What is 5Ws (Activity Mapping Matrix) for?

The 5Ws tool (Who does What, Where, When and for Whom) is designed for various functions that support information management,

which is critical for effective humanitarian response. For the purpose of this exercise, 5Ws is used only for mapping and monitoring

the Sector interventions and achievements.

The tool helps in collecting data on the operational presence and results achieved (outputs) of Child Protection (CP) actors in Cox’s Bazar.

The data is analysed to produce reports on response status, gaps, overlaps, etc. This analysis is circulated to the Child Protection Sub-

Sector.

The tool is used to collect and analyse data for the "coverage and reach" component of the CP response monitoring initiative in Cox’s

Bazar.

Why is the mapping exercise important? The mapping exercise allows the child protection actors to:

Gain a clear understanding of the child protection interventions carried out by organizations working in different locations, as well as their

target groups.

It provides the structure for a common and systematic information sharing process.

Provides real time analysis of the child protection response for effective planning and monitoring.

Reporting Frequency The reporting frequency will be once a week, in order to feed into the Sub-Sector and ISCG reporting requirements. The weekly reminder

is send to Child Protection partners by the Sub-Sector coordination team.

How to fill the matrix: Remember that 1 row = 1 organization carrying out 1 Activity in 1 location for several beneficiaries (girls, boys, women and men).

The matrix should be filled by the implementing partner working with the in need population directly in the field, and not by the supporting

agencies (unless an agency is directly implementing). In case the Programme / Technical Partner is collaborating with a local CBO to

implement on its behalf, the reporting organization (Programme / Technical Partner) to the supporting agency (financial and/or technical

partners) could support filling of the mapping matrix for submission.

- Example 1: Child Fund Alliance (Programme / Technical Partner – column B) is implementing an activity in collaboration with CHAD,

a national NGO (implementing partner – column C) with financial support from UNICEF (Financial and/or Technical partner – column

H). Child Fund Alliance will fill in the matrix capturing achievements of their implementing partners.

- Example 2: UNICEF is implementing an activity (Programme / Technical Partner – column D) with the Government (implementing

partner – column B). UNICEF can support filling of the matrix.

- Example 3: CHAD, a national NGO is implementing an activity (Programme / Technical Partner – column D) directly, with no other

sub-grantee / implementing partner (column B) with funding from USAID (Financial and/or Technical partner – column H). CHAD will

fill in the matrix.

The Matrix is what the Child Protection actors are supposed to fill. The Matrix looks as below:

All fields are mandatory except the following:
