The Anniversary ofV-E Day

On May 7, 1945, Germanysurrendered to the Allies, endingWorld War II in Europe. Thefollowing day, May 8, wasdeclared Victory in Europe Day,and this year marks the75th anniversary of themomentous occasion.

After six years of conflict,unconditional surrenderdocuments were signed in Reims,France, at the headquarters ofU.S. Army Gen. Dwight D.Eisenhower, the commander ofthe Allied forces in Europe. Asnews of Germany’s formalsurrender spread, celebrationsbroke out in cities around theworld. Massive crowds gathered inthe streets for parties, parades,dancing and singing.

V-E Day also fell on thebirthday of U.S. President Harry S.Truman, who had taken officeonly a few weeks earlier, after thedeath of President Franklin D.Roosevelt. In a statement, Trumandedicated the day to Roosevelt,who had led the country throughmost of the war.

Truman also remindedAmericans that despite thevictory, “much remains to bedone,” since the war with Japancontinued. It would be anotherthree months, in August 1945,before the battle in the Pacifictheater would end.

Honoring Women inthe Military

Nearly 3 million women haveserved in and with the U.S. military.The Women in Military Service forAmerica Memorial honors thecontributions of servicewomen past,present and future.

Dedicated in 1997, the memorial islocated at the entrance to ArlingtonNational Cemetery, outside the nation’scapital. The 30,000-square-footmonument and museum is devoted totelling the stories of women who havehelped defend the nation since theAmerican Revolution.

Photos, uniforms and other artifactsare exhibited, documenting the manyjobs women have held for the country’sdefense, from nurse to fighter pilot. Ahall of honor recognizes those whogave the ultimate sacrifice, were heldprisoners of war, or received awards forservice and valor.

The heart of the memorial is aninteractive, computerized register thathas the goal of including every womanwho has served. Currently, the databasehas the names, photos and histories ofabout 270,000 women, and visitorscan look up their grandmother, motheror friend. Female veterans or familyand friends of women veterans areencouraged to register at thememorial’s website,WomensMemorial.org.
