From The LSFSC President By Texas Banker SASS # 20963 It’s time to shoot some guns down on the Ormsby Ranch this coming Saturday and Sunday. Targets have been moved, reset and painted. Yep, it’s going to be hot, yet another reason to start early and finish early. Lunch will be served consisting of Smoked Beef Tenderloin served on Hoggie Buns. Second item on the menu will be COLD WATERMELON for your enjoyment. On a second note, Roundup 2019 was a success and Lone Star was able to enhance our coffers with much needed Dinaro so we can continue to add needed improvements to the range for more shade and to purchase some new targets. The match received many great compliments from those that attended. Plans are already under way for Roundup 2020. I’m researching earlier dates for cooler weather. This hot weather is awful hard on everyone. So I'm changing the shoot start time as follows: Safety Meeting 8:15am Shooting Starts 8:30am. This will be for August 10th and 11th and September 14th and 15th, 2019. I posted this information on the LSFSC Website. Of course it can always be changed.

Hello to all TSRA Members and friends: Attached is an application to the August 31, 2019 TSRA/Plum Creek Shooting Society fundraiser. You do not have to be a TSRA Member to shoot this match. PCSS is a great club with plenty of camping room. See application for details. Everyone must fill out an application, so pre-register and save time. You can email your application to me and pay at the match, but a check payable to “Tray Golden” is acceptable. I will have a prize drawing for pre-registrations. The club will have a raffle for prizes with proceeds going to the TSRA PAC fund, so if you have something to donate that would be great. TSRA/CAS will auction off a AR-15, donated by Burly Bill Brocius. And…we will have the “Texas Ghost Balloon Shoot” for fun and prizes. GREAT NEWS!!! Colorado Jackson and I will honor the Top Over All Male and Female of the 2019 TSRA/CAS Texas State Championship hosted by the TEXAS HISTORICAL SHOOTIST SOCIETY out of Columbus, TX. The TOAs for 2019 are OKLAHOMA DEE and PANHANDLE COWGIRL. Come out and help us celebrate with these two fine champions of Cowboy Action Shooting. Hope to see ya in Comanche Country,
Wild Bunch Range Officer Roundup 2019 Featuring the world’s first doughboy class and the first Wild Bunch match held in conjunction simultaneously with cowboy action shooting at the same Facility! Hey this is a big deal! An annual cowboy match and a Wild Bunch match shot at the same time and same place for a 2 day event. Roundup was held by Lone Star Frontier Shooting Club, which is the oldest SASS club in Texas on July 13-14. President Texas Banker saw Lots of cowboys and cowgirls in attendance at this match along with great food, hospitality and a great big prize table with lots of neat stuff. Wild Bunch action shooting is alive and well in Texas and Oklahoma. BAMM is very popular and Doughboy is catching fire. The Oklahoma Rough Riders sent a full regiment and were heavily armed wearing the distinctive uniform they are known for and well represented, nearly all participating in The Doughboy class. Doughboy is shot using the BAMM rifle at distant targets instead of the pistol caliber lever action at closer targets. Competitors using the lever action shot targets from 25 to 35 yards. The Doughboy rifle portion is based on 5 shots but reloading would not be uncommon. All DB targets were shot from 50 to 110 yards. 2/3 IDPA sized ar500 steel targets are a common size along with 12”x12” square plate. The competitors are allowed to rest on a prop saddle or shoot offhand. Deluxe Wild Bunch course of fire featuring 28 pistol or more fleshed out the rest of the stage. 10 stages were
set to a short limerick dealing with the shooter negotiating the way thru a day on the border with the opening line of the first stage “I asked you nicely” this stage featured 10 shots with the Doughboy rifle. Second stage “yea I know your boss, he’s tied to the hood of my car” this was a 42 round pistol stage. Continuing to the 10th and final stage it read: Evil Roy jumps from the bed on a moonlit night, Twin guns gleaming no clothes in sight. Opening line: cover me! This stage featured the competitor shooting seven rounds and advancing to cover where the remaining 3 magazines were all shot from behind cover. This match featured no dump targets but lots of dancing dots, dueling trees, statics of various sizes, mission bells and the notorious snuff can plate rack all placed at different distances. Wild Bunch shooters love shooting so side matches were held Saturday after the main match. Almost every competitor stayed and participated in these matches Bolt Action Military Match (BAMM) BAMM Sniper: shooter begins seated with saddle for rest if desired. 5 cartridges in magazine, bolt open. At beep closes bolt and starts shooting engaging targets 75 to 110 yards BAMM Combat: shooter began at left table any position.5 cartridges in rifle bolt open rifle resting on table. Shooter standing 6 feet away. At beep shooter picks up rifle closes bolt and shoots 5 targets with bolt open moves to center table reloads and engages 5 more targets. Moves to right table and engages the last 5 targets. GarandAction Military Match (GAMM) GAMM sniper: seated bolt open 8 in rifle at beep engage distant targets in Nevada sweep.
GAMM combat: any position bolt open 8 in rifle at beep engage 4 targets with 2 sweeps. Pocket pistol Po=pocket. P=pistol. Gun=fun. Popgun: This a side match designed for WW2 or earlier designed .25, .32, and .380 automatics. Think 1903 Colts or 1907 Savages, 1910 Frommer stops 32acp, 1922 Brownings, Walther PP/PPK etc. this is not based on year of manufacture but design therefor a Walther pp made in 1978 can play as well as one made in 1938. The stage featured 3 plates at around 5 yards. Double tap the 3 targets with last shot on center plate. Popgun was shot by everyone as HooDoo Brown furnished ammo and spare guns for those that didn’t have one. July Wild Bunch 2019 This one was a fast and fun match with stages similar yet different than round up. Congratulations to Griff! It was noticed the he is sporting around a shiny new regulator badge and better sights for his 45. Also it was noticed that Horsefeather sported a new to him BAMM rifle it is a 7mm Steyr 1912 Mauser 98 carbine. Cool rifle and good shot! Stage 1 found Greased Light’n at the trail walk. featuring the Dancing Dots he utilized Nevada sweeps from left then right moved to the next set of dancing dots repeated the action and then swept 7 autosets all shooting traditional. Billy Bob used his 9mm Tokerov as a deadmans gun option on this stage and had a bunch of fun with it. Stage 2 Brazos Point. 6 on the dueling tree plus hostage target plate Then 6 statics with a double tap on the end. Rifle targets doughboy for 5 or 10 pistol caliber using the lower and upper swingers plus 3 diamonds. More shooters brought out the dead
man guns for this stage including Triple F, BIlly Bob and Dusty B Stage 3 pecan tree. Cover me! Such a fun and clever stage at roundup with so many compliments that we shot the pistol part the same but added a rifle to finish it out. Beginning at left table with pistol shoot 4 statics and 3 bells move to center cover and from behind cover shoot 4 statics plus 3 bells repeat on left then shoot the snuff can plate rack and 2 statics. Pick up rifle if Doughboy shoot 5 far targets if pistol caliber carbine shoot the 3 25 yard targets twice. With Bruce Jarrett yelling cover me! Drawing his Les Baer and commenced to fighting moving quickly to and completing the pistol component retrieving his doughboy rifle a Swiss k31 and hitting 5 targets rapidly the stage ended. Stage 4 Brazos Point. We like a big ending! 14 shotgun targets starting with 6 in shotgun reload as needed. Grif wanted a big shotgun stage and he shined on this one! Griff also should win an award for fastest golf cart in the west! Triple F ran this one fast with a new to him model 12 that never missed a beat. Break for a much appreciated lunch (Big Thanks!) and then on to BAMM. 2 different BAMMs were shot one sniper and one 3 position combat. Don’t forget everyone is invited to shoot BAMM. Finish your cowboy match and mosey over for some fun competition. Wild Bunch is a lot of fun and adding BAMM GAMM Doughboy and popgun just sweetens the deal. Great folks, great competition and shooting great historic firearms just adds to the appeal. I’m Dusty Boddams and that’s the Boddam line.
Not A Good Name for A Hospital
By German Jack Fordern SASS #101556
Christopher Columbus Slaughter was one of the children of former Texas Ranger and cattleman George Webb Slaughter, whose hand physically wrote out the words of George Littlefield to form the Texas Declaration of Independence From Mexico. Though he was sort of a Columbus himself, young Slaughter was known throughout his life as “Lum”, a nickname for Columbus. Lum Slaughter was born in the Republic of Texas in 1837 in what became Sabine County. He claimed to be the first white child born as the result of a marriage contract in Texas. He was home schooled, and then later attend Larissa College in Cherokee County. Most basic childhood education occurred at home on the frontier. When the family move to Freestone County in 1852, Lum worked alongside his dad to move their herd of cattle across the Trinity River. He turned this experience into a new business venture on his own, helping folks in Louisiana get their cattle across El Rio de los Brazos de Dios, the River of the Arms of God. Doing this for a while allowed Lum to collect enough money to buy out his uncle, $520. He moved the Slaughter herd to Palo Pinto, where he met Cynthia Jowell; they had 5 kids. They were married in 1860 or 1861. It was during this time that Lum worked with the Texas Rangers. He was riding with Captain Sul Ross at the recapture of Cynthia Ann Parker in December of 1860. Lum continued to serve at times with the Texas Rangers as a soldier in the War of
Northern Aggression and the subsequent Indian Wars. Lum was an organizer and early leader in 1877 of what we know as the Texas & Southwest Cattle Raisers Association. He ran 40,000 cattle by 1906 across a stretch of 200 miles, or 1,000,000 acres! Throughout much of his life, he was known as the Cattle King of Texas. He was also the single largest taxpayer in Texas for much of his adult life. After the death of his first wife in 1876, Lum married Carrie A. Averill of Emporia, KS. They had 4 more children. She would be with him when a broken hip forced Lum to relocate to Dallas, sell his cattle interests, and become more involved in banking and philanthropy. Lum started and operated several banks in Dallas. He was involved early on at the turn of the century when Dr. George W. Truett became pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas. Their work to raise money for the church was so successful that Dr. Truett turned to Col. Slaughter for help reviving what had been known as the Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium of Dallas. Having been a fundraiser and student at Baylor University before coming to Dallas, Dr. Truett had the idea to seek permission for the use of the name Baylor to be associated with the hospital. As much as he appreciated all the help from Lum, he realized that Slaughter was not a good name for a hospital. Col. Slaughter died at home in 1919, but is legacy lives on in Dallas through the First Baptist Church at Baylor University Medical Center. Portraits of Dr. Truett and Col. Slaughter hang in the lobby of Truett Hospital at Baylor. His daughters were longtime contributors to the church, as well.
