This independence day, let’s celebrate entrepreneur-ship and what better way to celebrate it than to dedicate a cover story to the Bharat Ratna, Honorary Air Commodore of India and French Legion of Hon-our - Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata popularly known as JRD Tata. India's first pilot; established Air India International as India's first international airline; Chairman of Tata & Sons for 50 years; recipient of Bharat Ratna in 1992. There are many personas of this one personal-ity. Enterprising, indomitable and undaunted – JRD Tata is the pioneer who was driven by the spirit of the skies. Born on July 29, 1904 in Paris, J R D Tata, was fondly referred to as JRD by commoner and king. Repre-senting an exalted idea of Indian-ness: progressive, benevolent, ethical and compassionate, JRD Tata is recognized as the most enterprising Indian entrepre-neur of all times. Recognized as the fourth Chairman of the Tata Group at the young age of 34 only, JRD is credited with placing the Tata Group on the interna-tional map. Flying was a passion with J.R.D. He was the first one to qualify within India to fly. He got his license, which bore on it Number 1, on 10 February 1929. When asked about the greatest adventure of

his life, he replied, 'The flying experience. None can equal that.' He added, 'When you are on your own in that little plane at the control without an instruc-tor, and the plane speeds on the runway and finally takes off - you know you are in the air on your own.' He was not only India's first pilot but he was also

instrumental in giving wings to India by building Tata

Airlines, which ultimately became Air India. such as

operations in a business, JRD urged to bring in pro-fessionals to the table. He turned the Tata Group into a business federation where entrepreneurial talent and expertise were encouraged to flower. He, for the first time, pioneered the system of devel-oping ‘employee welfare schemes’ in corporate In-dia and steered the principles of an eight-hour work-ing day, free medical aid, workers' provident fund and accident compensation schemes, which were later, adopted as statutory requirements in India. He faced severe problems like foreign exchange crunch and severe government controls on big business, but all these could not deter him. JRD was a great leader and motivator. He encour-aged entrepreneurs such as Sir Homi Mody, Russi Mody, Sumant Moolgaokar and Darbari Seth, and many others. JRD Tata was Self-effacing, modest, wistful, endear-ing and the most enterprising Indian of his era. We pay tribute to this great personality and thank him for all his efforts for the betterment of the country.

Marketing Food9:

ENTREPRENEURS ON CAMPUS

Remember the times when mom used to pack home food in tiffin boxes to be eaten during lunch time in school? Remember the time how we used to crib and tell our mothers what we’d like to have and what we don’t? Times change, and as we enter the professional world, home-food becomes a luxury, deadlines and projects seem more important but what can be as important as food? The answer is nothing. Sanket Gada from second year MMS utilized this ba-

sic necessity “food” to start his venture. During his

two and a half years stint at DSP BlackRock Invest-

ment Managers found out that his colleagues and

counterparts had bad eating habits due to hectic

work schedule and therefore resorted to junk food

for it is “fast” in availability and provides satisfac-

tion to the palate.

Small Steps – Big Leaps

In March, 2012, FOOD9 ‘Tiffins for Busy Professionals’

was started. Sanket, leased a property in Goregaon,

Mumbai-W, purchased utensils, containers (tiffin

boxes) for the business and hired chef and other staff

members.

An insight into Food9 operations:

Various people at Food9 co-ordinate and work every day, to provide tiffins containing healthy vegetarian lunch meals to professionals at various work places. Each tiffin consists of sabzi (vegetable), chapattis, daal (lentils), rice and buttermilk. They make sure that the food is made using high quality ingredients and satis-fies not only hunger but the palate as well. The tiffins are differentiated into two categories: a) Economy Meal - Economy Meal is priced at Rs 63

per tiffin.

b) Business Meal - Business Meal is priced at Rs 90 per tiffin. Customers can order either a 6 days trial package or

a monthly package. Food is packed in steel contain-

ers which are then placed in water proof bags keep-

ing in mind the unpredictable weather of Mumbai.

These tiffins are delivered across western Mumbai

by the highly efficient and famous Mumbai Dab-

bawalas. Along with daily tiffins, Food9 also services

small catering orders for meetings conferences, par-

ties etc.

Digital Media - As internet is the best way to reach

the masses in today’s digital world, Sanket devel-

oped the website www.food9.in, with the help of a

friend. This site provides the details of all products

and services offered at Food9, Customers can also

book their tiffins and give feedback on the website.

Food9 is also being promoted using social media like

Facebook.

Print Media – Food9 also used print media to mar-

ket them. Printed brochures and leaflets sent those

through newspapers to various commercial areas in

Mumbai

Tele-marketing – Food9 helpline number was regis-tered with JustDial which made it easy for the po-tential customers to contact Food9. Sanket says, all the marketing and good service helped food9 to reach a count of 96 tiffins to be dis-tributed daily.(as on July 31, 2012)

Future Plans:

Food9 wants to increase its daily sale of tiffins along with expanding its catering business. ‘Health hai toh sab hai’ motivated Food9 to hire a di-etician to provide a daily calorie count to its custom-ers along with providing a customized meal. We e-cell @ SIMSR wish Sanket & Food9 All the very

best for all their future endeavors.

STARTUP OF THE MONTH Worried about Internships? Visit www.hellointern.com Hello Intern, a startup that helps interns find the right apprenticeship opportunities with companies, operates out of IIT Bombay’s Powai campus. It all began in 2006, when IITian Raviraj Jain put forth the concept of a networking website for in-terns to his fellow IITians Snehal Nimje, Abhishek Sharma and Jatin Jindal. Since then, the four have been running the portal out of the campus. With 20,000 registered users, they are now getting ready to commercialise it. Says Nimje, “We are funding the company ourselves, but operate from the IIT campus, because working here gives us certain advantages. In due course, we’d like to move out of the campus and get VC funded.” Hello Intern is a new venture based on the idea of naukri.com but in a different field. The website hel-lointern.com is differentiated from naukri.com by providing services in the field of training/internship, summer jobs, part time jobs only. This venture is started by a group of students from IIT-Bombay with a vision to help the students. The company to cater to the Internship needs of the stu-dents. A good internship matters a lot to the stu-dents in terms of the future competition for a job or practical experience helpful in securing admissions in good colleges for higher studies. Further, intern-ships have been made compulsory in many colleges but the students are devoid of any means to get them and Hello Intern show them the way for free. Many companies do require interns to get better prospective employees or to use as human resource in the case of start-ups who generally cannot afford permanent full time employees. Right now they are focusing mainly in the domain of technical internships. They provide FREE listing of companies’ internship positions and help them se-lect the profiles best-fitting to their requirements. They already have more than 2000 students regis-tered from premier institutions like IITs, NITs, ISM Dhanbad etc. in less than 3 months.

Their recruiter panel spans several sectors from big giants like Qualcomm, Rediff, EBS, HCC, Avalon con-sulting, Mindtree consulting, Webaroo, Myzus to start- ups like Picsquare, ITAakash, Geodesic, and many others.
