LIBRARY: Department has separate library for Botany, Biotechnology &
Microbiology, with sufficient number of books for P G students. The books are well
classified under different heads such as – General Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology,
and simply mind-boggling. On one hand, it caters to the industrial sector such as food and
beverages industry, textiles industry, biological products, medicines and pharmaceuticals while
on the other hand this branch of science caters to the requirements of agriculture, animal
husbandry, nutrition and environmental conservation. This is an upcoming and constantly
growing science and has worldwide scope especially in terms of research. The scope for research
is very wide and efficient work gets fast acclamation within multinationals.
Microbiology
Introduction and Scope
Microbiology is the specific branch of ‘biology’ that essentially deals with the elaborated
investigation of ‘microscopic organisms’ termed as microbes that are composed of only one cell.
These are typically either unicellular or multicellular microscopic organisms that are distributed
abundantly both in the living bodies of plants and animals and also in the air, water, soil, and
marine kingdom. It can be also defined as ‘the study of living organisms of microscopic size, that
include essentially bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and the infectious agents at the very
borderline of life which are broadly known as viruses.”
Microbial Diversity
Different Techniques related to Microbiology
Microbiology has an impact on medicine, Food and Dairy Industry, agriculture, food sciences,
ecology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology and many other fields. One who is interested in
Microbes can work as a virologist, bacteriologist, phycologist, mycologist and a microbiologist
etc in the above fields.
