New Teachers In the Building
By Alexis Sanders and Elina Ahokas
Continued "Cooking
Team"
As we start off this school
year there are five new
teachers in Pikeville High
School. You may have
already met these wonderful
new teachers, but there may
be some other things you do
not know about them. We
wanted to make sure you
knew a little about our
newest staff members.
If you are a sophomore
or senior you may have the
new English teacher, Mr.
Hobbs. He is married to
Brittany and is twenty-eight
years old. He wanted to
come to Pikeville because of
the great reputation we
have. He also told us he
loves it here, and it makes it
easy to be new because of
how polite and helpful
everybone is. He recently
taught at Jenkins, and said it
was a different atmosphere
compared to PHS.
We also have a new art
teacher. Mrs. Lucas is thirty-
six years old and has been
teaching art for eleven years.
She is to be married
September 12 to Josh
Johnson. She wanted to be a
member of Pikeville High
School because of the great
opportunities and the
environment. She has loved
the time she has spent with
us. She also commented
that everyone has been
kind and helpful. It was
hard for her to leave Pike
Central, her previous
school, but she is confident
that she made the right
choice.
Downstairs, we have
two new teachers. One of
them is Mrs. Bishop, who is
forty-eight years old and
married to Jerry Bishop.
She wanted to teach at
Pikeville High School
because of the long
tradition of excellence.
Also, her son, John
Franklin, currently attends
Pikeville Elementary. She
teaches Language Arts in
7th grade. She is happy to
have only one grade to
teach because at her
previous school, Kimper,
she taught grades 5-8.
She and her husband also own
the Men’s Corner, a local
business. She said that it is not
hard to be a new teacher
because she has had a long
teaching career of sixteen years
before coming to Pikeville High
School.
Geometry has a new teacher:
Mrs. Jeanette Belcher. She has
been a teacher for over fifteen
years at schools such as Belfry,
Johnson County Central and
now Pikeville. Belcher said that
it is very different working at
Pikeville than Johnson Central
because of the size difference.
"JC was very, very big," she said.

The judges analyzed the dish
by looking at the layers of the
dish and how they were
prepared. "Politeness was also
important to the judges," said
Zane Akers, who is a member of
the cooking team. The
competition took two days. They
plan to progress even further, to
win at the Kentucky State Fair
next year, and are even thinking
about doing the 4-H competition
this year. Congratulations to the
cooking team and good luck
going forward!
Headline Here
This weekend was a
success to say the least! Our
Panther football boys won
their Pike County Bowl
game. On Saturday, August
29th, the boys played against
the Letcher County Central
Cougars. The final score for
the two teams was 49 to 12.
Daric Pugh scored 4
touchdowns, while Chatlin
Jarrell scored 2, and Andrew
McNamee scored 1. Cody
Charles led the team on the
defensive side for the game.
Pikeville had a total of 3
interceptions by Clay Slone,
Tyler Elkins, and Chatlin
Jarrell. Logan Coleman and
Gunner Edmonds both had
fumble recoveries in the
game on Saturday night.
When asked about how he
thinks this season will go,
Coach McNamee said, “We
try to get better each week,
so I feel this season is going
to be a great one!”
We later asked the newest
member to the Panther
family, Chatlin Jarrell, how
he feels this season will go,
and he responded, “We just
have to take it one day at a
time. We just have to keep
working hard on the field.”
We also asked how it feels
to be a part of the Panther
family, to which he said, “it
feels awesome…. It feels
tremendous!”
The team’s head coach, Allie
Sisco said, “I’m not looking for
a quick turn around time. I’m
looking for tournament time.”
Coach Sisco looks like she has
set her girls on the right path
as she sets her focus on the
tournament rather than a
record.
Although the girls lost
their game against Belfry,
they have been successful
throughout the year. Just last
week, the soccer team
celebrated their first win
against Shelby Valley High
School with an awesome score
of 9-0. When the girls aren’t
playing games, they’re
practicing each day after
school. Coach Sisco works her
team five days a week for two
hours each practice. Its safe
to say the girls get plenty of
practice.
The team also does its own
bonding time outside of
school. They go out to eat
together on occasion and do
other team bonding activities
like tie-dying shirts. Each
activity brings them closer
and helps them to play well
together in the games.
The girls work hard and
give their best efforts in
everything they do. This is
shown with their record of 4-
1. It will be interesting to see
where the rest of the season
takes them!
