Dear Colleagues in Dentistry,

In 1981, the first visiting professorship in our school’s long history was established by Jack R. Winston, DDS, Class of 1943. He created the professorship in cosmetic and restorative dentistry to demonstrate the significance of continuing education.

Because of Dr. Winston’s generosity, our 5th Annual Generations Dental Conference will feature a noteworthy continuing education program, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16 in The Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center. The program will feature the internationally renowned lecturer in esthetic dentistry Bud Mopper, DDS, MS, who will present “Catch the Composite Wave: and Surf its Potential!” Dr. Mopper will demonstrate ways to achieve consistently reliable results and will give participants the recipes for success for every restorative situation.

Don’t forget—after the Generations Dental Conference is the 2016 UTSD Alumni Round-Up Recognition Dinner. The dinner will also be held at the Cooley Center, and will start with a reception at 6:45 p.m. Please join us for a fun evening with old friends and fellow alumni of our school.

And finally, we are offering two new online continuing education courses: “Overview of Dental Diagnostic System” presented by Shawn S. Adibi, DDS, MEd, and “Smoking Cessation for the Dental Professional” presented by Deborah R. Franklin, DDS, MA, LPC. Both presenters are associate professors in the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health at UTSD. These course modules will give you better insight as a practitioner when treating patients.

About the PresentersShirley Branam, RDH, MBA, is a Clinical Educator II for Dentsply Sirona. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Michigan and continued on to complete a Master of Business Administration degree in Health Care Management from the University of Phoenix. Shirley’s background includes over 30 years in clinical and educational experience in the dental assisting and dental hygiene professions.

Theresa Johnson, RDH, MBA, is a Clinical Educator for DENTSPLY Professional serving the Southwest Region of the U.S. She received her dental hygiene degree from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio and earned a bachelor’s degree in technical and applied studies from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She received an MBA with a concentration in healthcare administration from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Gail Malone, RDH, BSDH, is Manager of the Clinical Education team for DENTSP-LY Professional. She received her dental hygiene degree from Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and earned a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, serving as adjunct faculty at the school.

UTSD Faculty Assisting with Course: Harold Henson, RDH, MEd, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene and Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He is a former Director of Simulation at the School of Dentistry and has held numerous leadership positions in dental hygiene organizations at the national, state and local levels.

Course DescriptionThis full-day course is designed to provide clinicians with scientific evidence and theory supporting the use of ultrasonic instrumentation as a primary instrumentation choice for periodontal debridement procedures. The course will include a review of technology basics for magnetostrictive and piezoelectric technology. In addition, there will be an in-depth discussion by course attendees of their current usage of ultrasonic instrumentation. The afternoon session includes a unique hands-on clinical instruction session on insert/tip selection and instrumentation techniques delivered at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston Simulation Center, where participants will apply concepts in a learner-centered environment under the guidance of the Ultrasonic Scaling Teaching Institute (USTI) and School of Dentistry faculty. Finally, participants will develop an action plan on how to implement this effectively within their clinical practices.

About the Presenter Cynthia C. Gadbury-Amyot, MS, EdD, serves as Associate Dean and Professor of Instructional Technology and Faculty Development, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), School of Dentistry. She served three years as Director of Graduate and Degree Completion Studies and five years as Director of the Division of Dental Hygiene.

Dr. Amyot’s research interests include: portfolio assessment of student competency, community-based service-learning, access to care, and distance and online education. She served as an educational consultant for the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. She is the recipient of the 2014 ADHA Alfred C. Fones Award, a national award recognizing outstanding achievement and dedication to the profession of dental hygiene. She was named the recipient of the 2007 ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship and was awarded the Pfizer/ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene in 2004.

Course Description You face choices every day when providing dental assisting and dental hygiene care for your patients. Patients look to you for your expertise and recommendations to assist them in decision-making. Today’s Internet environment presents patients and providers with abundant sources of information – much of which is neither valid nor reliable. This course will model evidence-based methods to help practitioners sort through the masses of information presented to patients and cli-nicians on a daily basis. About the Presenters Ruth E. Conn, RDH, MSDH, is an Assistant Professor in the Dental Hygiene Program of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD). Prior to joining the UTSD faculty in 2012, she practiced clinical dental hygiene for 34 years, working in family and pediatric offices. Mrs. Conn graduated from UTSD in 1978 with a certificate in dental hygiene. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene from UTSD in 2011 and in 2015 completed a master’s degree through The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is a member

of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the American Dental Education Association. Mrs. Conn has served as secretary for the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists’ Society since 2014. In 2016, UTSD dental hygiene students chose her as winner of the Lorna J. Bruning Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Donna Warren Morris, RDH, MEd, is a Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston where she serves as the director of the dental hygiene program. She is a member of the UT Consortium on Aging, American Dental Education Association and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. Her teaching has been recognized with numerous awards, including two John P. McGovern Awards, the UT Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Dental Hygiene Alumni Association Distinguished

Alumni Award, and the ADEA/Procter and Gamble Dental Hygiene Teaching Excellence Award. She is a frequent lecturer on oral disease prevention, elder issues, tobacco cessation and other topics. She was recently featured as one of the “20 Top Dental Professors in Dental Hygiene” by Medical Technology Schools.

Course Description This session will focus on the unique oral health needs of infants, toddlers and adolescents. Topics addressed will be patient management, caries risk assessment, anticipatory guidance, parental education in oral hygiene and nutrition/diet. The First Dental Home program and other programs available for oral health care of children will be discussed along with early childhood caries, its etiology and prevalence.

Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Discuss the importance of oral health care for infants, toddlers and adolescents

• Describe the First Dental Home program and other early childhood oral health program components

• Accurately complete a caries risk assessment for infants, toddlers and adolescents.

Course DescriptionThis hands-on course is aimed at general practitioners interested in expanding their scope of practice by incorporating socket grafting and ridge-preservation techniques. Emphasis will be placed on: 1) diagnosis of alveolar defects, 2) the biology of socket repair, 3) an ev-idence-based review of contemporary bone substitutes, 4) techniques for ridge preservation, including guided bone regeneration, and 5) coding and billing for socket grafting.

About the Presenter John P. Schmitz, DDS, MS, PhD, graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio before attending Marquette University School of Dentistry. He spent time on active duty in the U.S. Army, completing an internship at Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning, Ga., and the U.S. Army Medical Science Research Fellowship at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C. He was subsequently a researcher in the Bone and Polymer Research Program for Maxillofacial Trauma at the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research, Washington, D.C. Dr. Schmitz completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital and earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry, studying

bone and cartilage mineralization at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio under a National Institutes of Health Dental Scientist Training Program. Board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Schmitz is a fellow of both the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the Academy of Osseointegration

About the Presenters: Paul Levine, DDS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry, where he also serves as course director for a predoctoral sleep medicine course. He earned his DDS from UTHealth School of Dentistry in 1982. Dr. Levine maintains a private practice with a focus on the dental management of sleep-disordered breathing, and, with more than 100 hours of continuing education in the field of dental sleep medicine, he has developed a passion for teaching both students and dentists alike about the importance of pursuing education in this fast-evolving field.

Ronald S. Prehn, ThM, DDS, a third-generation dentist, focuses his practice on the cusp between medicine and dentistry, providing care for patients with sleep-related breathing disturbances, as well as headaches and TMJ. He is a board-certified diplomate of both the American Board of Orofacial Pain and the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, and he currently sits on the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine’s Board of Directors. Dr. Prehn earned his DDS at Marquette School of Dentistry in 1981. His postgraduate studies were at the University of Florida’s Parker Mahan Facial Pain Center in 1993 and the L.D.

Pankey Institute. His limited practice, REstore TMJ & Sleep Therapy, PA is in The Woodlands (www.tmjtexas.com). He has been published in the Journal of Sleep and other journals, and he is involved in numerous sleep and TMJ research projects.

Pedro M. Trejo, DDS, MS, is a dual specialist in prosthodontics and periodontics. He earned a certificate in prosthodontics from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and a certificate and master’s degree in periodontics from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He received his DDS degree form the Autonomous University of Mexico. Dr. Trejo is a

diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and serves as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Periodontology at UTSD. He has extensive experience in both clinical and instructional implant surgical and restorative dentistry. He has treated numerous cases involving guided-implant surgery, and he has published and lectured on the subject. Since 1995, Dr. Trejo has maintained a private practice limited to periodontics and prosthodontics in Houston.

Course DescriptionThe course is recommended for both novices and experienced clinicians. Managing Risks in Today’s Dental Practice:Legally Analyzing Clinical Dentistry

Course DescriptionIn this full-day course for dental practitioners, we will discuss actual investigations and cases of alleged violations of the Texas Dental Practice Act and the Rules and Regulations of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, which were prosecuted by the TSBDE. We will analyze the involved diagnosis and treatment planning of the clinical dentistry and review which risk-management protocols and procedures were implemented, if any, and the applicable Texas law. This course will cover the TSBDE acceptable “risk-management” course information to include record-keeping and esthetics. By the end of the course, the participants will have a better understanding of clinical approaches that are acceptable.

Course ObjectivesAt the conclusion of this course you will understand how to:

• Review clinical dentistry in cases, including record-keeping, which ultimately led to TSBDE investigation

• Value ethical approaches to clinical dentistry in your own practice• Review and implement the risk-management procedures and protocols that will prevent

patient complaints to the TSBDE• Review the applicable provisions of the Texas Dental Practice Act and the Rules and • Regulations of the TSBDE that most often result in patient complaints to the board.

About the PresentersBoyd Shepherd, DDS, JD, has practiced law since 1994. Dr. Shepherd is a 1988 graduate of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston and a 1992 graduate of South Texas College of Law. He has developed a general civil practice with a primary emphasis on providing comprehensive legal services and consultation on a wide range of legal matters, including dental malpractice, Texas law, TSBDE issues, and employment law. Dr. Shepherd directs several courses at the School of Dentistry, including Law & Regulations, Ethics, and Practice Management.

Laura Diamond, JD, has practiced law since 2005. Ms. Diamond is a 2004 graduate of Baylor University School of Law. Her administrative law practice is focused on assisting individuals and businesses acquire and defend occupational licenses. She has successfully represented clients at the agency level (complaint, investigation, informal settlement conference) as well as before the State Office of Administrative Hearings (SOAH). He is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.

Samuel B. Low, DDS, MS, MEd, provides dentists and dental hygienists with the tools needed for successfully managing the periodontal patient in general and periodontal practices. As an associate faculty member of the L.D. Pankey Institute for 20 years and Professor Emeritus, University of Florida, College of Dentistry, Dr. Low’s many years’ experience training dental professionals is evident in his straightforward, informative and entertaining teaching style.

Robin L. Weltman, DDS, MS, completed her DDS and Master of Science degrees in periodontics from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. She is an associate professor and director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at the School of Dentistry.

Course Description This symposium will present lecturers from around the country in the fields of Periodontics and Prosthodontics to reveal the latest trends in periodontology and implants. Dr. Samuel B. Low, an alumnus from 1975, will spend the day speaking on such topics as innovations in periodontics and incorporating quality periodontics in your restor-ative practice. In addition, the day will also include a series of short lectures from our renowned faculty members at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, Drs. Nikola Angelov and Robin Weltman on updates concerning the new guidelines for diagnosis of periodontal disease from the American Academy of Periodontology and periodontal disease in children and adolescents.

New Director of Alumni Affairs, CDE and EventsTaressa C. Visor, formerly Assistant Director of Development for UTSD, has accepted a new position as Director of Alumni Affairs, CDE and Events for UTSD. She will begin her new job Aug. 16. In this newly created role, she will lead current UTSD staff in support of a new center that will coordinate and unify the activities of alumni affairs, continuing dental education and the Professional Resource Center. She will also oversee special events and initiate exciting new programs for our students, alumni and the practicing community. Ms. Visor will report to the dean, although a new Advisory Board will be created to help guide the center’s priorities.

New Director for Dental Hygiene ProgramAfter a national search, we have selected Professor Donna Warren Morris, RDH, MEd, as UTSD’s new Dental Hygiene Program Director, effective Aug. 1. Professor Morris is widely known on the local, state and national levels as a leader in dental hygiene education, professional development and leadership. She has been with UTSD for 23 years and will work to move the DH program into exciting new directions, such as BS degree-completion, joint BSDH/MPH programs, engagement with DH alumni, and fundraising. She will report to Dr. Nikola Angelov, chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene. Many thanks to Dr. Harold Henson for serving as Interim Director over these many months.

Associate Professor Shalizeh “Shelly” Patel, DDS, of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics has been named Director of Clinical Simulation for UTSD, effective July 1. She succeeds Dr. Renato Silva, who now chairs the Department of Endodontics. In addition to maintaining our one-of-a-kind curriculum in clinical simulation, Dr. Patel will be working with departments and others to expand the use of virtual patients in educating dental and dental hygiene students. In this role, Dr. Patel will report to Dr. Robert Spears, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Preregistration: Preregistration for all courses is necessary. It is beneficial for participants to preregister for a course, as the course packet will be available for them at check-in. Please call the Office of Continuing Dental Education at 713-486-4028 to preregister for a course. Upon registering in any continuing dental education activity, the participant agrees that The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston and its affiliates, and all personnel associated with the program, are not responsible or liable for any injuries or other damages sustained by the attendee in connection with the scheduled activity, and the participant hereby releases each of them from any claims against them arising directly or indirectly from any such injury or damage. The registered participant grants permission to the Office of Continuing Dental Education (and its designees and agents) to utilize the participants’ image, likeness, actions and/or statements in any live or recorded audio, video, or photographic display or other transmission, exhibition, publication, or reproduction made of, about, or at, the activity without further authorization or compensation. Participants may not use video- or audio-recording devices during the course or scheduled event. Registering for any continuing dental education activity constitutes acceptance of these terms.

Payment by Check: To hold your space in any one of the continuing dental education programs, please provide credit card information when preregistering. If payment by check is desired, the credit card will not be charged, but will be “on hold” until the check is received by the Office of Continuing Dental Education.

Payment by Credit Card: MasterCard, VISA, or Discover only. American Express payments are accepted when registering online.

On-Site Check-In: Please check details of each course for designated time and location of course check-in. Participants can pick up packets 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the course. Same-day walk-in enrollments will be accommodated on space-available basis.

Early-Bird Registration: To qualify for the “early-bird” registration fee, payment must be received prior to the early-bird registration deadline.

Continuing Dental Education Online Registration InstructionsOur office has a new registration system. Please visit the link below to create an account and register for a course. Participants will be able to access their credit letters online the Monday following the course attended:

Credit: The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston Office of Continuing Dental Education is designated as a recognized provider by the Commision for Continuing Education Recognition Program (CCERP) conducted under the auspices of the American Dental Association. The formal continuing dental education courses are accepted for fellowship/ mastership and membership maintenance credit by the Academy of General Dentistry.

Individuals should consult with their state board regarding recognition of courses acceptable for re-licensure.

ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.
