Physical Anthropology – An IntroductionThis course is an introduction to physical anthropology which is concerned with human evolution and human variation. Darwin’s theory of evolution will be discussed, and then will go on to trace human origins from the earliest primates to Homo sapiens. We will study primate skeletal anatomy and maps of the areas of exploration. The last lesson will look at the extinction of Neanderthals and the success of modern humans.

Cheryle enjoys learning and teaching about other cultures, and the evolution of the human species on our planet. Cheryle has taught at ElderCollege for several years.

Perspectives On Russia This seminar will explore some of the influences on the Russian way of life from the Tsarist era through the post-Soviet period. We will look at everyday life; events that have shaped the Russian psyche; art, music, language and literature; and humour, which provides insight into culture. The course includes extensive audio/visual material.

DAVID PRUD’HOMME (M.A. Russian Literature; Ph.D. Slavic Linguistics) has lived, studied, worked, and traveled in Russia, which included several trips on a World Bank project. He also conducted research at the Pushkin Institute of the Russian Language.

Discover the “one thing” which is key to everything about photography. Understand how to adjust the two main mechanical controls plus the two electronic controls to where they need to be to create an image. Learn how to see light and use it to create images which tell a story, produce a mood, or both. Then find out the many ways to share your creations with your community and maybe the world.

KENNETH MEISNER loves teaching photography and explaining it in an understandable way. He was self-taught to begin with, and gained experience shooting stock, landscapes, events and portraits. Nurturing Grieving And Mourning Loss This course will offer opportunities for both personal reflection and small group discussion. The course will focus on taking an inventory of loss in our lives, healthy ways of dealing with loss, myths of grief and looking at how we can be a companioning presence in the lives of those mourning loss.

Our Reflections About The Future We will address the question ‘How can our generation contribute towards a ‘desirable’ future?’. ‘Desirable’ will be defined through discussion based on reasonably factual and informed opinions of the class. Some excerpts of Futurists will be presented about books read by participants and to create a frame of reference for discussion. Topics may include some of the following: overpopulation, needs of food and water, robotization, the environment, and elder care, etc. It is the personal reflections that will contribute most to the discussion.

Family Care After DeathWhen a family member dies many decisions must be made. Who gets to make them? Who wants to make them? This course will consider the few weeks immediately following a death. Information will be presented about body care, transportation, paperwork, legalities, the feast, the memories, and what to do with all the “treasures”. What might we learn from other countries? There will, no doubt, be lots of discussion!

DEBORAH VAN DER GOES has worked as a social worker and Anglican priest for 30+ years. In that time she has supported many families caring for loved ones before and after death. In her own family she has acted as ‘funeral director’ three times. She draws on these experiences to bring you this course on family care after death.

Indigenous PerspectivesThis course offers an introduction to select local Indigenous protocols and accompanying language and song. It features Indigenous worldviews, and the importance of “storywork” through creation stories and prophecies. Lastly, it shares perspectives on First Nations relationships with the Canadian state. The course fee includes a $5 supply fee.

MELODY MARTIN & LAURIE MEIJER-DREES have a wide range of academic knowledge in Indigenous histories, literatures, epistemes and socio-political organizations. The instructors share over 20 years of experience learning from local Indigenous Elders and community members.

Bridge III: Things No TrumpThe emphasis of this course will be on bidding, playing and defending against no trump contracts. It is designed for people who have completed Bridge I & II or have a working knowledge of the content of those courses. The course will consist of six 2-hour sessions. Each session will contain the bidding and playing of 4 pre-determined hands followed by a review and discussion of the bidding and play.

JIM CRIST is an amateur bridge player striving to improve his game. Now retired, his eclectic career included designing and delivering training in a variety of subjects, from human resource management to nuclear power plant operations.

China And The West Against Japan: World At War 1931-1945This course will cover traditional interpretations of WWII in Asia and the Pacific. We will look at Japanese, Chinese and Western interpretations of the war in Asia. Emphasis will be upon the reasons for Japanese expansion, its conflict with other rising powers and the course of the war, with emphasis on the war in mainland Asia. The legacy of WWII in Asia-Pacific and its effects on legitimacy of rule in countries and current international relations will also be discussed.

ROD SZASZ is a private business person with over 25 years of living in Japan and China and is fluent in Japanese. He has a M.Sc. London School of Economics, UBC, and VIU Alumnus. He has made original contributions in research to the study of WWII in Asia and the Pacific with translations of Japanese war-related documents. He was voted in as a Member of the Royal Historical Society and currently resides in Nanaimo engaged in running venture businesses in new technology.

British Isles 1763-1801; Enlightenment And Revolution Enlightenment ideas, the expansion of empire, revolutions in America and France, and revolt in Ireland initiated rapid changes in British society and politics in the second half of the 18th century. Key events during those years will be studied through the lives of individuals: George III and John Wilkes, Edmund Burke and Tom Paine, David Hume and Adam Smith, Elizabeth Montegu and Fanny Burney, Mary Woolstonecraft and Lord Edward Fitzgerald.

Administering An Estate - Guidelines For Executors And AdministratorsRecently the Province of British Columbia passed the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (WESA) and introduced new Court Rules for Probate. The procedures and forms for applying for an Estate Grant were substantially changed. This course highlights the steps that an Executor or Administrator must take and includes determining whether or not a Will must be probated, the legal requirements for drawing and submitting an application for an Estate Grant, calculation of probate fees and the basic steps that every executor or administration must be aware of. This is an invaluable course for someone who is administering an Estate or who has agreed to act as an Executor.

Planning Your WillPlanning a will involves more than filling in a form document. The Province of British Columbia recently passed the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (WESA) which replaced several statutes including the Wills Act. This overview course will highlight the legal requirements set out in WESA as well as considering special circumstances such as blended families, second marriages, common-law relationships, income tax planning, and alternate planning techniques including joint tenancies.

Fossils - Windows Into The PastThis course provides an overall view of the fossil history of the earth, emphasizing the paleontology of Vancouver Island. Discussions include types of fossilization, rocks, minerals and geological time periods.

GRAHAM BEARD is President of the Vancouver Island Paleontology Museum Society, as well as Director and Curator of the Museum. He is Vice President of the BC Paleontological Alliance and co-author of West Coast Fossils and numerous scientific papers.

Coal Mining History On Vancouver IslandFor over one hundred years, Scottish, English, Italian, Croatian and Chinese miners dug the coal that lies beneath the surface of Vancouver Island from Ladysmith to Port Hardy. Generations of miners worked without the protection of a union; they died in floods, explosions and cave-ins. Their families survived on the strength of the community. One Scottish miner became the wealthiest man in British Columbia and the most hated.

DAVE KLINGER is originally from Michigan, but lived and worked in Calgary from 1969 to 2010, when he and his wife moved to Parksville. He is a retired teacher with experience teaching in University, High School, and Elementary School, as well as in his own private studio. Dave holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music (piano performance) degrees from Michigan State University.

Introduction To Yoga PhilosophyYoga is a vast and ancient system for human wellness. Here in the west, we are beginning to see some of the aspects and benefits of yoga, largely based on the physical practice (asana). Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative and more - there are many forms and the terminology can be confusing. This course will provide an introduction to the history and purpose of yoga, the different forms of yoga (and their benefits), and guidelines for both physical and meditation. We will practice different meditation techniques in class.

This course will examine the roots, the nature, and the impact of this struggle; the background and ideology; how the revolution developed under Lenin and Stalin; the global conflict of the Cold War, with its far reaching, long lasting, and sometimes surprising consequences; and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The Biology Of Pacific Salmon Learn about the physiology, ecology and behaviour of the 5 species of Pacific Salmon occurring in British Columbia. This will include topics such as the orientation and navigation mechanisms involving the sun, polarized light, and the earth magnetic field that may be used by these fish for direction finding during long distance migrations, and their territorial courtship behaviour. The final session will focus on the biogeography and conservation of Pacific salmon.

Seniors’ Safety The first session of this three week course, Home and Personal Safety and Financial Security and Counterfeits, covers how to keep yourself safe in your home and when you leave. Financial safety includes identity theft and counterfeit money. The second session deals with Frauds and Scams, Internet and Cyber Crime, and Privacy and Security on Facebook. The last session will be a detailed discussion on Elder Abuse, signs of abuse, who abuses, and the best ways to help people you think may be suffering from Elder Abuse and what resources are available.

It’s Clouds Illusions You’ll RecallHave you ever stared at a painting and wondered how the artist created such a compelling sky? Did it deepen your desire to create your own painting of a cloudscape? In this course science will mesh with both Art and Poetry, as we first become familiar with nephology, the earth science study of clouds. We will then analyze how artistic Masters, such as van Gogh, painted their clouds. Poems and songs centered on clouds, will also be interwoven with this visual stimuli. In the second part of each class, armed with ‘tricks of the trade’ for creating powerful skies, you will create your own acrylic landscape paintings (bring some reference photos you might want to use). Paint, Politics, And PersuasionThis course will examine the reciprocal relationship between selected works of art and the historical and political milieu in which they were created. Follow with an examination of the lives of Impressionists, Neo-Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters and their “water”-oriented scenes. How To Dance Like An APE In 2018 (APE = Author-Publisher-Entrepreneur) In a safe and informative atmosphere we’ll examine writing and indie publishing in 2018, expanding on topics covered in the instructors’ fall workshops.
