During the NAIDOC Public Speaking competition, we were also excited to welcome Luke Carroll to our school, whom many of our students would recognise as one of the stars from ABC’s Play School. Luke is an ambassador for the NAIDOC Public Speaking competition and took some time to speak to students and staff about his life as an actor. He was very impressed with the questions our students asked, and by the wonderful Wiradjuri singing from KW. Thank you to Mr Dean Murray for his extensive work in organising this competition each year. A wonderful night was had on Wednesday at the P&C Movie Night fundraiser. Students and parents braved the chilly conditions outside and snuggled up in the CPS Hall with blankets and pillows to watch “Moana”, whilst snacking on some delicious movie food provided by the P&C. Thank you to all who contributed to make the evening a success! Our Girls soccer team will be battling against Canowindra Public School today in the next round of the PSSA knockout. Thank you to Miss Gorham who will be coaching the girls and accompanying them to Canowindra. Good luck also to our girls and boys who are participating in the Western Region Soccer trials tomorrow. Mr Garlick will be managing the Girls Soccer trials in Cowra and Mrs Baratto from Mulyan PS will be looking after the boys in Orange. Best of luck to all athletes; I’m sure the experience will be an enjoyable one. Tomorrow Semester 1 student reports will be distributed. Having read through each set of class reports, I am very proud of the effort and achievements our students have made during the past two terms. Please ensure you take the time to sit with your child and share their school report with them. Stage 1 parents will have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress with their class teacher during parent/teacher interviews next week. Stage 2 and 3 parent/teacher interviews were held earlier this term, however if parents would like a follow up meeting with their child’s teacher please contact the office to arrange an appointment. Next week our school will be celebrating NAIDOC Week with a wide range of activities and experiences planned. A timetable of events is included in this week’s newsletter. We will be holding our school flag-raising ceremony at 9:30am on Monday morning and community members are warmly invited to attend. With bush tucker tasting, art competitions, an Aboriginal artefacts talk, dancing, traditional Indigenous games and the annual Year 6 NAIDOC Sports Challenge against Mulyan, it is sure to be a busy and exciting week. We will be holding a combined K-6 NAIDOC assembly next Thursday 29th June at 2pm in the Hall and all parents are welcome to attend. Lastly, a big congratulations to Ms Prue James and her partner Johnno on the birth of their baby boy Lachy last Thursday night! We look forward to meeting him very soon! NAIDOC PUBLIC SPEAKING CHALLENGE On Monday this week, Cowra Public School competed in the Lachlan Challenge of the NAIDOC public speaking competition. This competition is held annually and the topic for this year's competition followed the 2017 NAIDOC week theme 'Our Languages Matter'. Cowra Public were represented by Tahlee-Pearl Beckett and Jake Roberts, and Niamh Webster and Josh James. This level of the competition included schools from around the Lachlan area including Forbes, Parkes, Canowindra and Koorawatha, and our students got to hear some interesting and entertaining speeches from all the other teams. We were thrilled to find out at the conclusion of the competition that our teams had won both first and second place, with Niamh and Josh narrowly winning over Jake and Tahlee-Pearl by only a few points. The adjudicator commented on both our team's confidence, appearance and delivery, and the way in which they engaged with the audience. The teams now progress to Dubbo for the regional finals in August. Thanks to the students and their families for their commitment to this competition and the hours of practise they have done to produce these fine results. Well done!! Mrs Long, Public Speaking Coach.
