Recently at a PTG meeting, I shared the highlights from our MCA tests (the state ac- countability assess- ment). While the scores are tentative, so far it appears that our 5th grade students increased their proficiency by nine percentage points (up to 61%) and our 4th grad- ers increased by four percentage points (to 56%) in reading. In math both 3rd and 4th grade students are above the district average for proficiency levels (68 and 64%, respectively). I also shared that our behavior referrals and suspensions have sig- nificantly decreased from last year. We have so many reasons to celebrate! Dear Cowern Family and Friends, As the end of the school year nears, we like to reflect on the year and think ahead to the future! Recently at a PTG meeting, I shared the highlights from our MCA tests (the state ac-countability assess-ment). While the scores are tentative, so far it appears that our 5th grade students increased their proficiency by nine percentage points (up to

61%) and our 4th grad-ers increased by four percentage points (to 56%) in reading. In math both 3rd and 4th grade students are above the district average for proficiency levels (68 and 64%, respectively). I also shared that our behavior referrals and suspensions have sig-nificantly decreased from last year. We have so many reasons to celebrate! Next year, we will continue to focus on increasing reading and math scores while also ensuring that we are preparing “good humans.” Our commitment around peace and character building will still be strong!

These past weeks, I enjoyed our carnival (what a fun night creat-ing family memories), field days, and having a special guest principal for the day! Best, Dr. Jen Wilson and Guest Principal Emma Woods

From the Health Office

The end of the year is quickly approaching. If your child has medication in the school health office, a plan needs to be put in place for medication pick-up. Any leftover medication should be physically picked up on the last day of school by a parent or guardian. If this is not possible, arrangements must be made for alternative pick-up. In such cases, please call Kate Brazil at 651-748-6815. If the medi-cation is NOT picked up by the last day of school on June 7th, the medication will be disposed of at the end of the day on June 8th. Thank you.

Be healthy. Be happy. Be well.

Make a difference! Experience life-changing growth as a Minnesota Reading Corps or Minnesota Math Corps Tutor at Cowern Elementary School in 2018-19!

Make a difference in the lives of Cowern Elementary School students who struggle with reading or math by serving as a Reading Corps or Math Corps Tutor in 2018-19! Whether you want to explore a career in educa-tion, re-enter the workforce, or give back to your community, you can make a difference as a tutor.

As a tutor, you’ll see a student’s progress—in their test scores, in their other school work and in their confi-dence as they build their skills. Last year, Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps provided direct services to more than 30,000 children in more than 700 schools across the state. We’re helping more kids reach their reading potential. And you can be part of it.

Reading Corps and Math Corps Tutors receive extensive training and support from onsite coaches. Tutors are paid a living allowance and are eligible for an education award of up to $5,800 to pay tuition or repay quali-fied student loans. Tutors 55 or older may gift the award to a child or grandchild.

If you or someone you know might enjoy making a difference in the lives of Cowern Elementary School students, learn how to get involved at www.readingandmath.net. Positions start in August for the 2018-19 school year. Apply now!

Find more information for Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps Tutors on the attached flyers in this issue of the Paw Prints Newsletter. Please do not apply via the district website.

Help!

Thank You!!! Thank you to everyone who made our annual Carnival a rousing success, everyone who made it out to our last PTG meeting of the year this past Monday, and everyone who came to the movies last night. We CANNOT DO THIS WITHOUT EACH OF YOU!!!! We want to especially thank Abbie Zakrzewski, 2018 Carnival Chair. Without your support and dedication, Abbie, the carnival would not be the stellar event it is today. Thank you for all you do for the children!!! Even though we did not reach our goal of $15,000 in raffle ticket sales, we still “won” in creating a family-friendly event that directly supported our Cowern fami-lies, and between the raffle tickets, game tickets, teacher treasures, and silent auc-tion, we raised approximately $17,500 for our school. THANK YOU for your sup-port in making this a success!

2018 Cash Raffle Prize Winners: 1st Place: Nicole Bullock 2nd Place: Shirly Amundos—Help! Shirly did not include contact info on her winning ticket.
