    VoxPops

    Alldocumentarieshavesectionsinwhichtheyaskthe

public about their topic and their views on that

specific topic. The members of the public usually

asked are normally those that fit into the target

audience category. Therefore we asked various

people around college whether or not they illegally

download. Another interesting factor was that

    membersofourtargetaudienceareactuallyseen to

    bethemainculpritsofillegaldownloading!Therefore

    askingthemembersofthepublicdoordontillegally

    downloadallowstheviewerstogaugethatstereotype

    To

    make

    this

    representative

    in

    thedocumentary,5clipswerechosen,3sayingIdo

and 2 saying I dont. The additional benefit of vox

pops it that they allow you to speak to all genders/

    ethnicities,makingourdocumentaryunbiasedinthat

respect. The main reason we had our vox pops talk directly into the camera was because our

    researchindicatedthatapresenterwasntwantedinthedocumentary.AstheBBCdocumentaryhas

    apresenter,atwoshotisused inordertoshowtheconversationbetweenpresenterandmember

of the public. We decided to use medium closeup shots for the voxpops as this is a common

conventionof interviews, becausecloseupsare too intimatewhereas longshotsarenot intimate

    enough.If

    the

    vox

    pops

    could

    have

    been

    improved,

    Iwould

    have

    asked

    either

    all

    of

    them

    thecameraortheinterviewer,asamixtureofthetwolooksunplannedandunprofessional.

    Voiceover

    Alldocumentarieshaveavoiceoverinordertoestablishstructureand

    Music

a balanced view to the audience. As we did not have an onscreen

presenter, the voiceover was more important. Throughout the

documentary, the voiceover gives facts and figures to the viewer as

well as conveying settingjust before an interview. However, most

voiceovers have sound of some sort playing behind their voice, in

order to keep audience attention. If we could do the documentary

    again,wewouldhaveaddedsoundbehindthevoiceover,asitwould

    makethedocumentaryseemmoreprofessional.

All documentaries include nondiegetic music in order to add a tempo during the montage or

    stimulatetheaudiencethroughouttheprogram.Inorderforustoincludemusichowever,wehadto

use noncopyright music. This is because the time frame and the size of actual record companies

Therefore we used http://freeplaymusic.com/ in order to find an upbeat, lively

sound that could be used in the opening montage. The sound levels were then

    alteredinordertoaccommodatevoiceoversandclipsfrominterviews.IfIcoulddo

need to be short and memorable, as long winded

    methodscanbecometiresomefortheaudience.In

order to do this, we presented them over the
