milliken University). At the end of the season they played in a tournament in Decatur. The idea behind select squads is to provide a more competitive environment with higher level coaching for advanced players.
