Racing to Help Others

By Dawn Berryman, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The word CANCER can be a very scary word. Whether you’re hearing it used to describe your child’s diagnosis or having to explain to your young children that you have it, it’s not an easy thing to hear or share. Unfortunately, too many families in the Mason area have had to deal with this word over the past 10 years.

As scary as a cancer diagnosis is, these families have all been given hope by 20 to 30 years of research that has resulted in much higher survival rates. In some cases, the survival rate has increased by 60%.

For children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common type of childhood cancer, there has been especially good success. A child diagnosed today with ALL has a nearly 90% chance of beating their cancer as com-pared to less than a 20% chance 30 years ago. Much of this research can be attributed to fundraising organizations such as The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Race to AnyplaceThe mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodg-

kin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. They raise money towards their mission through a variety of fundraising campaigns such as their newest one, Race To Anyplace (Race).

The next Race will be held at Mason Community Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 18. It’s is an action-packed, stationary bike event where teams of 4 to 12 riders compete on stationary spin bikes to see who can “ride” the farthest. Every 15 minutes, a new rider jumps on as a new heat begins. A DJ plays pumping music throughout to keep the riders motivated and moving. Complimentary food and drinks are provided to keep everyone fueled.

There are two levels of competition: competitive and friends/family. It’s a great event for supporters of all ages and physical abilities…as long as they can reach the pedals! Riders can spend the entire day at the Community Center or just the time it takes them to complete their heats. And, to help every-one pass the time, Mason Community Center is offering a free day pass for all participants along with half price admission for the participants’ family members. In addition, the Community Center will be offering a special membership promotion to any participants who join the day of the event.

Mason Community EffortsBecause of the number of children and adults who have

been affected by a blood cancer over the past 10 years in the Mason area, LLS has had much fundraising success here. One of the biggest fundraisers is Light The Night, an evening walk where supporters and survivors carry illuminated balloons in honor of, support of, or in memory of their loved ones. This event moved to Mason four years ago and has been growing by leaps and bounds since its arrival. This past fall, it outgrew its original location at the Mason Sports Park and had to move to Mason Municipal Center.

The Honored Teammates of this year’s Race To Anyplace event are, from left, Ken Murawski, Joel Brown, Jennifer Reckers, Maya Collins, Hannah Berryman, Annie Coyle, Vince Hopkins, and Liz Lothrop (not shown). Maya stayed inside to avoid exposure as she recovered from a bone marrow transplant.

The Tri-State chapter’s largest fundraising team was a Mason team, Blazin’ with <3, that raised over $30,000. The schools have done their part as well, spurred on by the num-ber of children in the schools who have been diagnosed over the past few years. In the last three years, Mason High School has raised over $77,000 through the LLS Pasta For Pennies campaign. Last year, the high school’s total of nearly $28,000 earned them 6th place overall in the country! The middle school has also championed the cause, raising over $21,000 since 2009. This school level success shows you the power of kids and how they rally around their peers to do whatever they can to help in times of need.

While these events raise money for LLS, they also help to raise awareness and put faces to blood cancer. Eight mem-bers of the Mason community are the Honored Teammates of this year’s Race To Anyplace event: Maya Collins (3rd grade, diagnosed 4/2011 with AML), Jennifer Reckers (5th grade, diagnosed 1/2002 with ALL), Hannah Berryman (7th grade, diagnosed 12/2002 with ALL), Joel Brown (Junior, diagnosed 6/2008 with ALL), Liz Lothrop (Junior, diagnosed 10/2008 with ALL), Annie Coyle (Senior, diagnosed 3/2006 with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), Vince Hopkins (diagnosed 10/2005 with follicular lymphoma) and Ken Murawski (diagnosed 7/2005 with AML). All have been diagnosed with a blood cancer and are considered either cured or are currently in remission. Each child hero will share a video of their cancer story at Race, throughout the day, to help remind everyone why the money they’ve raised is so important and to show them that it does truly make a difference. Ken and Vince, our adult heroes, will be riding on their respective teams, showing everyone that cancer hasn’t slowed them down.

While no one wants to hear the word CANCER, Mason fami-lies and friends have stepped up to the occasion by raising money and awareness, and showing their love and support to the many families who have. As a mother who has faced the challenges of childhood cancer with my daughter, Hannah, I am forever grateful.

Presenting

Powered by SwimAmerica™Mason Community Center is excited to announce an inno-

vative swim lesson program beginning in February. The new Mason Swim Academy is a learn-to-swim program based on a proven lesson program developed by SwimAmerica.

Why Should Your Child Learn to Swim?

There are three basic reasons motivating people to take swim lessons.Safety. Southwest Ohio has a myriad of activities for you and your family that center around water, from neighborhood ponds to the huge Sunlite Pool at Coney Island, from small streams to the big Ohio River, and from backyard or neighbor-hood swimming pools to entire water parks such as The Beach, the new Soak City at Kings Island, and Great Wolf Lodge’s indoor water park. Most parents agree that a primary reason they want their children to know how to swim is for their own safety. Fitness and Health. Americans everywhere are heeding advice to lead healthier lifestyles. Eating right is only part of it—physical activity is also necessary. Swimming has long been recognized as the most complete form of exercise because it has cardiovascular, skeletal, and neuromuscular benefits.opportunity and Fun. A competent swimmer has a wide variety of water activities from which to choose. Activities are not limited to competitive swim events such as racing, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming. There are also recreational swimming, water skiing, boating, SCUBA div-ing, surfing, sailing, canoeing, fishing, and more. All of these activities are made more enjoyable and less hazardous if you know how to swim and can remove yourself from danger if the unexpected should occur.

SwimAmerica at MasonThe Mason Swim Academy will use a lesson program that was

designed by SwimAmerica™ experts who have coached swim-mers as high as the Olympic competition level. Realizing that both recreational and competitive swimmers all need a basic level of competency, the experts developed a swim program to teach core swim techniques to swimmers of all interests. Over three million people take SwimAmerica lessons each year.

The Mason Swim Academy will divide swimmers into three teaching categories:

Tots (6 to 24 months) and Toddlers (24 to 36 months) – where the goal is to promote a positive response to the water environment. Students will be taught by the parent under the direction of the coach, working toward transitioning to coach-only lessons by the time they are 3 years of age. Teaching will focus on acclimating your infant to the water. Please note that this class does NOT teach your infant or toddler to swim. Supervision of your child will still be necessary around water.

Academy (ages 3 through adult) – the core SwimAmerica program divides the fundamental elements of swimming into ten units known as “stations.” Each station builds upon skills learned at previous stations. Students progress through the stations at their own pace. Advancement criteria have been established to provide the student with clear tests of his or her abilities. Each station serves to motivate the student to achieve beyond his or her own immediate expectations and skills. Those who complete the program can perform six

unique styles of swimming and swim a distance of at least 300 yards without stopping.

In this program, there is no distinction made between “competitive” and “recreational” swimming. Proper techniques of swimming (breathing, body position, movement of the limbs, and timing) have been established as a result of decades of expe-rience and observation. What works best and is enjoyable have been incorporated into the progression through the ten stages.

The Mason ProgramBeginning with the February session, Mason Community

Center will offer learn-to-swim classes through the Mason Swim Academy. At all levels, students will be taught by “coaches” who have been certified in the new lesson format.

For the academy levels, the ten stations on the path to becoming a competent swimmer will include blowing bubbles, floating and gliding, kicking, the crawl stroke, free-style, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, turns, lifetime strokes, and individual medley. Two SwimAmerica programs have been underway in the Manta Rays program for several years. The implementation of the Mason Swim Academy will allow students to seamlessly progress through all levels of the program and become accomplished swimmers.

Participation in the new learn-to-swim program does not require students to participate on the Manta Rays swim team. A competent swimmer uses the same techniques and skills whether for recreational or competitive swimming. The community center is pleased to now be able to help swimmers develop the same core of competency in children and adults of all interests.

Lessons will be 30 minutes long, once a week. Sessions will run for six to eight weeks during the school year, with one les-son per week. The summer format will change to three, 3-week sessions with two lessons per week.

As in the past, lessons will be available to members and non-members through a tiered fee schedule. Registration will not change—it will be available online or in person. If you wish, you may now enroll your child for more than one lesson per week, though we recommend that the lessons be on dif-ferent days of the week. As your child completes the skills at one station, he or she will progress to the next station even if it is in the middle of a session.

The TransitionDuring the winter swim lesson period (ending in February),

a series of parent meetings will be held to introduce the new program and answer your questions. Coaches will be trained and current students will be evaluated to determine which class they should sign up for in the new Mason Swim Academy.

In order to be placed in the correct level, children new to the program can request a swim placement evaluation. If you would like to sign your child up for the February session and are not currently enrolled, please call the Mason Community Center and make an appointment for a free evaluation.

Mason Swim Academy classes begin on February 27. We want you to be comfortable with the new program and encourage you to call the Mason Community Center if you have questions.

powered by SwimAmerica™Mason Community Center is proud to feature the Mason Swim Academy, presenting learn-to-swim instruction based on a proven lesson program developed by SwimAmerica™. Students will be taught by certified coaches as they progress through ten stations of competency.

The techniques for developing good swimming skills are the same whether your goal is to increase safety around water, enjoy better fitness and health, increase opportunities for recreation, or compete by joining a swim team. The SwimAmerica format was developed by experienced Olympic coaches and is offered in cooperation with the Mason Manta Rays swim team, one of the top swim teams of its size in the country. Let the team’s experience help you or your child become a competent swimmer even if you do not expect to swim competitively.

Fitness TipA fitness tip from Kelly Burchett, Wellness Supervisor at Mason Community Center.

How are you doing on your New Year’s resolutions?

Too often, it’s not long after the New Year’s festivities that most people’s resolutions are just hopes from the past. But it’s never too late to revive them!

I am giving you all a resolution to be healthy this 2012. Don’t let one bad meal or one bad workout define who you are for this brand new year. Put them aside and get right back on track.

Sticking to your resolutions is easier than you might think. Here are some tips for staying on track.

• Plan your weekly workouts. Over the weekend, look at your schedule for the coming week. Find the places where your workout fits, or make room to schedule one. Knowing your plan at the beginning of the week can help you work them in instead of waiting to see if you have time. Most times, people say, “I’ll work out tomorrow” and come Sunday, you look back and realize tomorrow never came. Be proactive! Make a plan and let it guide you through the week.

• Plan your weekly meals. If you are like me, you probably find it easier to stop at the store each day and grab what you need or feel like that day. Plan your meals for the week and you’ll find it’s much cheaper and easier for you. Make baked chicken and sweet potatoes on Monday and use the extra chicken for chicken fajitas on Tuesday. Planning your meals—both lunch and dinner—keeps you on track for your week and gets rid of those pesky grocery runs where you end up buying the candy, ice cream, cookies, or discount baked goods because “you’ve had a rough day.”

• You always have time! There is always time for fitness. Even a mother of 5 working fulltime can fit it in. Watching TV? During each commercial, get up and do 10 squats, push-ups, and lunges, and then hold a plank position until they are over. Once that is easy, increase the number. Or run your stairs or step up on a chair during the whole break to get your heart rate up. If you do have time but don’t know where to start, sign up for a free orientation of the fitness center, try the FitQuest Challenge to set up a workout plan, join a class of your choosing, or purchase a session with a personal trainer. Personal trainers will customize a workout just for you based on your goals. There is a huge fear that every trainer will “kill” you during your workout. We won’t—unless you want it!

• Find a mantra or purpose. You have to want to be healthy or it will never work for you. Find something that inspires you to be the best “you” possible and use that to get you out of bed for that 5:50 a.m. cycling class or to turn left to the gym instead of right to go home. My mantra of the moment comes from Dolvett Quice of NBC’s The Biggest Loser ©, “Hard Work: Dedication - Dedication: Hard Work”

You can do it!! We here at Mason Community Center are your biggest cheerleaders. It’s not until we are healthy that we are truly happy, so what are you waiting for?

Check out the Mason Community Center’s Facebook page for a weekly fitness tip, workout move, and healthy recipe to help you keep your new year’s fitness resolutions.

Choosing the Right Group Exercise

ClassesWith nearly one hundred group exercise classes offered

each week at Mason Community Center, it may be a challenge to figure out which classes are right for you. Now there’s help.

Mason Community Center is pleased to offer the free FitQuest Challenge. This new program at the center will help you set your fitness foundation and stay on track with your fitness goals.

First, take our FitQuest Challenge, a 10-minute circuit test. For ten minutes, you will see how many times you can complete the circuit of squats, burpees, bench jumps or step-ups, push-ups, lunges, and crunches. Certified group fitness instructors will demonstrate each of these exercises prior to your test.

After you complete the 10-minute circuit, you will meet with an instructor to have your scores evaluated. You will leave with recommendations for a 4- to 6-week self-guided workout plan that will help you improve your scores. Included in the plan will be recommendations for group fit-ness classes that will help you achieve your goals. Come back for a retest at the end of your plan to see how you improved and get recommendations for the next phase.

The FitQuest Challenge is free to all Mason Community Center members and is appropriate for all fitness levels. For added incentive to stay on your plan, challenge a friend or family member to get their own plan and see who makes the most progress toward a healthier lifestyle!

Yoga is a Total Body Experience

What centuries-old practice can help you increase your flexibility, strength, balance, and sense of peace—even at the most basic levels?

Hatha YogaThe answer is “Hatha Yoga.” Hatha Yoga originated in India

more than 5,000 years ago and has been widely accepted and practiced around the world by men and women of all ages.

“Hatha” refers to any of the physical practices of yoga. It comes from the Sanskrit words “ha,” meaning sun, and “tha,” meaning moon. “Yoga” originated from the Sanskrit word “Yuj,” which means to yoke, or unite.

“Hatha Yoga” refers to all of the varieties of yoga. A direct translation indicates the unity of the sun and moon. On a deeper level, it encompasses universal balance and harmony. In yoga, the goal is to unite or bring ourselves back into bal-ance. It is often said yoga means union of body, breath, mind, and spirit.

The PracticeEach yoga class includes a combination of physical move-

ment and postures, breathing techniques, and some medita-tion to relax and still the mind. Mason Community Center offers a range of yoga classes including gentle yoga, mixed levels, Vinyasa (flow) yoga, yoga flex, and power yoga. While each class has its own emphasis, the basic elements of yoga are incorporated into each format.

If you are new to yoga or prefer a slower paced practice, try Gentle Yoga. For older adults or those with mobility issues, For-ever Fit Yoga was designed to incorporate yoga movements either while seated or using a chair for balance.

For a moderately paced practice, Yoga Mix includes both gentle postures and dynamic flows. Flow (also Vinyasa) Yoga, Yoga Flex, and Sunrise Yoga include more dynamic flows and longer held postures for strength-building. All levels of experi-ence are welcome in these classes.

To add cardio and extra challenge, intermediate to advanced yoga practitioners are encouraged to try Power or Cardio Yoga.

Remember to listen to your body, regardless of your yoga class level. Keep in mind that yoga is an individual practice, not a competition, and practitioners are encouraged to pay attention to how each posture and movement feels and modify accordingly.

BenefitsYoga will help you improve strength, flexibility, and balance.

Practitioners also experience better breathing and improved stress and pain management. Yoga helps tone the body, improves circulation, and offers cardiovascular benefits. The mind begins to notice a sense of presence and inner peace that helps ease reactions to everyday situations, which can lead to better relationships. Both men and women will find yoga a great way to take a break from the day, treat the body, and still the mind.

We encourage you to try it! Please talk with any of the yoga instructors if you have questions or concerns.

When You Join a Yoga ClassSo that you and the entire class can enjoy all the benefits of yoga, our yoga instructors offer these tips:

•  Practice yoga on a relatively empty stomach. Try to eat 2 to 3 hours prior to class.

•  Check in at the turnstiles and get a pass card for the class. Give this card to your yoga instructor to show that you have been counted for the class and have paid the fee. (Yoga classes are free to Premier and day pass holders, but you’ll still need the card.)

•  Plan to arrive at least 5 minutes early. This will allow enough time to set up your mat and any props, such as blocks or straps. You can bring your own or use the ones provided by the community center. Grab a towel, too. You may use this as a “prop” such as an arm extension or eye cover in “shavasana” (final relaxation).

•  By arriving early, you will also have time to communicate any medical conditions or injuries to your instructor, who will use this information to help you modify your practice.

•  Arriving early also allows time to begin to center yourself. Sit quietly on your mat and begin to focus on your breath, shifting your awareness away from everything around you to your breath. This helps slow the activity in your mind and prepares you for your yoga practice.

•  Embrace the quiet!  Please remember to silence all cell phones and watches.

•  If you do arrive late, please enter the room quietly.

•  Remember yoga is a practice, not a performance! Listen to your body. Use caution with new or difficult poses and consider modifications. Stop if you feel any pain.

•  “Shavasana” (guided relaxation) is like dessert; it’s best at the end. However, if you have to leave class early, please situate yourself toward the back of the room and depart quietly so others can enjoy this time.

•  Enjoy yoga with your teens! Regular group exercise yoga classes are open to participants age 12 and over. Occasionally, yoga programs are offered for younger children.

Clinical Exercise ProgramFitness CenterClinical exercise Program Helps You Get Back to Fitness

Are you ready to go to the gym, but there’s an ache or pain preventing you from doing so? Maybe it’s linger-ing issues with an old injury or something that’s been an annoyance for a while. Perhaps you are hesitating because you’re not sure whether exercise will help it or make it worse. The solution may be a more medically-based workout program through the Mason Community Center’s clinical exercise program.

This program pairs you with a certified athletic trainer from TriHealth. The athletic trainer will work with you to design a personalized exercise program to ensure your safe return to exercise and activity. All you need is a referral from your physician describing the issue and releasing you to exercise. The certified athletic trainer will then meet with you to discuss your medical condi-tions and design a program focused on your specific needs. The Community Center offers a variety of facili-ties to help you on your wellness journey, ranging from equipment in the fitness center to the track and warm water therapy pool.

Spring Golf Tip A tip from Andy Horn, golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island

One of the best tips I can give to start the golfing season is to work on your short game. We all will be a little wild off the tee right now, but if you can get up and down a few more times, you will keep that score down.

This time of year, I work really hard on my pitch and roll. I will take my 8 or 7 iron out to the putting green and try to chip balls across the green as low as possible. My key thought is, “every chip is a putt.” If I can get that ball to roll low and true, I will chip a few in and get up and down on most greens that I miss.

Work on keeping your golf ball low and see that chip look like a putt going into the hole.

Good luck and practice that short game!

Maintaining Winter TrainingA tip from Paul Heintz, owner of Mojo Running. Visit Mojo Running’s kiosk in the Symbiosis store at Mason Community Center or the main Mojo Running store in West Chester.

Marathon training is hard enough, and winter months add another level of difficulty. Mileage is no longer your only concern; there is the weather, daylight, and a number of other factors to take into account. Here are some tips for running through the winter. Get most of them right and you won’t miss a beat when spring race season arrives!

Balancing Indoor and Outdoor TrainingWith shortened daylight hours and iffy weather, there is a strong temptation to fire up your gym membership and start logging treadmill miles. While running indoors is typically safer, it’s also not as dynamic or as challenging as running on the open road.

Find your ideal mix by planning a minimum of two outdoor runs a week. These should be your long run and your recovery run, due to the minimal intensity involved.

Your long run needs to be done outside unless you live in extreme weather conditions. No cutting corners here. Try running midday and use the early morning for a core or flexibility session. In the winter you and your shoes will need a longer warm up. Be patient and let your body get into a groove.

When and How To Use the TreadmillIf your long runs and recovery runs are outside, move your track/interval training to the treadmill. Sure it’s mentally harder, but you’ll be guaranteed to run at speed without obstacles like ice or slush. Here are a few tips to make the most out of your treadmill time:

• Train with pace, not heart rate: Without external factors such as hills and wind, your heart rate will be lower on a treadmill. Following a heart rate only plan will result in running harder than you might have otherwise done.

• Run with at least 1% incline: Running with no grade is similar to running on a slight downward slope. Kick it up to a minimum of one percent to mimic your normal running style. As you gain strength and fitness, consider bumping up your incline.

• Change is good: Running in a one directional plane with zero elevation change stresses the same muscles the same way the whole time, every time. Counteract this muscular complacency by manipulating the grade periodically and change the pace to stimulate different muscle groups during your run.

Hydration and FuelingDespite the colder temperatures, your hydration needs are much the same. You may not feel the outward signs of your work (sweat and salt), but you still need proper hydration.

Eat and drink on your winter runs--especially the long ones--just as you would in warmer weather. This will take discipline, so be ready. A well-fueled run is the first step to proper recovery and in some cases means the difference between recovering smartly or binge eating following your run. On really cold days, be sure to keep your fluids under your outer layer so they don’t freeze.

Lastly, find a running partner or running group for motivation. For more information on how to run through the winter or running groups head over to Mojo Running.
