Chapter 1: Important information

Certified InstallationRaymarine recommends certified installation by aRaymarine approved installer. A certified installationqualifies for enhanced product warranty benefits.Contact your Raymarine dealer for further details,and refer to the separate warranty document packedwith your product.

Warning: Product installation andoperationThis product must be installed andoperated in accordance with theinstructions provided. Failure to do socould result in personal injury, damageto your vessel and/or poor productperformance.

Warning: Potential ignition sourceThis product is NOT approved for use inhazardous/flammable atmospheres. DoNOT install in a hazardous/flammableatmosphere (such as in an engine roomor near fuel tanks).

Warning: Product groundingBefore applying power to this product,ensure it has been correctly grounded, inaccordance with the instructions in thisguide.

Warning: Positive ground systemsDo not connect this unit to a system whichhas positive grounding.

Warning: Power supply voltageConnecting this product to a voltagesupply greater than the specifiedmaximum rating may cause permanentdamage to the unit. Refer to the Technicalspecification section for voltage rating.

Warning: Switch off power supplyEnsure the vessel’s power supply isswitched OFF before starting to install thisproduct. Do NOT connect or disconnectequipment with the power switched on,unless instructed in this document.

Warning: Ensure all equipment hasisolated power supplyThis product features an isolated powersupply. To prevent potential damage toequipment, Raymarine recommends thatany external equipment connected to thisproduct also features an isolated powersupply.

Warning: High voltageThis product contains high voltage.Adjustments require specialized serviceprocedures and tools only available toqualified service technicians. There areno user serviceable parts or adjustments.The operator should never remove thecover or attempt to service the product.

Warning: Transducer cablesDo not remove the transducer cable whilstthe product is powered on, doing so cancause sparks. If the transducer cable isaccidently removed whilst the product ispowered on, switch the product's poweroff, replace the cable and then switch thepower back on.

Warning: Sonar operation• NEVER operate the sonar with thevessel out of the water.

• NEVER touch the transducer face whenthe sonar is powered on.

• SWITCH OFF the sonar if divers arelikely to be within 7.6 m (25 ft) of thetransducer.

Caution: Do not cut transducercables• Cutting the transducer cable severelyreduces sonar performance. If thecable is cut, it must be replaced, itcannot be repaired.

• Cutting the transducer cable willvoid the warranty and invalidate theEuropean CE mark.

Caution: Service and maintenanceThis product contains no user serviceablecomponents. Please refer all maintenanceand repair to authorized Raymarinedealers. Unauthorized repair may affectyour warranty.

Water ingressWater ingress disclaimerAlthough the waterproof rating capacity of thisproduct meets the stated IPX standard (refer to theproduct’s Technical Specification), water intrusionand subsequent equipment failure may occur if theproduct is subjected to commercial high-pressurewashing. Raymarine will not warrant productssubjected to high-pressure washing.

EMC installation guidelinesRaymarine equipment and accessories conform tothe appropriate Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)regulations, to minimize electromagnetic interferencebetween equipment and minimize the effect suchinterference could have on the performance of yoursystemCorrect installation is required to ensure that EMCperformance is not compromised.

Note: In areas of extreme EMC interference,some slight interference may be noticed on theproduct. Where this occurs the product and thesource of the interference should be separated bya greater distance.

For optimum EMC performance we recommendthat wherever possible:• Raymarine equipment and cables connected toit are:– At least 1 m (3 ft) from any equipmenttransmitting or cables carrying radio signals e.g.VHF radios, cables and antennas. In the caseof SSB radios, the distance should be increasedto 7 ft (2 m).

– More than 2 m (7 ft) from the path of a radarbeam. A radar beam can normally be assumedto spread 20 degrees above and below theradiating element.

• The product is supplied from a separate batteryfrom that used for engine start. This is important toprevent erratic behavior and data loss which canoccur if the engine start does not have a separatebattery.

• Raymarine specified cables are used.• Cables are not cut or extended, unless doing so isdetailed in the installation manual.

Note: Where constraints on the installationprevent any of the above recommendations,always ensure the maximum possible separationbetween different items of electrical equipment, toprovide the best conditions for EMC performancethroughout the installation

Suppression ferritesRaymarine cables may be fitted with suppressionferrites. These are important for correct EMCperformance. If a ferrite has to be removed for anypurpose (e.g. installation or maintenance), it must bereplaced in the original position before the productis used.Use only ferrites of the correct type, supplied byRaymarine authorized dealers.Where an installation requires multiple ferrites to beadded to a cable, additional cable clips should beused to prevent stress on the connectors due to theextra weight of the cable.

Connections to other equipmentRequirement for ferrites on non-Raymarine cablesIf your Raymarine equipment is to be connectedto other equipment using a cable not supplied byRaymarine, a suppression ferrite MUST always beattached to the cable near the Raymarine unit.

Declaration of conformityRaymarine UK Ltd. declares that this product iscompliant with the essential requirements of EMCdirective 2004/108/EC.The original Declaration of Conformity certificatemay be viewed on the relevant product page atwww.raymarine.com.

Product disposalDispose of this product in accordance with theWEEE Directive.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment(WEEE) Directive requires the recycling of wasteelectrical and electronic equipment. Whilst theWEEE Directive does not apply to some Raymarineproducts, we support its policy and ask you to beaware of how to dispose of this product.

2.3 Product overview

CP100 product overviewThe CP100 is a CHIRP sonar module withDownVision capabilities. In conjunction with acompatible multifunction display, the CP100 providesa detailed view of the water’s bottom structure,enabling you to identify fish and other objects in thewater underneath your vessel.

2.5 CHIRP DownVisionTM overviewDownVisionTM produces a wide–angle side-to-sidebeam and a thin fore-to-aft beam. The coverage ofthe DownVisionTM beam is a water column directlybeneath and to the sides of the vessel.

2.6 CHIRP SideVision™ overviewSideVision™ interprets signals from a pair ofside-looking transducers and builds up a detailedunderwater view as your vessel moves forward.The transducers send pulses of sound waves intothe water on each side of your vessel, and recordthe sound waves that reflect off the bottom, and offobjects on the bottom or suspended in the watercolumn. The received echoes are affected by thebottom material (for example mud, gravel or rock),and by any other objects in their path (for examplecables on the sea floor, bridge piers, wrecks, shoalsor fish).SideVision™ produces two wide–angle side-to-sidebeams, each with a thin fore-to-aft beam. Thecoverage of the SideVision™ beams is a swath oneach side of the vessel.

SideVision™ images are constructed line-by-line,similar to the way a television picture is composedof many horizontal lines. Each successive pingfrom the SideVision™ transducer adds a new lineof image data to the top of your display. Each newline shows sonar returns from both the port andstarboard sides of your vessel.As new lines are added with each successiveping, older data gradually scrolls down the display,building up a detailed image of the water column andsea floor to the sides of your vessel. If your vesselmaintains the same bearing and speed for a periodof time, you can interpret the image as a plan of thesea floor along your vessel’s course.The illustration also identifies examples of featuresthat may be visible in SideVision™ images:• Water: close to your vessel, the SideVision™sonar beams may not interact with any solidobjects in the water column until they hit the seafloor. The water column close to your vessel isdisplayed as a dark band in the image. The abruptchange to a lighter section in the image indicateswhere the sea floor is first detected with each ping.

• Bait ball: objects in the water column close to yourvessel may be detected before the SideVision™beams hit the sea floor. In this example, a bait ball

is shown within the water column, at a distance ofapproximately 30 feet from the vessel.

• Vegetation: objects in contact with the sea floorthat are close to your vessel may be clearly visiblein the image at the point where the SideVision™beams hit the sea floor. In this example, theshapes in the image indicate vegetation attachedto the sea floor.

• Structure: the lighter regions of the SideVision™image represent the sea floor. It may be possibleto detect differences in the bottom material (forexample, where an area of mud meets an areaof gravel) as well as solid structures such aspipelines and piers. Larger solid structures, andsea floor relief, may reveal an area of shadowdirected away from your vessel.

3.8 Warnings and cautionsImportant: Before proceeding, ensure that youhave read and understood the warnings andcautions provided in the Chapter 1 Importantinformation section of this document.

3.9 General location requirementsImportant considerations when choosing a suitablelocation for your product.This product is suitable for mounting above or belowdecks.The product should be mounted where it will be:• protected from physical damage and excessivevibration.

• well ventilated and away from heat sources.• away from any potential ignition source such as anengine room, near fuel tanks or a gas locker.

When choosing a location for the product,consider the following points to ensure reliable andtrouble-free operation:• Access — there must be sufficient space toenable cable connections to the product, avoidingtight bends in the cable.

• Diagnostics — the product must be mounted ina location where the diagnostics LED is easilyvisible.

Note: Not all products include a diagnosticsLED. Refer to the Chapter 6 System checksand troubleshooting for more information.

• Electrical interference — the product should bemounted far enough away from any equipmentthat may cause interference such as motors,generators and radio transmitters / receivers.

• Magnetic compass — refer to the Compasssafe distance section in this document for adviceon maintaining a suitable distance between thisproduct and any compasses on your vessel.

• Power — to keep cable runs to a minimum, theproduct must be located as close as possible tothe vessel’s dc power supply.

• Mounting surface — ensure the product isadequately supported on a secure surface. Referto the weight information provided in the Technicalspecification for this product and ensure that theintended mounting surface is suitable for bearingthe product weight. Do NOT mount units or cutholes in places which may damage the structureof the vessel.

Compass safe distanceTo prevent potential interference with the vessel'smagnetic compasses, ensure an adequate distanceis maintained from the product.When choosing a suitable location for the productyou should aim to maintain the maximum possibledistance from any compasses. Typically this distanceshould be at least 1 m (3 ft) in all directions. Howeverfor some smaller vessels it may not be possible tolocate the product this far away from a compass. Inthis situation, when choosing the installation locationfor your product, ensure that the compass is notaffected by the product when it is in a powered state.

4.1 General cabling guidance

Cable types and lengthIt is important to use cables of the appropriate typeand length• Unless otherwise stated use only standard cablesof the correct type, supplied by Raymarine.

• Ensure that any non-Raymarine cables are of thecorrect quality and gauge. For example, longerpower cable runs may require larger wire gaugesto minimize voltage drop along the run.

Routing cablesCables must be routed correctly, to maximizeperformance and prolong cable life.• Do NOT bend cables excessively. Whereverpossible, ensure a minimum bend diameter of 200mm (8 in) / minimum bend radius of 100 mm (4 in).

• Protect all cables from physical damage andexposure to heat. Use trunking or conduit wherepossible. Do NOT run cables through bilges ordoorways, or close to moving or hot objects.

• Secure cables in place using tie-wraps or lacingtwine. Coil any extra cable and tie it out of the way.

• Where a cable passes through an exposedbulkhead or deckhead, use a suitable watertightfeed-through.

• Do NOT run cables near to engines or fluorescentlights.

Always route data cables as far away as possiblefrom:• other equipment and cables,• high current carrying ac and dc power lines,• antennae.

Caution: Pulling cablesDo NOT use cords or ropes, attachedto cable connectors, to pull cablesthrough restricted apertures (e.g. as inbulkheads), as this could cause damageto cables.

Strain reliefEnsure adequate strain relief is provided. Protectconnectors from strain and ensure they will not pullout under extreme sea conditions.

Circuit isolationAppropriate circuit isolation is required forinstallations using both AC and DC current:• Always use isolating transformers or a separatepower-inverter to run PC’s, processors, displays

and other sensitive electronic instruments ordevices.

• Always use an isolating transformer with WeatherFAX audio cables.

• Always use an isolated power supply when usinga 3rd party audio amplifier.

• Always use an RS232/NMEA converter withoptical isolation on the signal lines.

• Always make sure that PC’s or other sensitiveelectronic devices have a dedicated power circuit.

Cable shieldingEnsure that all data cables are properly shieldedthat the cable shielding is intact (e.g. hasn’t beenscraped off by being squeezed through a tight area).

Cable ferrite installationYour product may be supplied with cable ferrites. Toensure EMC Compliance, any supplied ferrites mustbe fitted to the cables according to the followinginstructions.

Power cable extensionThe product is supplied with a power cable, whichcan be extended if required.• The power cable for each unit in your systemshould be run as a separate, single length of2-wire cable from the unit to the vessel's battery ordistribution panel.

• Raymarine recommends a minimum wire gaugeof 18AWG (0.82 mm2) for any length of cableextension.

• Regardless of the length of the cable extension,any cable used should be capable of achieving aminimum voltage at the unit of 10.8 V with a fullyflat battery at 11 V.

Power distributionRaymarine recommends that all power connectionsare made via a distribution panel.• All equipment must be powered from a breaker orswitch, with appropriate circuit protection.

• Refer to the Breakers, fuses and circuit protectionsection for specific fuse and thermal breakerratings for this product.

Grounding — Dedicated drain wireThe power cable supplied with this product includesa dedicated shield (drain) wire for connection to avessel's RF ground point.It is important that an effective RF ground isconnected to the system. A single ground pointshould be used for all equipment. The unit can begrounded by connecting the shield (drain) wire ofthe power cable to the vessel's RF ground point.On vessels without an RF ground system the shield(drain) wire should be connected directly to thenegative battery terminal.The dc power system should be either:• Negative grounded, with the negative batteryterminal connected to the vessel's ground.

• Floating, with neither battery terminal connectedto the vessel's ground

Warning: Positive ground systemsDo not connect this unit to a system whichhas positive grounding.

4.4 Transducer connections

Warning: Transducer cablesDo not remove the transducer cable whilstthe product is powered on, doing so cancause sparks. If the transducer cable isaccidently removed whilst the product ispowered on, switch the product's poweroff, replace the cable and then switch thepower back on.

Caution: Do not cut transducercables• Cutting the transducer cable severelyreduces sonar performance. If thecable is cut, it must be replaced, itcannot be repaired.

• Cutting the transducer cable willvoid the warranty and invalidate theEuropean CE mark.

6.1 Initial power on testOnce the unit has been correctly installed check thatit is operating correctly.After powering on, the unit will take approximately 50seconds to start up. From powering on through tonormal operation, the LED status indicator should begreen. If the LED status indicator is not green thenrefer to the troubleshooting section of this handbook.Open the Fishfinder application on your connectedmultifunction display and ensure that it is operatingcorrectly.

Switching the active sonar moduleIf you have multiple sonar modules on your networkyou can select which sonar module will be active inthe Fishfinder application.From the Fishfinder application:1. Select Menu.2. Select Sounder:

A list of available sonar modules is displayed.3. Select the Sonar module from the list that you

want to display in the Fishfinder application.

6.3 Sonar troubleshootingProblems with the sonar and their possible causes and solutions are described here.

6.4 Sonar crosstalk interferenceThere are 2 types of potential sonar crosstalkinterference in a Raymarine sonar system:1. SideVision sonar crosstalk interference2. Multiple sonar crosstalk interferenceThe types of crosstalk interference that youmay experience in your system depend on thecombination and type of sonar equipment installed,and the way in which the equipment has beeninstalled.SideVision sonar crosstalkinterference

Multiple sonar crosstalkinterference

Due to the high sensitivityof SideVision transducers,you may experience someminor crosstalk interferencebetween the left and rightreceiving channels in areasof strong target returns.Examples of strong targetreturns include solid objectssuch as underwater bridgestructure. This interferenceshows up in the Fishfinderapplication as subtlereflections from the rightsonar image displayed inthe left sonar image, or viceversa.

When using multiple sonarmodules and transducersoperating in overlappingfrequency ranges, you mayexperience some crosstalkinterference between theranges. This interference isdisplayed in the Fishfinderapplication as vertical “raindrops” throughout the watercolumn. These vertical “raindrops” indicate that 2 sonarmodules are operating inclose frequency proximity toone another.

SideVision sonar crosstalk interferenceCrosstalk interference is expected behavior in a highsensitivity device such as a SideVision transducer,and is not indicative of a fault with your transducer orsonar module.

Reducing multiple sonar crosstalkinterferenceCrosstalk interference in systems with multiple sonarmodules and transducers is the result of a numberof factors, including installation, operation, andenvironment.• Choose an equipment combination thatminimizes overlapping frequencies. Whereverpossible, choose to use sonar modules andtransducers that operate in different frequencyranges (“Channels”), for example CP100 andCP300 sonar modules and CPT-100 and B744Vtransducers. This will help to ensure that eachcomponent is operating in a distinct relativefrequency range – for example, a “high” frequencyrange for the CP100 and a “low” frequency rangefor the CP300.

• Only use the sonar channels that you reallyneed. Although it is possible to run multiple sonar

modules simultaneously in a Raymarine system, itmay not always be necessary to do so. If you arein a scenario that requires only one sonar moduleto be active at a time, disable any other sonarmodules by changing the Fishfinder applicationpane to a single one which only displays the outputfrom one sonar module. Alternatively, disable theping for any unused sonar modules by selectingMENU > Channel > Ping > OFF in the Fishfinderapplication.

• Identify the sonar module and transducer thatis causing the interference. To do this, disablethe ping or remove the power for one of the sonarmodules in your system. If the interference in theFishfinder application disappears immediately,you now know which device is causing theinterference. If the interference doesn’t disappear,repeat the exercise again with the other sonarmodule(s) in your system, one at a time. Once youknow which device is causing the interference,proceed with the following methods to reduce theinterference from the relevant device.

• Adjust the Interference Rejection Filter. Thedefault setting for all Raymarine MFDs is “Auto”.Changing this setting to “High” might help toreduce interference (MENU > Setup > SounderSetup > Interference Rejection). Note that theInterference Rejection Filter setting is not availablefor all sonar modules.

• Decrease the power output of the interferingtransducer. Adjusting the “Power Mode” inthe Sensitivity Settings in the MFD’s Fishfinderapplication can help to minimize the presenceof crosstalk interference (MENU > SensitivitySettings > Power Mode). Note that the PowerMode setting is not available for all transducers.

• Ensure that you have a common RF groundpoint for all electrical equipment on yourvessel. On vessels without an RF ground system,ensure all product drain wires (where available)are connected directly to the negative batteryterminal. Ineffective RF grounding can causeelectrical interference which may in turn result insonar crosstalk interference.

• Increase the physical distance between yoursonar modules. Electrical interference may beoccurring between a cable on one sonar module,and a cable on a different sonar module. Ensurethat your sonar modules are physically located asfar away from each other as possible.

• Increase the physical distance between yoursonar transducers. Electrical and / or acousticinterference may be occurring between thedifferent transducers in your system. Ensure thatyour transducers are physically located as faraway from each other as possible.

Note: Given the effort and potential difficultiesinvolved in relocating sonar equipment, it shouldonly be considered as a last resort when you judgethe interference to be a significant problem whichcannot be resolved using the methods describedabove.

Note: Due to physical size and other constraintsthat vary from vessel to vessel, it may notbe possible to completely eliminate crosstalkinterference from your system. However, thiswill not impede your ability to benefit from thefull capabilities of your sonar system. Being ableto easily identify the way in which interferenceis displayed in the Fishfinder application cansometimes be the best and easiest route to dealingwith it.

6.6 Resetting the sonar moduleYou can use the reset function on a compatibleRaymarine multifunction display to restore the sonarmodule to its factory default settings.In the fishfinder application:1. 7.1 Routine checksThe following periodic checks should be made:• Examine cables for signs of damage, such aschafing, cuts or nicks.

7.3 Transducer care and cleaningGrowth can collect on the bottom of the transducer,this can reduce performance. To prevent the build-upof sea growth, coat the transducer with a thin layerof water-based antifouling paint, available fromyour local marine dealer. Reapply paint every 6months or at the beginning of each boating season.Certain smart transducers have restrictions on whereantifouling paint is applied. Please consult yourdealer.

Note: Transducers with a temperature sensor maynot work properly if painted.

Note: Never use ketone-based paint. Ketonescan attack many plastics, possibly damaging thesensor.

Note: Never use spray paint on your transducer.Spraying incorporates tiny air bubbles, and amarine transducer cannot transmit properlythrough air.

Use a soft cloth and mild household detergent toclean the transducer. If the fouling is severe, removethe growth with a tough cleaning pad, such as agreen Scotch BriteTM pad for example. Be careful toavoid scratching the face of the transducer.

Note: Harsh cleaning solvents such as acetoneWILL damage the transducer.
