BUUNJI ABORIGINAL

CONFERENCE

This week we were very honoured to have

two of our students invited to speak at the

2013 Buunji Aboriginal Conference in

Sydney. Nicola Carter and Lindsay Munro

were two of only six students who were

invited to present their speech from the

NAIDOC Public Speaking Competition

which was held earlier this year. They

presented their speech on the History of

the Yirrkali Bark Petitions to a packed

audience of over 600 people at the

Sydney Conference and Convention

Centre on Wednesday.

Presented to the audience by author Anita

Heiss, Nicola and Lindsay proved to once

again be exceptional representatives of

Cowra Public School. Delegates to the

conference commented on their poise

and confidence and on how well they

understood the content and ramifications

of their topic. Cowra Public School has

once again proved to be outstanding in its

endeavours.

LIVE LIFE WELL AT SCHOOL

Cowra Public has been involved in the Live Life Well at School

program for a number of years now. This is a joint initiative shared by

the Department of Health and the Department of Education which is

aimed at increasing healthy habits in school children and reducing

childhood obesity. Mrs Oborn and I have recently attended a two

day workshop in Bathurst which was an opportunity to learn about

new resources, research and initiatives available to our school. The

program includes “Crunch & Sip”, healthy canteen policies,

compulsory PE and sport K-6 and the Fundamental Movement Skills

program, kitchen gardens, nutrition education etc.

As this is an ongoing program I am looking forward to updating our

school community through the newsletter twice each term. All

parents and community members are most welcome to contact me

with suggestions and ideas or questions regarding the program.

Looking forward to Living Life Well at Cowra Public School.

KITCHEN GARDEN

Our kitchen gardens are in and growing well! The Primary Garden

Club has also been established and so far our volunteers have done

a wonderful job. There are two garden beds in the Primary

playground and two in the Infants playground and with the generous

assistance of Bunnings we have planted corn, bok choy, capsicum,

celery, tomatoes, basil, zucchinis and lettuce. We are looking forward

to sharing our vegies with the canteen and making good use of them

for Crunch & Sip. The next step in the Kitchen Garden plan will be to

purchase a compost bin and small bins or buckets suitable for use in

classrooms each day. We already have a worm farm which the staff

are feeding with their scraps and we are hoping composting will be

beneficial to our little garden. Following that, fruit trees are next on

the agenda and will hopefully be planted in the garden beds

adjacent to the canteen area above the Primary grass area.

Again, all assistance and suggestions are gratefully accepted!

Coming soon: Waste free Wednesdays! More information soon.
