thIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the 8 Convocation ceremony of Covenant University. We regard every Convocation ceremony as a significant phase of development in the actualization of the Covenant University visionary mandate of raising a new generation of leaders for the Nigerian, African and global contexts. This year's event is very unique, being the first to be held in the second decade of our existence as a University. Also, a good number of Covenant University Alumni, who joined the University faculty as Graduate Assistants, have successfully completed their postgraduate studies and are among those to be conferred with the Doctor of Philosophy Degrees.Since the release of the first set of Eagles numbering 762 in 2006; the University has graduated a total of 9,009 Eagles

thin seven sets. In this 8 convocation ceremony, an additional 1,466 will be joining this vanguard of new generation leaders. Out of the number, 114 made first class, 720 second class upper division, 565 second lower division and 67 in the third class category. Eleven years ago, we set out to revolutionize the educational landscape of Africa by instituting and driving a curriculum that is functional and productive in meeting the needs of humanity. Our goal was predicated on bridging the perceived gaps inherent in our educational system, which I alluded to during the inauguration of the in-house Consortium at the take-off of Covenant University on the

th27 of November, 1999. I stated then that "A lot of people have academic cert i f icates but are mental ly underdeveloped; some people, even in their 40's after intensive schooling, still do not know not what next step to take in life...” After the tenth anniversary of the University on the 21st of October, 2012, the Board gave the University the mandate of becoming one of the first ten universities in the world in ten years time which was christened 'vision 1 of 10 in 10'. In line with the Board's resolve to reposition the University for speedy accomplishment of the 1 of 10 in 10 mandate, a number of projects will take off in the new session. These include; endowment of special chairs in ICT, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Corporate Governance, creating a Centre for Innovation and Discovery, reinvigoration of the A f r i c a n L e a d e r s h i p D e v e l o p m e n t C e n t r e ,

Internationalization of the Covenant University Certificate and commencement of Hebron FM Radio. The Board of Regents recently approved the adjustment of the University’s academic calendar in line with the practice of renowned world class universities, particularly those that we are in partnership with. To this end, we will commence a Three-Semester academic session, as part of our strategic plan to concretize our international collaborations and linkages as well as give full expression, to our continuous drive for deepening quality and maintaining standards at the cutting-edge.Ladies and Gentlemen, over the years, I have declared on different platforms that Covenant University is a new generation Harvard. Today, we are among the leading 100 Universities in Africa and we are collaborating with several Ivy League Universities. We will remain forever committed to our founding philosophy and the core values.

Finally, I wish to appreciate everyone of you for your presence at this auspicious occasion. Be richly blessed in Jesus Name. Amen

Thank you and once again welcome!

Dr. David O. Oyedepo.Chancellor, Covenant University.

9

With a heart of gratitude to God, I welcome you all to the th8 Convocation Ceremony of Covenant University, tagged

'The Release of Eagles 2013'. Looking back at the accomplishments of the University since inception, we can say with confidence that 'Great is His Faithfulness'. To Him alone be all the glory.

In Covenant University we raise future leaders with high level of spirituality and intellect. This is why we refer to our students as Kings and Queens. So, welcome to Hebron (the location of Covenant University), a royal academy for raising leading leaders and a place where destinies are remolded. Covenant University is a fast-growing, dynamic, vision-birthed and vision-driven University, founded on a Christian mission ethos and is committed to pioneering excellence at different paradigms of learning. In accordance with the visionary mandate of raising a new generation of leaders, the University, since she opened her doors to the charter students on October 21, 2002, has deployed the necessary machinery needed to enable her deliver effectively on her mandate and has continued to blaze the trail and take the lead in delivering quality education in Nigeria. Our programmes are unique in consonance with the unique product that we produce. Besides the high academic content, our activities as an institution are guided by seven Core values. These are Spirituality, Possibility Mentality, Capacity Building, Integrity, Responsibility, Diligence and Sacrifice. Spirituality is the arrowhead of our seven Core values. It is one of the major determinants in the university's students admission, graduation as well as staff employment. Spirituality is sacrosanct. Thus, anything short of absolute dependence on God or lack of reverence for God is absolutely unacceptable. Therefore, the issue of Spirituality is driven by all faculty, staff and students, particularly the Chaplaincy closely supported by the Department of Students Affairs.

Coming immediately after the tenth year anniversary of the University in October 2012, we had the mandate from the BOR to get Covenant University listed among the top 10 universities in the world within the next 10 years. This we have christened “1 of 10 in 10”.

Achieving 1 of 10 in 10 entails embracing the ranking parameters for the Times Higher Education (THE) World Class ranking and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) ranking parameters. Therefore, within the next 5 (five) years

C h i n e d u O s i t a d i n m a Nebo born was on June 3, 1952 in Kafanchan in Kaduna State of Nigeria to Mr. Christopher and Mrs. Ifeyinwa

thNebo of Udi in Enugu State. He was appointed on the 4 February 2013 as the new Minister of Power for the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the President, His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR. Prior to this appointment, Professor Nebo was the Vice Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (February 2011 - February 2013), one of the nine (9) new start-up Federal universities in Nigeria and prior to that he was Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), between 2004 and 2009, serving meritoriously and successfully with several awards to his credit.

Professor Nebo, a diversified and detribalized Nigerian in every sense, had his primary education in Ibadan, Kafanchan, and Port Harcourt; a result of the nature of his father's work while engaged with the Nigeria Railways Corporation. It was during this period that he passed the First School Leaving Certificate Examination with Distinction. He attended the prestigious Government Secondary School Afikpo and shortly thereafter, Government College Umuahia with scholarship before proceeding to the United States for further studies. His decades of knowledge, expertise and experience building in transforming institutions in Nigeria and abroad are assets that have distinguished him. He served as Deputy Vice Chancellor in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology from January 2000 to January 2004. In June 2004, on appointment as Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, he successfully rejuvenated the university and completing several projects and programs that had been left uncompleted, reviving the wounded lion and living up to his name “Ositadinma” meaning “from henceforth it is well,” restoring hope, healing, and beauty to UNN. For his remarkable achievements and noteworthy accomplishments the national body of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) elected Professor Nebo in 2006 as the Best Vice-Chancellor in Nigeria, the following year brought the conferment of the same award by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the next, A Most Outstanding Vice Chancellor Award and induction into All Africa Students Union Hall of Fame.

As Vice Chancellor at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Prof Nebo's visionary leadership and management came to the fore. Despite meagre resources and faced with social and environmental challenges, Professor Nebo successfully created a convivial environment that promoted an enabling environment for increased

harmony between the two host communities of the university and transformed a virgin forest into a university campus within 6 months, which many now term “the six months miracle.”

Professor Nebo is committed to the service of his community and has demonstrated this through chairing, supporting, managing, and advancing causes, NGOs, conferences, and workshops that advance human capacity development, nation building, spiritual and character development, education and healthcare. He served as Member of Governing Board of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, National Steering Committee on Vision 2020, Governing Council of Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), and Enugu State Development Committee (on the inception of Enugu State), as well as Chairman of Enugu State Committee for the Eradication of Cultism. He serves as Archdeacon in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Diocese of Nike.

Professor Nebo is a graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he bagged a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering (First Class Honours and University-wide Prize for Outstanding Student). While an undergraduate, he was listed in the prestigious Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He obtained a Master of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering and Science, all from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology U.S.A. He served as visiting Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and the University of Nevada, Reno, in the U.S. and has authored and produced several publications in reputable international and local journals.Professor Nebo's recognizable and towering profile stands him out as an intellectual giant, a quintessential technocrat, an administrator par excellence, a man of stellar qualities, and a man of visible candor. His passion and commitment to excellence, servant leadership, and integrity to any and every organization or cause he is involved makes him a value-adder, unrepentant crusader, and insightful contributor to national building and transformation. He has been nominated to numerous prestigious biographies which include Who's Who in the U.S., International Youth in Achievement, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, International Book of Honor, etc. He received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2009 and the National Productivity Order of the Merit Award (NPOM) - conferred by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2009 and 2012 respectively. He is happily married to Ifeyinwa, his heartthrob with whom he is still deeply in love and they are blessed with four children and several grandchildren.Ladies and Gentlemen, would you welcome with me our most distinguished keynote address Speaker to make his speech.

ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS

1. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus going on before.

Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;

Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain:

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.

2. At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee;

On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!

Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;

Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

(Refrain)

3. Like a mighty army moves the church of God;

Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.

We are not divided, all one body we,

One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

(Refrain)

The University Orator calls on the Assembly to rise and sing the National Anthem followed by the Covenant University Anthem
