I know this sounds corny, but what brings me the most joy in my professional life is making other people successful. If I’ve developed and implemented my strategy in new and exciting ways, I am particularly enthusiastic. Since creativity is rarely achieved in a vacuum because we all draw inspiration from somewhere, I get the most joy from collaboration. I love learning from others and I love the process of creating a successful campaign with coworkers – teamwork is essential! When you bring together a group of people who work in tandem, success is particularly rewarding for me. My children and husband, cooking big family dinners, learning something new and working out also brings me joy!

Donna DeMatteo develops and executes marketing and public relations strategies for all sorts of industries. She has worked for large ad agencies, corporations and non-profits. Four years ago, she started DDM Marketing Partners.

What brings you joy?

Watching my kids, nieces and nephews grow up brings me joy. I get daily inspiration from working in the city and living in the country. I love good music and good coffee. I also draw joy from anticipating the next fish on the line or deer in the woods. There’s great joy in God’s grace which is free and abundant.

Jamy Kunjappu is a 3D visualization artist who owns and operates Enhance 3D. He combines his love for art, photography and design to help his clients bring their creative ideas to visual reality. When he’s not creating renderings, he develops websites, helps his high energy wife find her cell phone, corrals his five children and continues on his quest to create the perfect cup of coffee.

What brings you joy?

“I love good music and good coffee.”

Community-driven workspace engages and attracts industry leaders within emerging markets. Drawn by the collaborative partnership, networking and professional and creative development opportunities, members exchange skill sets, learn from one another and foster their community.

“We needed a creative outlet,” admitted Julia Sentman, Action House founder. “We were the first coworking space in Heidelberg. Being the first brought us quite a bit of positive attention.”

Five years after their grand opening at their previous location, Action House recently opened a studio space. Currently, Action House’s 1,500 square foot facility and staff of 12 serves roughly

30 people. However, events attract anywhere from 6 to 120 attendees. Action House hosts a variety of courses, creative workshops, art exhibitions and concerts.

“The coworking space is used by people representing perhaps a dozen different small businesses or self-employed, including teachers, musicians, urban developers, architects and people involved in other creative industries,” continued Julia.

“The attributes that make Action House special are the same attributes that make it hard to define or describe, even for our founding members,” said Julia. “Actively working in areas like art, culture, creativity, education, business, community building and social entrepreneurship makes us diverse and unique.”10

Action House’s ethics have attracted industry leaders and city officials interested in cultivating community spaces.

“Consider the following,” started Julia. “A successful business woman takes a sewing course not because she wants to learn to sew -- perhaps she already knows how. It’s not that she wants to sew a specific article of clothing or handbag. It’s not about what she is creating in front of her; it’s about what Action House is creating within her that draws her to us. She has the opportunity to rejuvenate from her soul-stealing 9-to-5 and find inspiration for new challenges and endeavors.”

The Candy Factory is pleased to feature Action House! For more information, please visit Action House at www.actionhouse.org.

Mike Brady is an instructor at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in the Graphic Communications and Printing Technology Department. He likes to tinker and figure things out – everything from figuring out how to craft a message or manage color on press. Finding that one missing piece that makes everything else function as it should is a rush for him. In his interaction with students, he does this everyday. He helps his students identify the gap of what’s happening compared to what should be happening. He gets to help create problem solvers.Outside of the classroom, he’s often building forts and going to parks with his two sons and wife. He’ll never pass on a flea market.

The Graphic Communications and Printing Technology major is a two-year associates program that focuses on both design and print production. The diverse curriculum includes everything from graphic and web design to color management and commercial printing. This diversity allows students to find employment in various areas of the industry. Our alumni work in the fields of design, email marketing, variable data, photo editing, screen printing, commercial printing and bindery. The program is about identifying what excites students, and encouraging and equipping them to go after it.

We whole-heartedly believe that learning comes from doing. It can be messy and difficult, but that is part of the process. The students spend more than four hours each day in the lab, which allows ample time for them to become immersed in a project. While each day starts with a discussion or lesson, the majority of the time is spent in the lab working on assignments that cover all aspects of design and print.
