Foundation Studies N/AThis introductory program includes general Literacy, IT and Community Services topics. You will have the opportunity to reconnect to learning and prepare yourself for mainstream study.

STAGE 1

Community Studies 10 or 20 This course enables students to build on their own skills in a variety of community based projects.

Reality Bites for Creative Industries (PLP)

10Building on skills learned at all stages of AGFA and AGDAP, students participate in ‘game jam’ events that will test your ability to create a game with a small group of people in a short time frame. You will set your own education and career aspiration goal.

Life Hacks (PLP) 10This course takes you on a personal journey of discovery, helping you to set your own educational and career aspiration goals.

North of the Silk Road (Integrated Learning)

10This course develops cottage industry skills through practical application including hand painted silk scarves and sarongs, candle making, soaps and lip balms and textiles which culminates in a NASC market day where you can sell your goods and produce.

Research Practices 10Through this subject you will develop a strong foundation for success in your other SACE studies including the Stage 2 Research Project

STAGE 2

Community Studies 10 or 20This course enables students to build on their own skills in a variety of community based projects. (does not count towards ATAR)

Research Project 10The Research Project is a compulsory SACE subject, which gives you an opportunity to investigate any topic of interest. You will learn important research skills that will be helpful for other studies.

In this group of subjects you will undertake a school-developed program around a chosen learning interest that cannot be studied within the one SACE Board-accredited subject or recognised course.  The learning interest you choose to explore can be a practical or theoretical challenge, topic, or issue that extends throughout the program.

Essential Mathematics (one Semester)

10Become more confident and relaxed about relevant, everyday maths. No previous mathematics experience is required. Successful completion will satisfy the numeracy requirements of the SACE.

General Mathematics 10This course will teach you how to apply mathematical skills and processes to real life problems in a variety of contexts. It provides the foundation for Stage 2 General Mathematics and is a useful course if you’re wanting to learn a trade at TAFE or nursing at university.

Mathematics 40Understand fundamental mathematical functions needed for tertiary studies in Maths/Science specific areas. This will open the door to Mathematics Specialist and Methods courses at Stage 2 of the SACE.

STAGE 2

Essential Maths 20This course will prepare you for the workforce, TAFE or non-Maths based courses at university. You will learn how to approach new challenges by investigating, modelling, reasoning, visualising, and problem solving.

Mathematical Methods

20Learn to explore, describe and explain aspects of the world around you in a mathematical way. You will learn fundamental concepts, demonstrate mathematical skills and apply routine mathematical procedures, while making informed and critical use of electronic technology.

Specialist Mathematics

20This subject provides pathways into mathematical science, engineering, computer science, physical sciences, surveying, economics and commerce.

Mathematics Mathematics is offered at different levels. For those just starting out we have numeracy for work & community life which will satisfy the compulsory numeracy component of SACE.

Bubs N’ Me N/AThis program is co-facilitated by a senior registered midwife and is designed to meet the needs of young first time mums, under 21, currently pregnant or with children up to 6 months old.

Young Mums Program

20 A package of subjects which run over 2 full days to ease young mums into SACE achievement.

STAGE 1

Actors Studio 10Explore your creative skills as a theatre maker. Engage in improvisation, scene work, script analysis, writing for performance, acting for camera, and devising performance. Be challenged and develop your confidence and abilities to perform both on and off stage.

Animal Art (Creative Art)

10Do you want to learn practical life drawing skills in the classroom before adventuring to the Adelaide Zoo in search of animals to draw.

2D Visual Art 10This course provides opportunities to experiment with different types of art, and to learn about the various elements, including colour and composition.

Arts in the Community 10Learn about different art concepts each week, including various techniques and colours. You will have an opportunity to apply what you’ve learnt by producing artwork for an exhibition space.

Digital Art 10Develop specialized skills using digital technology and learn about a range of digital art forms, techniques and artists using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to refine your skills in creating your major digital art pieces

Certificate II Music 40This course offers the opportunity to further develop the skills and knowledge required to work in the music industry, with a focus on performing with a band using drums, bass, vocals, guitar or keyboard.

Film Studio 10

Playing a part in a film making process is fun and rewarding. In this program you will gain skills in how movies are made from pre-production, production and post-production. The program covers filming techniques, storyboard, scripting and editing to professional standards. Tell your story to the world, use your imagination and release your inner talent with moving pictures.

Gigfest (Integrated Learning)

10 Now you know how to play an instrument or sing, it’s time to put on a gig! Spend class time making music, jamming, creating bands, and learning how to put on your own event in the local community.

Music Experience 10Learn to sing or play a musical instrument such as guitar, keyboard, bass or drums. This course will help you improve literacy and numeracy skills through music-related activity. You will put on a gig and experience music in a very active way

Music Technology 10Design and Tech communication products. Students will develop skills in composing music with loops, samples and midi using industry standard software.

2D Animation and Projection

10Are you interested in learning how to project your own animations onto buildings and other large scale structures. Also you will learn how to mix videos on the fly using industry standard VJ’ing software.

Rainbow Vox 10Your Rainbow Vox singing journey allows you to join a singing family, experience team work, learning a variety of songs to perform.

Visual Arts (Self Expression)

10Explore your interests in making art. This course provides opportunities to experiment with different types of art, and to learn about the various elements, including colour and composition. This class focusses on self portraits.

Art Safari 20Do you want to learn life drawing skills and then take these skills out on safari? An opportunity to attend a number of locations around Adelaide, including the Adelaide Zoo and Botanic Gardens and connect with real world experiences.

Certificate III Music 60This course covers creative song writing, recording and performing, and focuses on developing and performing skills on stagecraft. You will also explore genres, musical analysis, copyright and music technology. You must have skills and commitment. Some performances are compulsory.

Digital Art (Creative Arts)

20Digital Art is a Creative Arts course where you will develop specialised skills using digital technology. You will have the opportunity to learn about a range of digital art forms, techniques and artists and use software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to refine your skills in creating your major digital art pieces.

Drama (Creative Arts) 20Drama focusses on community and relationship building through the study of texts and cross-cultural perspectives and encourages you to view yourself as global citizens through performance and interaction and building connections with community members.

Animals in the Community (Integrated Learning)

Learn about animals and in particular how we as a community can help them (by being involved in a couple of fundraisers throughout the year). This class covers the topics of endangered animals, careers in the animal industry, environmental enrichment and has some practical components, such as making pet toys and at time interacting with various animals.

Certificate II Community Services (Childcare)

40This VET course is for students who are considering a career in Community Services, particularly in working with children.

Community Studies (Child Studies)

10 This course is suitable for students who have a genuine interest in learning more about children.

Food and Hospitality 10Develop your skills and learn about safe work practices in food preparation. This practical course covers an introduction into the various elements involved in working in a kitchen, catering and the hospitality industry.

Health 10This course looks at ways of defining heath, healthy minds and bodies focusing on learning to read and interpret food labels, comparing the value of processed versus fresh meals, dietary guidelines and nutrition and marketing influences our choices.

Ice Factor (Community Based Learning)

10This course is a practical subject that involves participating in Ice Hockey. This subject is SACE accredited and requires students to complete a journal during the course and participate in a post program interview.

Outdoor Education (Bushwalking)

10This course will introduce you to bushwalking and lightweight camping. You will develop skills and confidence to participate in a challenging final expedition.

Outdoor Education (Kayaking)

10This course will introduce you to kayaking and lightweight camping. You will develop skills and confidence to participate in a challenging water expedition.

Physical Education 10In this course you will participate in three different sports and develop your skills. You will learn basic fitness concepts and learn about the body.

Certificate II Sport and Recreation (Outdoor Recreation)

50This course uses a wide range of outdoor experiences to develop your understanding of the natural environment. You will gain the knowledge, skills, confidence and attitudes necessary for safe participation for outdoor leisure activities.

Certificate II Kitchen Operations

40This is a hands on course where students undertake training in kitchen operations and participate in preparing and servicing meals. It will assist students interested in working as a kitchen hand, pastry cook, barista, caterer or chef.

20This course uses a wide range of outdoor experiences to develop your understanding of the natural environment. You will gain the knowledge, skills, confidence and attitudes necessary for safe participation for outdoor leisure activities.

Food and Hospitality 20Further develop your skills and understanding of safe work practices in food preparation and handling food. This practical course will teach you about the various elements involved in working in a kitchen, catering and the hospitality industry.

Sports Studies (Integrated Learning)

10 or 20This course allows you to participate in practical activities such as basketball and badminton focusing on the application and development of skills and knowledge. Work with an industry professional to design and implement an individual program on weights or nutrition

Students learn about the food and hospitality industry, food nutrition, food preparation techniques and participate in an extensive range of practical work. In PE, students gain an understanding of human functioning and physical activity, and an awareness of the community structures and practices that influence participation in physical activity. Students explore their own physical capacities and analyse performance, health and lifestyle issues. Community Studies courses enable students to build on their skills and knowledge to gain SACE accreditation for a wide variety of community based learning projects.

Certificate III Information, Digital Media and Technology

80This course builds your skills and knowledge to support information technology activities in your workplace, across a wide range of ICT areas. You will become competent using a wide range of general ICT technical functions, and self-sufficient as an advanced ICT user.

Information Processing and Publishing

10 or 20Learn how to publish material electronically and how to create a website using Adobe Dreamweaver. You will develop practical skills and understand how to resolve fundamental issues.

Biology 20

Are you the next David Attenborough? Do you want to make new discoveries in cancer research? Do you want to learn more about how human bodies work? Then studying this Biology course is the great place to start. Explore the hierarchy of life from the smallest molecules that make up DNA, through cells and organisms, to the largest ecosystems.

Certificate lll Animal Studies

35 Students must have completed Certificate ll in Animal Studies first.

Chemistry 20You will study the matter that makes up materials, and the properties, uses, means of production, and reactions of these materials. You will undertake a critical study of the social and environmental impact of materials and chemical processes.

Earth and Environmental Science

20Build on your knowledge and explore the earth, water and depths below the earth’s surface. You will visit our fossil laboratory and investigate the wonderful world of minerals and crystals.

Physics 20

This subject requires the interpretation of physical phenomena through a study of motion in two dimensions, electricity and magnetism, light and matter, and atoms and nuclei. You will learn to apply knowledge to solve problems, develop experimental and investigation design skills, and communicate through practical and other learning activities.

Psychology 20Further explore the intricacies of the human mind! Build on the psychological theory learnt in Stage 1 Psychology, to extend your knowledge of human behaviour.

Scientific Studies 10 or 20This popular subject focuses on science in general and explores how it affects our everyday lives. There is a focus on current issues in science including DNA technology and sustainability.

Enhance your skills in a variety of science-based subjects, including biology, chemistry, physics and geology through to psychology, horticulture, animal studies and conservation. Students will gain an understanding of issues facing the environment and humanity, and learn scientific principles from the basics through to more complex concepts.

10 or 20This course is designed to assist in developing your literacy skills for the future by examining issues in the community and developing texts for media.

Essential English 20Why do we respond the way we do to the world we live in? How does language affect how we see ourselves and our role in the contemporary world? Discover these answers through your study of Essential English.

EALD Essential English

20Why do we use English differently in different situations? How do we know what to say and when to say it? Enhance your English language skills by responding to and creating texts for a range of personal, social, cultural, community, and/or workplace contexts.

EnglishEnglish provides the opportunity to read, analyse and discuss a variety of texts (prose, poetry, biographies, lyrics) and visual materials (web pages, posters, games, movies). Writing, thinking, discussing, analysing and creating individual new works are exciting parts of the course. In various ways, English shows us how to create, edit and improve work, and write and speak in different styles for a number of purposes and audiences. Two satisfactorily completed units of any English subject at Stage 1 or 2 will satisfy the compulsory SACE literacy component.

These are 2 day-per-week courses which explore a broad range of graphic designing skills, from brainstorming ideas right through to publishing your work. Students will develop skills and knowledge about design, commercial photography and publishing industries.

By creating projects across all disciplines, students will build a folio of work that will allow them to develop a pathway into further study or work. Students have the opportunity to gain SACE credits across a variety of disciplines while developing knowledge and skills, and build a folio of work that will allow them to develop a pathway into further study or work.

The Learning Support package is available to students requiring more assistance to complete their compulsory aspects of SACE. The program has limited numbers and runs across 2 years. Students work closely with specialist teachers in order to develop literacy, numeracy and transferable skills for further study within NASC.

FIRST YEAR

Essential EnglishDevelop your literacy skills for everyday use in a supported learning environment. Essential English combines the rigour of English analysis with everyday texts to create sound workplace literacy skills.

Stage 1 ArtExplore your own creativity by choosing to work in a traditional art media or design in a supported learning environment. You will have the opportunity to study any topic you like whilst developing research skills and exploring yourself as an artist.

Integrated LearningWork together as a team to create a community project. This subject allows you to develop your creative thinking, team skills and build on employability skills for the future.

SECOND YEAR

Stage 2 Workplace PracticesNot sure what career pathway would suit you? This subject helps you explore current issues and your rights at work whilst developing skills that will prepare you for the workplace. Create a clear career pathway for yourself and learn about the evolving workforce.

Stage 2 Research Project AThis subject is a compulsory SACE subject, which gives you the opportunity to investigate any topic of interest. You will learn important research skills that will be helpful for other studies.

Stage 1 Essential MathsDevelop your numeracy skills for everyday use in a supported learning environment. Explore the use and development of Maths in everyday context.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are supported by a team of staff who focus on wellbeing and academic success with access to a range of services within the school and local community such as one on one for group tutorial, personal and financial counselling and support.

The following subjects may be selected as part of of a package or individually.

Stage 2 Aboriginal StudiesDevelop a deeper understanding of how land, language and people are central to the history and culture and the impact of contemporary issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people.

Stage 2 Research ProjectDevelop your research and analytical skills in a supported environment. This is a compulsory SACE subject, which gives you the opportunity to investigate any topic of interest.

Stage 1 Life Hacks (PLP)In this course you will explore your strengths and see how they can lead to a possible career pathway. Learn how to prepare for employment, including applying for jobs.

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE OR DIALECT (EALD) FOUR DAY PACKAGEThis package is available to students who come from a non-English speaking background and require more support to complete their SACE. The program allows students to work closely with their subject teachers, access specialised tutorial sessions and develop transferable skills in literacy, numeracy and research. The program incorporates the following subjects:

English as an Additional LanguageDevelop your English skills in a safe and supported learning environment. This course allows you to practice verbal and written language, builds your comprehension and analysis skills and enables you to access suitable texts for your learning needs.

Essential MathsDevelop your numeracy skills for everyday use in a supported learning environment. Explore different mathematical concepts that you can apply to your life.

Culture through Art (Community Studies)An opportunity to build on a broad range of skills, including English language skills and cultural education through exploring different Cultures and Art

Research PracticesBuild on your research and creative thinking skills and learn how to brainstorm, plan and undertake research. You will be able to locate and analyse sources and prepare yourself for the Stage 2 Research Project.

The Young Mums package is available to Young Mums who are ready to begin their SACE journey. This full year program incorporates English, Maths and Playgroup, in order to help students achieve their compulsory SACE units and prepare them for further studies within NASC.

The program incorporates the following subjects:

Essential EnglishStudents develop their literacy skills through texts that assist with the early literacy of their children. Students explore texts such as advertising and picture books and how they connect to their everyday lives.

TutorialStudents have an opportunity to work independently on tasks and gain one on one assistance. This session also includes various supportive programs such as financial counselling.

PlaygroupYoung Mums can share time with their children and peers in a supported playgroup learning environment.

YOUNG MUMS TWO DAY PACKAGE

Food and Finance (Essential Maths)Students explore the concepts of budgeting and cooking healthy meals for their family.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studentsIndigenous students can access support from a team of specialised staff and join a program focused on developing students’ skills and abilities in a wide range of academic, work and social areas. Students can achieve their SACE in a supportive and exciting environment.

CanteenA canteen is located in the TAFE cafeteria - a comfortable, air conditioned area adjacent to The Hub, where students can relax and socialise. Choose from a broad range of fresh food (prepared daily), hot food, home-made soup (in winter) and drinks. Stamps, tissues and EFTPOS (fee charged) are also available.

The canteen is open 8:30am - 2:30pm, Monday to Friday.

Child careNorthern Adelaide Senior College provides a creche for children of families who study at the school. The creche is located on the ground floor of The Hub and provides lesson time care for children from birth through to aged 4.

Learning support Learning support is provided in a relaxed tutorial setting on the lower ground floor of The Hub, where 1:1 assistance is available from specialist teachers.

Materials and Services Charges Each semester subject has a fee of $30. Full year courses are $60. The fee covers all normal classroom activities and projects. Additional costs may be incurred for extraordinary projects or activities. There is an ‘Access to Information Technology’ charge each semester of $35 (or $70 for a full year).

For 2018, the maximum amount that a Northern Adelaide Senior College student will need to pay is $310 (including ‘Access to IT’ and Materials and Services Charges).

School CardStudents studying at Northern Adelaide Senior College may be eligible for School Card benefits.

School fee payment • Students who qualify and are approved for School Card donot have to pay subject or ‘Access to Information Technology’ charges.

• Fee paying students can negotiate payment in instalmentsand pay by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or EFT.

• Northern Adelaide Senior College has ‘Centrepay’ whichallows students to make regular deductions from their Centrelink allowance to pay for fees.

Student Organising Committee The Student Organising Committee (SOC) works to make your life as a student at Northern Adelaide Senior College (NASC) as comfortable as possible. The SOC runs social events for students, raises funds for a range of causes and advocates on behalf of students on school decision-making bodies. All NASC students are encouraged to get involved.

Student services Students are encouraged to use a range of services to support their learning including:

• Career counselling

• Personal counselling

Services can be accessed via the Student Services Centre, located on Level 1 in The Hub. Opening hours are 8:30am - 4:00pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30am - 1:00pm Friday.

Travel concessionConcession travel applies if you are a full time student (four or more subjects) at Northern Adelaide Senior College. Apply for a concession pass each year at the Student Services Centre. The cost is $4.40.
