batkan nyawa orang awam.
Peruntukan undang
– undang2 AKTA KESELAMATAN DAN KESIHATAN
Malaysia, MSOSH amat berharap agar peranan Pengamal Kesela-
jalankan apa-apa aktiviti berisiko tinggi.
mereka. MSOSH sentiasa bersedia untuk bekerjasama dengan
mana-mana pihak yang memerlukan bantuan dalam bidang
Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan agar Budaya Kerja
Selamat diterima oleh semua.

Smart OSH Tool Series: Dynamic HIRARC for OSH Practitioner
MSOSH continues to proactively organise educational programs for OSH
practitioners especially for their members. After Kuantan, the training program has moved to Pasir Gudang, Johor
on 15 Sep 2016 for the topic of Smart OSH Tool Series: Dynamic HIRARC
for OSH Practitioner delivered by Mr . Daman Hur i Mohammad, a
Management System Auditor from certification body. Interestingly, this exercise used a simple and effective technique in as-
sessing risks in the workplace through a dynamic HIRARC (Hazard Identi-
fication, Risk Assessment and Risk Control) template. Hence, this program
targeted those who want to reduce workload in OSH management system
duties in a smart way. Therefore, the session attracted 24 participants who wanted to experience
how the HIRARC program works and benefits their routine tasks. Training approaches began with fundamental understanding of hazard-risk before the practical session in utilisation of HIRARC template. The program gained positive feedback and the participants were very excit-
ed about the training techniques delivered through a combination of basic
understanding of hazard management by incorporating elements of the in-
teractive OSH management system tools that can ensure the OSH systems
to become more productive in implementation. Any organisation who is keen to invite MSOSH for in-house training or
consultancy, kindly contact our secretariat at [email protected] for

Persiapan menghadapi bencana bukan hanya terletak kepada
kelengkapan peralatan, kemudahan infrastuktur dan bantuan
anggota penyelamat semata-mata, malah merangkumi aspek
persediaan mentaliti masyarakat khususnya mereka yang
berdepan risko bencana. Sempena Bulan Kesiapsiagaan Negara, Persatuan Kese-lamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Malaysia (MSOSH) dengan
kerjasama Pertubuhan Keselamatan
Sosial (PERKESO) selain sokong-an Agensi Pengurusan Bencana
Negara (NADMA), Angkatan Per-tahanan Awam Malaysia (APM),
Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat
Malaysia (JBPM) berganding bahu
dalam misi mendidik serta
mengubah tanggapan masyarakat
untuk tidak memandang ringan
bencana yang bakal dihadapi
melalui program Pengurusan Risiko
Bencana Berasaskan Masyarakat
perlu dilakukan apabila berdepan bencana kerana kekerapan
mereka berdepan situasi sama. “Bagaimanapun, kerana kerap berdepan perkara sama,
penyelamat setiap kali berlaku bencana. “ Setiap kali bencana, segelintir masya-rakat kita lebih ‘selesa’ menunggu disela-matkan agensi penyelamat berbanding ber-
tindak sendiri sehingga situasi meruncing
baru mahu berfikir cara untuk selamatkan
diri” “Pemikiran seperti ini kita mahu ubah
supaya tidak menjadi budaya apabila
berlaku bencana” katanya. Mohd Zainoor berkata, aktiviti ‘hazard
mapping’ dalam modiul program CBD-RM bertujuan membantu mengenalpasti
bahaya dihadapi penduduk di kawasan
banjir di kampung berkenaan. Melaluinya, penduduk membawa pega-wai keselamatan bersama ke kawasan
terdedah bahaya seperti di pesisir sungai
dan laluan kecemasan serta zon selamat
yang digunakan ketika banjir. “Kami saling berkongsi idea dan
bertukar kaedah menyelamatkan diri
serta saling mengenalpasti ancaman baha-ya ketika banjir’” katanya. Menurutnya, berdasarkan aktiviti
‘hazard mapping’ dilakukan pihaknya,
mendapati ada penduduk sedar laluan
kecemasan yang diwujudkan di kampung
berkenaan “Namun, disebabkan panik dan kurang pendedahan tindakan
berdepan bencana mereka kerap bertindak bersendirian”
katanya yang turut mendapat kerjasama kumpulan motosikal
berkuasa tinggi Johor Versys Owner Group (JVOG). Program ini dirasmikan oleh Presiden MSOSH En
Khairuddin Hairan dan diatur oleh Cik Dhuha Shahrudin.

Research has shown that following a
healthy eating plan can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure or hypertension and lower an exist-ing elevated blood pressure. Knowing what you eat can serve to provide Malaysians with information on this chronic illness and create awareness of atrial fibrilla-tion – arrhythmias, or in simple terms ‘irregular heart beat’, often caused by hypertension. This article is to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this silent killer, also known as the modern epidemic. Globally, one in three adults suffers from hyperten-sion. Statistics show that 42.6% of Malaysians above the age of 30 have high blood pressure while one in five under 50 years old is at risk of hypertension and heart attack. For every patient diagnosed with hyper-tension, there may be another three still undiagnosed. If left undiagnosed, high blood pressure can lead to high cholesterol and diabetes, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and even kidney failure. High blood pressure is the main cause of strokes and a ma-jor cause of heart attacks and heart failures, the two most common causes of death and illness in the world. Most patients who suffer heart attacks or strokes find out, too late, that the root cause of their condition is hypertension.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE High blood pressure is both treatable and preventable.
The conventional way to treat hypertension is to solely
depend on drugs and medicines. However, the world
has begun to realise that hypertension can be prevent-
ed or controlled by a change in diet and lifestyle. Often,
the change is at least as important (if not more im-
portant) than taking medicine.
The risk of developing high blood pressure can be
reduced by: • Reducing sodium intake (limit to 2000mg of sodi-
um or 1 teaspoon of salt per day) • Increasing potassium intake (recommended intake is
4.7g of Potassium) – by using Potassium salt and
consuming at least 2 servings of fruit and 3 servings
of vegetables every day. • eating a balanced diet at each meal – choose a combi-
nation of foods based on the Malaysian Food Pyramid
• maintaining a healthy body weight within a normal Body
Mass Index BMI) of 18.5-24.9 [BMI=weight(kg)/height
(m)²] • avoiding harmful use of alcohol - the current recom-
mended limits are 21 units of alcohol a week for men,
and 14 units a week for women • getting regular exercise (at least 30 minutes of moder-
ate-intensity physical activity at least 5-6 days a week) • avoiding tobacco use
PLAN TO BE HEALTHY An overall healthy eating plan to follow is the “DASH”
diet, which stands for “Dietary Approaches to Stop
Hypertension.” A study tested the effects of nutrients in
food on blood pressure and showed that elevated
blood pressure was reduced by eating more fruit and
vegetables, and less food with saturated fat, total fat,
and cholesterol. Fruit and vegetables are full of vita-
mins, minerals and fibre essential for our bodies. They
also contain potassium, which helps to balance out the
negative effects of salt, thereby helping to lower blood
pressure. In addition to incorporating a healthier eating plan to
your daily diet, a good alternative is to reduce the salt
content of these foods. The simplest way is to change
the salt in your kitchen to a low-sodium, high mineral
salt which will make a significant difference to your
diet. Low sodium salts have a much lower sodium content
compared to other salts, and contain a balance of all
the essential minerals your body needs - potassium,
magnesium and calcium. Low sodium salts can be
used in any of your favourite foods and will not com-
promise on the taste. Low sodium salts contain potas-
sium chloride which supplements the saltiness of sodi-
um chloride. Choosing a low sodium
salt also means that
the lower sodium in-
take will aid in lowering
your blood pressure
levels, and help you
avoid all the other dan-
gerous diseases that it
causes. So for a
healthier eating plan
and longer life span,
choose Lake Salt
LIGHT! With 50% lower
sodium than regular
salt, Lake Salt LIGHT
is ready to be your
choice. For more details on this product, feel free to contact LCP Supplies (M) Sdn Bhd at Tel: 03-80668587. Fax: 03- 80668487 E- mail: [email protected] Website: www.finefoods.com.my

OUTSTANDING SPEAKERS
MSOSH has taken the initiatives to address the issues and challenges in achieving the nation’s OSH objectives as outlined in the OSH-Master Plan 2020 (OSH MP2020) One of the key success factors is the competency of the OSH practitioners and the vital role they play in implementing safe works procedures and monitoring safe work practices at the worksites. They are both the eyes and ears of the employers and employees they represent. They therefore need to display high professionalism in their work and effectiveness in the man-agement of OSH on a daily basis. A special program OSH-MP2020 :Towards Professionalism was organized on the 29th November in Monash University has attracted a big group of participants. Three outstanding speakers were invited to share their topics and experiences. A dialogue session with En Anuar Embi from DOSH Selangor concluded the eventful program.
