Family Time: Blair Garner Q&A Radio is radio. Or is it? With
Blair Garner’s return to overnights, the man who defined the space
with After MidNite brings newfound perspective from his three-year
run at the helm of America’s Morning Show. Country Aircheck asked
him about designing The Blair Garner Show as it supplants Cumulus’
Kickin’ It With Kix on more than 100 stations. CA: So how’s it
going so far? BG: It feels like an amazing homecoming. Most
importantly, it’s been great for my family, which was the reason to
make the change in the first place. The fact that I just voted and
my kids got to experience that with their dad is something that
wouldn’t have happened had I still been doing the morning show.
Mornings are tough, but did that surprise you? No, but I thought I
could segment things a little bit better. The machine of doing
mornings is all-consuming, so when I was with the kids, I found I
wasn’t mentally with them. You’re always thinking, “How can I use
this on the show?” That’s good, but also doesn’t allow you to fully
drink in moments with family. People doing mornings get the most
press and promotional time, but the fact is there’s a significant
price that they pay for taking on that shift. What’s different
about the new show and what’s your schedule like now? I saw an
opportunity to be less evergreen with the daypart and to be more in
the moment and topical. I’ve built a studio at my house and it’s
amazing what that allows. Take for example the CMAs. I can go to
the show and come back and add in what has just happened, which
allows us to live in the moment with the listeners. With the home
studio and Nash campus [I have] the best of both worlds. To what
degree are you live each night? It’s a mix and depends what’s going
on. There are nights [without much] going on and I may have a
family commitment to honor, so I can do the show in advance. Given
my preference, we’d be live. We’re still finding our legs a little
bit.

Country’s Mane Event Art imitates life ... and then inspires a
book. Author (and former Country Aircheck staffer) Erin Duvall says
a certain Nashville actor’s enviable tresses were the impetus for
her new book Country Music Hair. “Connie Britton’s hair has its own
Twitter account,” she explains. After discussing the idea with her
editor, Duvall was on a mission to explore the non-musical roots of
country – the bleachable, tease-able, perm-able ones. “In all walks
of life, whether you’re a country singer or not, your hairstylist
knows more about you than anybody else,” says

UPDATE
Duvall, who spent months chatting with artists and Nashville’s
top stylists to get the inside scoop on some of country’s most
iconic styles. “It’s a very intimate relationship, because you’re
trusting them with a very important part of who you are.” As anyone
who’s ever spent time in a salon knows, chair chat quickly goes
from small talk to sharing details one might only confide in a
therapist’s office. Duvall found that the case when interviewing
hairstylist Nanette England, whose clients included the late Tammy
Wynette. England not only styled Wynette’s wigs but got a backstage
pass to the ups and downs of the star’s love life, including her
turbulent marriage to George Jones. “Brenda Lee’s publicist put me
in contact with Nanette,” says Duvall. “I called her and she said,
‘I’m cutting a friend’s hair. Come on over.’ I didn’t know what to
expect when I got there. We sat down, I think she was having a
cocktail – and she gave me an amazing interview.” Among England’s
memories: washing Wynette’s hair in a truck stop bathroom sink
(“You made the best of a bad situation.”); hanging out with Burt
Reynolds when he dated Wynette (“He was very personable and fun.”);
and witnessing June Carter Cash prevent a wardrobe malfunction for
The Johnny Cash Show guest Linda Ronstadt. Nashville hairstylist
and Trumps Salon owner Earl Cox revealed to Duvall that his former
client Barbara Mandrell, who toured with Patsy Cline as her steel
guitar player, did Cline’s hair on the road. Cox also divulged
another secret behind a ‘90s star chopping her hair. “As a child of
the ‘80s who is obsessed with ‘90s country music, one of my biggest
memories was when Faith Hill cut her hair,” she says. “It was great
being able to talk to Earl Cox and have him explain that there was
no, ‘We wanted to make a big bold statement and cut her hair off.’
It was simply, her hair was unhealthy and they decided to start
over.” Duvall says one of her favorite interviews was with ‘90s
star Travis Tritt, who, at the insistence of his label, cut his
hair at the beginning of his career – and then immediately
regretted it. “He’s
Universal Music Publishing Group Exec. VP/GM Kent Earls
discusses his most influential music:1. Charlie Daniels Band's "The
Devil Went Down To Georgia": That song and subsequently the
Volunteer Jams in the mid-1980s at Starwood Amphitheatre (outside
Nashville) began my love affair of both country and southern rock
music and my first of many concerts at Starwood.
2. Randy Travis' "Forever and Ever, Amen," co-written by Don
Schlitz and Paul Overstreet: The opening performance at this year
CMA Awards reminded me when I bought the Always & Forever
album, after I heard this crossover smash. 3. Garth Brooks: The No
Fences and Ropin' the Wind albums, along with Garth's 1994 tour
stop at MTSU's Murphy Center took country music to a new
stratosphere. I was fortunate to begin my career in the industry at
such a wonderful time. 4. U2's Rattle and Hum movie: I watched this
"rockumentary" over and over for several years in college. I can
still quote lines from it. Their music and lyrics are timeless. 5.
Sam Hunt's Montevallo: He is a genre-defining superstar and an
incredible hit songwriter. The first time I heard "Take Your Time"
it blew me out of my chair. I'm so proud to work in this market
where Country radio has really embraced Sam and his music. • A
highly regarded song or album you've never heard: The 2011
Grammy-winning Album of the Year by Arcade Fire, The Suburbs. I
never got around to listening to it and now it seems too late. •
"Important" music you just don't get: Frank Ocean. • An album you
played incessantly: License To Ill by Beastie Boys. • Obscure or
non-country song everyone should listen to right now: "Heathens" by
Twenty One Pilots. It's a first listen hit that you sing all day
long. • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: "Let It Go" by
Idina Menzel because my daughters love it. My youngest makes me
sing the first verse and chorus every night before bed. And it's
the first song I ever heard use the phrase "frozen fractals all
around."

it.” Country Music Hair covers hairstyles from the 1960s through

How is music being handled and how does the playlist differ from
the one that aired on Kickin’ It With Kix, which was very current
intensive? One of the things I love about overnights is the
opportunity to break new artists and we’ll continue with that
forward-thinking mindset. At the same time, fewer songs are being
played per hour just by virtue of the show being more personality
driven than perhaps it had been. [Cumulus Dir./Nash Programming]
John Shomby is ultimately in charge of the music and he’s also a
proponent of new and emerging artists. I’m hoping to gear up a
mechanism to engage new talent in Nashville while also staying true
to the long-held radio belief of playing the hits, which includes
some gold. Can you explain the show’s approach to artist news and
the “A-Team?” A lot of the content gatekeepers today are are
bloggers and social media [reporters/personalities], so rather than
rip and read something from a prep site, I wanted to find a new
approach to the idea of providing that content to overnight
listeners. And that’s how I came to Nash Country Daily’s Lisa
Konicki, CMChat’s Jessica Northey and Morning Hangover’s Kurt
Bardella, who we call our “A-Team.” Lisa is at every party and
event in Music City, so we say she’s in charge of the “Homeland,”
or basically the middle of the country where it all originates.
Jessica lives in Tucson and covers the West Coast. She’s taken a

covering country music by hosting Twitter interviews on Monday
nights and has created a huge following for herself in the process.
Kurt, whose daily prep sheet is blasted by email to many in Country
radio, covers the East Coast. Their on-air reports, which air every
other hour, allow us to hear firsthand what’s going on in the
format. We call them the “A-Team” because they’re the best at what
they do. How does your approach differ from the morning show or
your last overnight show? One of the lessons I learned in mornings
is that people really want to know you. When you go back and listen
to someone like Paul Harvey, that’s when radio was at its absolute
best. Now there’s no way I can compare to a Paul Harvey, but I can
sure try. So rather than do this very sterile and homogenized show
that doesn’t really give any indication of who I am, I can share my
thoughts. For example, I can talk about my desire to have this
election over and how exhausted we all are from it. I look forward
to going in tonight and sharing what my experience was when I went
to the polls today. On After MidNite, there may have been a little
reticence on the part of my employers to share that kind of stuff.
Is it fair to say you have more creative freedom compared with the
morning show?
Yes, a lot more freedom. I feel fortunate that [Cumulus
SVP/Content & Programming] Mike McVay and [President/CEO] Mary
Berner have taken a hands-off approach for the most part in taking
over Kickin’ It With Kix. This all came as they said they wanted to
turn control back over to local programmers and I’ve experienced
that with respect to what I’m doing. I can honestly tell you now
that what you hear on The Blair Garner Show is 100% by my design
and I’m very proud of that. What’s the overriding goal for the
show? When you start looking at the common threads between [the 15
million second and third shifters], you start seeing that often
they are less-than-appreciated, sometimes disenfranchised people
who may be working alone. The mission is to say thank you for what
you do, thank you for keeping our country going and thanks for
digging a little deeper to get it done. I’d like say thanks to
everyone who supported me with America’s Morning Show, including
Mary Berner, Mike McVay and John Shomby. And to those who are
unaware that I’m back with an overnight show, please contact your
local Cumulus affiliate relations person! We’re back, better than
ever and it would be an honor to be on your radio station again.
