What is the program designed to achieve? This workshop is about building more capable and confident workers and transforming organizations through people’s courageous behavior. The Courageous Leadership workshop introduces people to a specific under-standing of courage, illustrates how they can become more courageous, and demonstrates the vital role courage has in the workplace and our lives.

What is unique or different about the program’s approach? The Courageous Leadership workshop introduces the new organization development practice of courage-building. Courage is the foundation on which all else—leadership, innovation, sales, ethics—is built. This work-shop, alone or as a complement to another workshop, is an excellent way to introduce this new practice.

Courage is the first virtue of leadership success. Leaders require courage to make bold decisions even when there are dissenters, to say what needs to be said no matter the conse-quences, and to place their trust in those they manage.

The Courageous Leadership workshop introduces a new organizational development practice called courage-building, guiding participants to:

» Learn about the three different types of courage and when (and how) to use each

» Gain insight into your own “courage history” so you can use your past to strengthen your future

» Understand the impact fear has on personal and organiza-tional performance

» Learn about two distinct ways of leading, along with approaches for inspiring more courageous behavior among the people with whom you work

» Step up to challenges more readily, embrace change more fully, and speak up more assertively

» Develop an action plan for extending the value of the workshop

The Courageous Leadership program has been taught to thousands of people on four continents, with organizations such as Saks Fifth Avenue, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Army, UBS Bank, Linkage, Booz Allen Hamilton, the Center for Creative Leadership, PNC Bank, and many others.

How long is the program? The workshop is designed as either a day-long or half-day session. The material is very flexible and can be adapted to many settings, such as a series of one-hour “lunch-and-learn” workshops, one-on-one coaching sessions, etc.

What is the self-assessment designed to measure? The Courageous Leadership Profile (CLP) measures the three different types of courage highlighted in this program: TRY, TRUST, and TELL. The results of the CLP help people examine how they are courageous, areas in which they could be more courageous, how those impact their professional lives, and how those areas affect those with whom they work.
